Royal Festival Hall Rehearsals
HRV DVD 008 Rev. A

DVD Audio rip

Lineage: Original 16mm Film > Submaster > DVDR(0) > DVDR(x) > DVD video files > DVD Audio Extractor > wav@16/48 > *flac@16/48

  • Tracked with CD Wave, encoded to flac 8 with Flac Frontend, tagged and verified

16/44.1 flacs included in separate folder, downsampled with Adobe Audition 3.0.1, pre-post filltering set to high

To achieve a better flow for the benefit of the enjoyment of the rehearsals and the discussions between I deleted a few spots of silent footage which you can admire on the original DVD if you like but would be out of place on this audio rip:

  • 15 secs of silence (screen credits) at the start
  • 1 min 10 secs silent footage from stalls between Drum Instrumental and Organ Music
  • 13 secs of silence at the end

Resulting track list:

  1. Afternoon (Biding My Time) / Discussion / “Wild Tape” (4:20)
  2. The Beginning (Green Is The Colour) / Beset By Creatures Of The Deep / Discussion (2:29)
  3. Discussion / Nightmare (Cymbaline) / Discussion (3:33)
  4. Drum Instrumental (Ummagumma) (0:37)
  5. Organ Music Take 1 – A Saucerful Of Secrets (End Part) / Organ Music (3:20)
  6. More Organ / Instrumental (5:50)
  7. Chucking Out Time (Anthony Stern getting busted) (3:08)

(All songs are fragmentary)

Total time: 23:21

Apart from this unusual and fascinating chance at hearing the Floyd rehearse at this early point of their career, the discussions (well, discussions… it’s mostly Roger making observations) between rehearsals and at the end (where Anthony Stern is asked to leave) alone are worth the price of admission in my opinion.

Original notes from HRV DVD 008 Rev. A (with thanks to RonToon and the Harvested team):

This is about 20 mins of b/w footage shot at the Royal Festival Hall by Anthony Stern (it sez so right there on the opening slate). It seems that Stern was called earlier that day by the band to shoot this amazing and unique performance. Unfortunately, he didn’t go through all the proper channels, and only got permission from the RFH to shoot the rehearsals and only in certain areas of the venue. This becomes apparent when the venue’s security “busts” him and orders him to turn over all of his equipment. This all takes place while the camera is still rolling, but with audio only! You can hear the escalating dialogue between Anthony and security/management as he pleads his case. Too bad he didn’t go through the proper channels and pay for the rights to film the actual show, as he was evidently prepared to do, but at least we have this incredible rehearsal footage to marvel at. That’s the story as Stern has pretty much confirmed.

It seems that the last bit (Rick playing the final part of ASoS of the huge house pipe organ) was outta synch, but I was able to fix that properly. Other songs include Biding My Time (with Rick briefly on trombone), Green is the Color, Cymbaline, and ASoS… all incomplete but still wonderful to watch!

This Rev.A is a substantial upgrade from the original release. The picture is much less washed out and the contrast is a lot better (the blacks ar darker) w/o any video enhancement.

This time around I can take an educated stab at the gen:

The original 16mm film was transferred at a professional studio. I’m not sure what tape stock it was transferred to, but there is a good chance that a DVD was made at the same time. I can only assume that a clone of that DVD was passed on (if it was done properly, it should be the same, but I can’t know that for sure). I then received a perfect clone of that DVD which I converted to an NTSC MPEG-2 stream (CBR 8) and a
PCM stream. My previous release came from an unknown PAL VHS source.

Enjoy!

  1. For some reason this never turns up where it should i.e. with all the 67-69 radio shows. Here is the transcription.

InterviewerBM: Now meet Roger Waters of Pink Floyd.
Roger your kind of music doesn’t usually find its way into the
charts these days do you find there is still a demand for it.

RogerWaters:Um, recording wise there’s quite a big demand for albums.

INT: Yes

RW: There isn’t a demand for singles. It’s not that kind of market.

INT:Right but you can’t live by records alone. What about the live scene?

RW:Well, so far as we’re concerned most of our live work now is out of england and the live work that we still do in england is at universities and the odd quotes ‘underground club’ that’s still happening. Most of these/those scenes have packed up now.
It was a big thing last year.

INT: How do you, listening to you just now, rehearsing one or two of the things you’re doing,
how do you begin to create these sort of very complex sounds?
Are they built up gradually or…

RW:Um Yes they are built up gradually or not as the case may be some of them are some of them aren’t. It’s very difficult to say it’s you know what works for one number doesn’t work for another.
Just improvise until we hit on something that’s nice.

INT:Yeah. Good.

RW:Then we can reconstruct…

INT: And you have got a relatively new lp on release.

RW:Yes it’s out next week.

INT:Well let’s I see you listed one or two of the numbers on it, Let There Be More Light is on it isn’t it.

RW: Yep

INT:Good here we go.

Pink Floyd – Abbey Road 3, London, June 1969

The second track of three Embryo’s on “June Laying the Embryo” is presented here.

This is just the file which is supposed to be the outtake. The file on the earlier upload has a Windows noise that I had missed. Too many late nights and this was transferred a while ago at another person’s house on another late night.

I am sorry but I do not have the technology here to fix the earlier upload and so apologize for this extra splicing.
