DVD Audio rip

Lineage: Original 16mm Film > Submaster > DVDR(0) > DVDR(x) > DVD video files > DVD Audio Extractor > wav@16/48 > *flac@16/48

  • Tracked with CD Wave, encoded to flac 8 with Flac Frontend, tagged and verified

16/44.1 flacs included in separate folder, downsampled with Adobe Audition 3.0.1, pre-post filltering set to high

To achieve a better flow for the benefit of the enjoyment of the rehearsals and the discussions between I deleted a few spots of silent footage which you can admire on the original DVD if you like but would be out of place on this audio rip:

  • 15 secs of silence (screen credits) at the start
  • 1 min 10 secs silent footage from stalls between Drum Instrumental and Organ Music
  • 13 secs of silence at the end

Resulting track list:

  1. Afternoon (Biding My Time) / Discussion / “Wild Tape” (4:20)
  2. The Beginning (Green Is The Colour) / Beset By Creatures Of The Deep / Discussion (2:29)
  3. Discussion / Nightmare (Cymbaline) / Discussion (3:33)
  4. Drum Instrumental (Ummagumma) (0:37)
  5. Organ Music Take 1 – A Saucerful Of Secrets (End Part) / Organ Music (3:20)
  6. More Organ / Instrumental (5:50)
  7. Chucking Out Time (Anthony Stern getting busted) (3:08)

(All songs are fragmentary)

Total time: 23:21

Apart from this unusual and fascinating chance at hearing the Floyd rehearse at this early point of their career, the discussions (well, discussions… it’s mostly Roger making observations) between rehearsals and at the end (where Anthony Stern is asked to leave) alone are worth the price of admission in my opinion.

Original notes from HRV DVD 008 Rev. A (with thanks to RonToon and the Harvested team):

This is about 20 mins of b/w footage shot at the Royal Festival Hall by Anthony Stern (it sez so right there on the opening slate). It seems that Stern was called earlier that day by the band to shoot this amazing and unique performance. Unfortunately, he didn’t go through all the proper channels, and only got permission from the RFH to shoot the rehearsals and only in certain areas of the venue. This becomes apparent when the venue’s security “busts” him and orders him to turn over all of his equipment. This all takes place while the camera is still rolling, but with audio only! You can hear the escalating dialogue between Anthony and security/management as he pleads his case. Too bad he didn’t go through the proper channels and pay for the rights to film the actual show, as he was evidently prepared to do, but at least we have this incredible rehearsal footage to marvel at. That’s the story as Stern has pretty much confirmed.

It seems that the last bit (Rick playing the final part of ASoS of the huge house pipe organ) was outta synch, but I was able to fix that properly. Other songs include Biding My Time (with Rick briefly on trombone), Green is the Color, Cymbaline, and ASoS… all incomplete but still wonderful to watch!

This Rev.A is a substantial upgrade from the original release. The picture is much less washed out and the contrast is a lot better (the blacks ar darker) w/o any video enhancement.

This time around I can take an educated stab at the gen:

The original 16mm film was transferred at a professional studio. I’m not sure what tape stock it was transferred to, but there is a good chance that a DVD was made at the same time. I can only assume that a clone of that DVD was passed on (if it was done properly, it should be the same, but I can’t know that for sure). I then received a perfect clone of that DVD which I converted to an NTSC MPEG-2 stream (CBR 8) and a
PCM stream. My previous release came from an unknown PAL VHS source.

Enjoy!

Notes: The second night at Royal Festival Hall. Again, cosmetic work was kept to a minimum in order to provide the actual ambience and feel of the evening. This time no annoying usherettes to get in the way, but the crowd seems to be far more feisty than the first night. One person in particular, who’s presence can be felt in the right channel found it necessary to be quite vocal. We cleaned him up as best as we could, especially his more obnoxious moments, but there’s at least one cut that can be heard due to him saturating the channel.

It was an another outstanding performance that was alot cleaner in terms of technical presence. Richard Wright appears again and is seemingly less hesitant than he was on the first night. Another highlight of the night is Sir Bob Geldolf singing Comfortably Numb with Gilmour. His representation is far more powerful than Robert Wyatt’s performances.

The Interview with David Gilmour is from the “Later with Jools Holland” – BBC 2 Radio interview conducted/broadcasted on December 10, 2001. The interview material is fantastic, and highlights include Soundboard recordings of some of the songs played during the Meltdown Festival.

Notes: What a fantastic recording! Work done to this show was minimal in order to provide the actual ambience and feel of the evening. The sound quality was already presented very well – so our work was minimal.

It was an intimate evening with a few special surprises, such as the appearances of Richard Wright and Robert Wyatt. Despite some lackluster reviews, and some minor difficulties for the band during the show – this is a gem of a night and it sounds like a great time was had by all… Even David!

The Interview with David Gilmour is from the Johnnie Walker – BBC Radio 2 interview conducted/broadcasted on October 26, 2001 in support of Echoes: The Best Of Pink Floyd.

Notes: Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour performs his first solo gig in London for over a decade. His lead guitar and vocals have created a whole world of sound – expansive, engrossing, seductive. In his solo work and 30 years with the earth-force that is Pink Floyd, Gilmour has inspired our contemporary best.

Technical Details: This source was recorded from Level 4 Terrace, Seat F17 (a few rows behind the mixing desk, and slightly stage left).

Review from the Old Grey Cat: http://www.geocities.com/%7Eoldgreycat/csny/neillondon.htm

It says something about his confidence in himself that at this February 27th, 1971 solo
concert Neil included 11 new songs among a 20-song set. Or is that 21-song set? According
to Johnny Rogan’s book The Visual Documentary, “Flying on the Ground Is Wrong” was also
performed that night but, alas, it’s not included here.

What is here, however, is pure genius. Presenting himself in the singer-songwriter mode then
in vogue, Neil shapes a delicate and incisive set for an appreciative–and quiet–audience.
Compare this set to, say, later solo Neil, and what comes across most is the slow dissolve of
innocence and the dwelling on the down and dour; but, of course, that “dissolve” is the
domain (primarily) of the young, and here it’s captured by one of the best equipped
chroniclers of such stuff in the arts today. It doesn’t matter, really, how rich or poor you
are, whether you’re a rock star or a kid just out for a good time–eventually, life catches
up to you.

Typical for a Neil show, highlights abound: “Journey Through the Past” and a drop-dead,
beautiful “Love in Mind” are two such moments. Quite a few songs that eventually surfaced on
Harvest are also presented minus that album’s MOR-ish sheen. Shorn of embellishments,
“Old Man,” “Out on the Weekend,” “Heart of Gold,” “A Man Needs a Maid,” “Harvest” and
“The Needle & the Damage Done” come across as what they, in truth, are: songs from a young
man’s soul.

The sound quality is stellar throughout, with a minimum of hiss and audience noise. Even the
most novice fan would/should enjoy it. (A)

I love this performance, early 70s solo Neil at his peak. One of his best concerts and a fabulous audience recording !
I’ve traded this show in various formats throughout the years and was NEVER satisfied with it.
Usually, the pitch was way off, I’ve seen and heard versions both too slow and too fast.
The last one I got was grabbed from another tracker, excellent pitch work but, alas, some of the
hilarious between-tune banter was cut from the original BootCD source used for that torrent.
Aditionally, the sound [in my opinion] was not quite as excellent as one would have hoped for.
So I went back to my old DAT I’ve received about 10 years ago, described by my usually well informed trading-partner
as coming from a 3rd generation cassette. I’ve had already started to work on this a couple of years ago but now I’ve
finished it in a long, exhausting session, painstakingly removing about 50 tiny spots of static, some of which are on the other
versions as well, some are unique to this transfer. I just hope I’ve found them all …
% indicates a break in recording, likely on the master.
I left most of the microphone bumps etc. untouched, just cut out one or two that were really disturbing and could be removed
without interfering with the musical content. The original DAT ran a bit too fast so I had to re-pitch it completely, with results
very similar as that recent torrent. Otherwise, I did not harm the sound of this fantastic audience recording in any way.
Naturally, there is some tape hiss but I’ve heard much worse. Here’s hoping that one of these days, we’ll get this straight from the master.
No re-mastering, eq’ing etc. was ‘performed’ and if you wish to do so, do it for your own pleasure in your hobby room…
