Superb songs beautifully voiced in front of an excellent band. Did my best with track splits and titles; all completions, corrections, or other improvements gratefully received. Thanks and appreciation are owed the recordist, of whose name I am unaware, for the fine source recording. The torrent has applause in balance, many talk and some music levels raised, and hoots, etc. removed or reduced. It is a fresh transfer from my clone and therefore will differ from previous versions of this performance, if any.

Faults: The talk and applause are full of whistles, cheers, and sometimes chatter. Generally the music is clear making this very clearly a worthwhile listen.

The LP ìRunning On Emptyî was released on December 6, 1977, the album concept was to record on the fly songs, not previously released, in locations associated with touring (on stage, hotel rooms, buses, backstage). A unique concept that is widely viewed as his most accessible album and the last of a brilliant run of five releases beginning with 1972ís ìJackson Browneî (1980 began a string of less than stellar releases as Jackson tended to fall victim to the excessive over-production of the 1980ís).

Red Rocks marked the opening night of the tour and live debut of many of the songs that would ultimately end up on the ìRunning On Emptyî release four months later. The live songs on the release were taken from August 27th Columbia, MD, September 6th & 7th Holmdel, NJ and the September 17th Universal City shows. The basic structure of the set remained the same as the 1976 tour, the only drawback I can see is the shows could have been an hour longer and maintained a high level of musical output. This tour showed Jackson to be both a singer songwriter and a showman.

The raw tape came with a number of issues needing to be repaired before release. It ran slightly fast throughout and has been pitch adjusted. The frequency spectrum leaned heavily to the high end making it a bit shrill in places with a small bit of high end distortion, it’s at time a little rough around the edges. Mastering took care of a vast majority of these issues and the results, though not perfect, are quite listenable.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan – Vol. 29-30

JS starts to get a bit tired of the whole effort starting in here somewhere and I can’t say I blame him at all. And I don’t have to collect the tracks and put ’em into an attractive collection and get the ball rolling and all that. I do start to understand his reluctance when I asked him if he’d want to put them back up again (mid 2018 I think).

On the other hand department – another struggle could be the VU collection for those, like me, who don’t have them all. Are they still active here? Other candidates: Pink Floyd; Neil Young; John Mellencamp; nominations for yr choice candidate, like eg. some women, maybe?

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Import Label: Righteous ASIN: B0039L1J6Q VARIOUS ARTISTS (Artist)
The peculiar thing about this release is the title, “Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan.” These are NOT Dylan songs, but his covers of traditional songs. One wonders how they decided on the misleading description.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 29: Time is a Jet Plane

It’s been a long time, but after finally getting my hands on the Esquires’ (David Rawlings and Gillian Welch) version of “Idiot Wind,” I figured it was time for a comeback. There are three others from that same PEN tribute to Dylan, plus lots of other new names and four songs not previously in the series. Plus the Flatt and Scruggs version of “Mama You’ve Been On My Mind,” as seen on The Beverly Hillbillies (where it was dedicated to Granny).

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. An extra big big shout-out to PDiamond for sending me copies of all the earlier volumes after my hd crash; thanks as well to everyone else who offered! Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

01 Mama You’ve Been On My Mind – Flatt and Scruggs (1965, Houston, TX)
02 Drifter’s Escape – Arc Angels (Jun 24, 2009, Republic Park, Austi, TX)

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 30: Time is the Enemy

In honor of Dylan’s new tour and album, here are 18 fresh covers in every style of fashion. All profits will be donated to charity. I don’t know who The Duhks are (or even how their name is pronounced), but “Wow!”

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

Note: If anyone wants to re-up previous volumes, feel free, but please check the NAB list to make sure tracks don’t need to be removed first.

18 Blowin’ in the Wind – Peter, Paul, and Mary (Nakano Sunplaza, Tokyo, Japan, February 17, 1995) !!

Mary Allin Travers (November 9, 1936 – September 16, 2009) was an American singer-songwriter and member of the folk music group Peter, Paul and Mary, along with Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey. Peter, Paul and Mary was one of the most successful folk music groups of the 1960s. Unlike most folk musicians of the early 1960s who were a part of the burgeoning music scene in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Travers grew up there. A contralto, Travers released five solo albums in addition to her work with Peter, Paul and Mary. (picture w/ bob?) May she rest peacefully.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Vol. 28: On the Waters of Oblivion

Oblivion indeed! It’s been seven months since I did one of these, and the reason is my computer crashed and I lost almost all my Dylan cover files. Among the things I lost were the first 27 volumes of this series, which I never got around to burning to disc. If anybody who’s been enjoying these wants to send me the series on disc, please PM me–I’ll dedicate the next volume to you!

This set sounds great to me, especially Ashley Hutchings’ beautiful version of “Angelina” and the last track by Billy Bragg. It’s based on “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” and I found it tremendously moving. That said, I find the politics of this particular issue morally confusing and don’t intend to make any political statement by including the recording here. There’s loads of info on Rachel Corrie online if the song peaks your interest.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). 15 Boots of Spanish Leather – Nanci Griffith (Oct 23, 1992, Symphony Hall, Boston, MA)
16 Blowin’ in the Wind – Ted Hawkins (Jun 13, 1987, Manchester International, Manchester, England)
17 The Lonesome Death of Ruth Corrie – Billy Bragg (Mar 26, 2006, The Birchmere, Alexandria, VA)

(I put this bit in. don’t mean to pique controversy. as above) r5

The Lonesome Death of Rachel Corrie, by Billy Bragg (2006). Bragg borrows Dylan’s tune and his “tears” refrain, but re-writes the verses to commemorate a young American peace activist killed in Palestine in 2003

An Israeli bulldozer killed poor Rachel Corrie,
As she stood in its path in the township of Raffa..

But Rachel Corrie believed in non-violent resistance
Put herself in harm’s way as a shield of the people
And paid with her life in a manner most brutal

But you who philosophise disgrace and criticise all fears,
Take the rag away from your face.
Now ain’t the time for your tears.

Natalie Merchant – London, England (03/25/88)

Natalie Merchant
Donmar Warehouse
London, England
March 25, 1988
(opening for Tracy Chapman)

Source: aud > ? > CD received in trade > extracted via iTunes > FLAC

Sound quality: B / B+

Tracklist:

  1. A Campfire Song
  2. Gun Shy
  3. Everyone a Puzzle Lover
  4. Don’t Talk
  5. The Painted Desert
  6. Lilydale
  7. What’s the Matter Here?
  8. Maddox Table
  9. Verdi Cries
  10. Like the Weather
  11. After Talking To Myself (unreleased)
  12. Where the Soul Never Dies (with Tracy Chapman)

Notes:

This was Natalie’s second-ever solo performance (she also performed at this same location on the previous day), serving as the opening act for Tracy Chapman. Most songs are Natalie performing entirely alone, accompanying herself on piano, although there is cello on at least one song and possibly some limited acoustic guitar on another. Tracy Chapman performs with Natalie
on the final track.

This recording is interesting not only for the rare solo performances of older songs, such as “Everyone a Puzzle Lover”, “Lilydale”, and “Maddox Table”, but also for the unreleased song “After Talking to Myself”. There is at least one other recording of Natalie performing a partial version of that song, and it is available on the Chicago 4/14/88 recording (uploaded separately).

The Movie Journal: 2024

image host

I watched 32 movies in December. 22 of them were new to me. 15 were made before I was born.

That’s all I’ll say about December because this is mostly going to be a year in review.

I watched 471 movies in 2024. That’s an average of 39.2 per month or 9 per week. 360 of them were new to me. For the first time since 2019 the number of movies I watched in a year was less than the previous year. I watched an astonishing 529 movies in 2023. I don’t know if I’ll ever beat that record. 471 movies is a lot so you might not believe me when I say I intentionally slowed my watching down a bit last year. I made an effort to do a little more reading and watch some television shows.

My wife and I like watching TV on weekday evenings. We try to find one or two shows we can enjoy and watch together. This year we watched our way through Remington Steele and started watching Moonlighting. We also started Twin Peaks for like the third time. Maybe this time we’ll actually make it through (we like the show, but for some reason, we’ve always gotten distracted and paused it for a long time, and it is a show you really need to have fresh on your mind).

Anyway, I definitely slowed my movie-watching down just a little bit.

I kept up several monthly themes from the previous years, dropped a few, and added several new ones. I still very much like doing these movie themes. I still say it helps me focus my movie viewing and my writing. Though some themes work better than others.

I did not watch enough movies that were made in 2024 to do any type of Top 10 list but I wanted to mention a few of my favorites.

Rebel Ridge: Jeremy Saulnier’s film plays like an update of Rambo: First Blood with less over-the-top action but a terrific central performance from Aaron Pierre. Saulnier has solidified himself as one of our best genre directors and he gets top marks from me here.

Love Lies Bleeding: I love that Kristen Stewart has carved out such an idiosyncratic career after making those Twilight films. Here she plays a reclusive gym manager who falls in love with a bodybuilder and finds herself involved with some rough gangsters. It is a terrific little thriller and it takes some unexpected turns.

Thelma: June Squibb had a long career as a wonderful character actress and this was one of the last films she made before she passed and one of the few in which she got a starring role. She’s perfect as an elderly woman who gets scammed out of some money through a telephone call and decides to take matters into her own hands.

imgbox

Classic Doctor Who dominated my most-watched actors categories for most of the year and it is they who remain at the top here at the end. The only change from last month is that Barbara Stanwyck slipped into a tie for fifth place with seven films watched.

imgbox

Terence Fisher rose to the top of the directors list many months ago and he managed to stay there. He directed many of the Hammer Horror films and I watched a lot of those with my wife on Friday nights. Dario Argento bumped himself to third place mostly on the heels of me watching and reviewing a collection of his made-for-TV movies.

Overall it was a very good year in movie watching. I hope to do more movie writing in the coming year and do a better job of linking to Cinema Sentries when I review something for them. Either way here’s to another great year of movie watching.
