This is an excellent audience recording, featuring a solid (though unremarkable) mix of
songs from “Human Conflict No. 5”, “Secrets of the I-Ching”, and the as-yet-unreleased
“The Wishing Chair”. The audience is quiet and very little applause or chatter intrudes
upon the music.

10,000 Maniacs’ “The Wishing Chair” L.P. will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year
(original release date – September 23, 1985). Since it seems apparent that the Maniacs
are not being given the remaster / bonus tracks / box set treatment that they so richly
deserve, I’ve decided to upload all of my 70+ live and rare 10,000 Maniacs recordings
during the coming weeks. Although many of these recordings will be re-seeds of previous
Dime torrents, a substantial number have never appeared on the Dime (and many others
haven’t been shared since the Dime’s previous incarnation as “easytree.org” circa 2005).

Enjoy!

Comment:
Van Morrison was the second-to-last performer on the main stage at this festival.
Other acts included Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, The Saw Doctors, Taj Mahal, Elvis Costello, and, curiously enough, Hootie and the Blowfish.

(Hootie was technically the “headliner” of the show, as the last performer of the evening. The promoter’s explanation was that they wanted to avoid a crush for the exit, and therefore put the *least* appealing artist on last so that fans would stream out in a leisurely fashion during their set. As one might expect, Hootie’s opening notes merely prompted a premature rush for the parking lot an hour before the scheduled conclusion.)

Van appears to hold a grudge against Chicago — this marked his first appearance here since 1984.
(In his subsequent shows here in January 2001, he cut his set on the second night to a mere 70 minutes — reportedly because he was offended by the powerful and positive reaction to opener Lonnie Brooks the previous night. To prevent Lonnie from stealing his thunder in the second show, Van forced him to begin his set as the doors opened — thus preventing the majority of the audience from even seeing any of his performance.)

That said, this is an amazing show — I think it’s got much more energy than the following night
in Roseland. I taped this about five feet from the left speaker stack, so there is minimal crowd
noise (nobody was in front of me) and terrific range. The only flaw was that in my enthusiasm
I accidentally bumped the levels about 15 minutes into the set and didn’t notice my error for another
20 minutes. This has been mostly offset by normalizing the volume on the back end, but one
may notice a couple of level variations — hopefully not enough to hinder anyone’s enjoyment.

This is one of my favorite masters, and I don’t think it’s in wide
circulation — I have only traded it once or twice. There is a much lesser-quality
source circulating in the Elvis Costello community; I don’t know what is around in the VM
trading circles. Hope you like it!

Notes from the original uploader:

This is almost certainly the best quality “Wishing Chair”-era show in circulation, although a substantial number
of songs that would have been performed that night are clearly not included. Nevertheless, it’s worth
downloading this show for the rare version of “Angels of Stone” (never released, outside of the leaked 1986 demo
tape referred to as “Lost Songs”, which I will be uploading soon) and the fantastic live cover of “Wildwood
Flower”, which later ended up as a b-side but with a much slower tempo.

The interviews with Natalie and John are also enjoyable. It’s nice to hear them both sound so happy and enthusiastic.

Many more rare Maniacs recordings will be coming soon – enjoy!

10,000 Maniacs’ “The Wishing Chair” L.P. will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year
(original release date – September 23, 1985). Since it seems apparent that the Maniacs
are not being given the remaster / bonus tracks / box set treatment that they so richly
deserve, I’ve decided to upload all of my 60+ live and rare 10,000 Maniacs recordings
during the coming weeks. Although many of these recordings will be re-seeds of previous
Dime torrents, a substantial number have never appeared on the Dime (and many others
haven’t been shared since the Dime’s previous incarnation as “easytree.org” circa 2005).

Although I will be uploading most of my collection in chronological order, from 1983
onward, I’m going to begin with a brand new 2015 transfer of the band’s 1986 appearance
on the “SPIN Radio Concert”, recorded directly from my vinyl LP using a brand new
turntable. I think this pre-FM version is probably the best possible capture of this show,
and supercedes all other circulating versions. And since this is a “Wishing Chair”-era
concert, it’s appropriate to begin the 30th anniversary celebration with this recording.

Enjoy!

Comments: This was the first time I saw the Maniacs – I loved it then and I stilI love this show! I walked into the Calabash early that evening thinking “whoa – this is a Jamaican club, with Jamaican dudes hanging out – what am I, a skinny white suburban kid, doing here?” Silly question, since my fave local band at the time, the Colorblind James
Experience, was the opening band…By time I left the Calabash that night, I was thinking “wow – what was THAT???”

This band, with their whirling dervish singer, had me groovin’ like crazy by time they got to Planned  Obsolescence…after that, there was no turning back! Eventually, I got up near the front of the crowd, close enough to see Natalie kneeling on the stage, reaching down for pieces of paper she was reading/singing from (see * above)…never saw that before at a concert!

This is a good recording (and the only one I know of from that night) – I’d rate it a B/B+ for sound, and an A+ for song selection and overall ability to get me dancin’!

Thanks go out to the excellent 10,000 Maniacs fansite http://www.smalleststep.com – I was ableto decipher many titles using their resources!

Hope all you maniacs like this one – enjoy! – Zeb
