Notes from the original uploader:

Thelma Theater, Los Angeles, December 10, 11 & 12, 1969

Copies from the soundboard reels of these shows have circulated since the ’70s, sometimes mislabled “Kaleidoscope Theater, LA,” often with dates and sequences mixed up, usually in badly degraded sound quality. This set assembles complete copies of the 11th and the 12th in the best quality circulating. Except for the middle portion of the 11th, sound is excellent throughout; this inferior segment is listenable while leaving definite room for improvement if an upgrade shows up; we haven’t been able to find one & don’t want to delay further.

Many people gave help on the way to creating this set of CDs. Dave Greenberg did the final masters. Jack Warner was instrumental in providing the difficult composite for the 2nd disc of 12/11/69, which was first mastered by Scott Clugston. RB, KW, JN and HB also provided important assistance. Jim Powell instigated the project and writes these notes. SHN conversion by Jay Gerland.

Tracking notes:
This fileset came with an additional track, d1t13. This track was an additonal copy of Hard to Handle. The checksum signature for this track matched the earlier Cotsman source, d1t13 Hard to Handle (shnid=8997). It appears the database admins elimated the additional track from the
md5 & st5 listings. I did not include this additonal track in this copy.

The orginal text file listed two additioanl tracks on disc 3 which are not present on this fileset. It turns out the original creater broke up Good Lovin’as follows in the text file:
d3t02 – Good Lovin’ >
d3t03 – Drums >
d3t04 – Good Lovin’
In reality Good Lovin’ was contained on just one track, d3t02. I renamed the tracks properly, no music is missing.

The audience recording that supplies set 2 matches the timings of deadlists for what is speculated to be the 12-10-69 2nd set. It typically has circulated with the beginning of the 12-11 show (which has a nearly identical ambience) under the name of either the 10th or 11th. This “That’s It> Charlie” clearly does not match the SBD recording for these songs on
12-11-69. Therefore, the case is strong that 12-10-69 is an accurate date for this portion, though the placement of it may be uncertain.

Sound Forge and CDWave were used to edit a few minor blemishes and for
retracking, track boundary corrections, etc.

This show was recorded a month after the release of the second album. The recording itself is remarkable for a mono audience tape from the late sixties. All the instruments are well balanced and clear, and the audience is present but never overpowers the music.

Big O said this:
A surprising recording emerged late last week of the Keith Jarrett Trio playing Bob Dylan tunes. Apparently, back in 1968, Jarrett together with Paul Motian and Charlie Haden did a trio recording for Vortex [Vortex LP 2012] called Somewhere Before and recorded two Dylan numbers – My Back Pages and Lay Lady Lay. This long out-of-print record was issued on CD in 1990 and Amazon still lists it for sale but we haven’t tried yet.

Anyway, this live recording [the original LP was also a live recording but different time and place] is by a different trio that includes Gus Nemeth [bs] and Bob Ventrello [drms]. It took place a year later in Denmark and comes from a very good FM source. This is the fixed version with the correct speed.

What was Jarrett thinking playing Bob Dylan in Europe? Clearly the free jazz movement had failed to gather mass appeal, not that that was its intent. Even Miles Davis by ’69 was conceding that jazz was no longer “king” and concessions had to be made to rock music.

But the less than energised reading of the two Dylan tunes suggests that Jarrett was uncomfortable covering rock. It was to be a difficult time for jazz musicians. In hindsight, their golden age had passed and the ’70s offered a marriage of convenience called jazz fusion. Even worse, along came jazz lite and Kenny G.

Since that time even more concessions have been made. Classical music and jazz. A whole new constellation of jazz singers with an eye on pop singles. Jazz as conservative music. Whatever happened to the shock and awe of free jazz?

This was originally shared by ricola. In turn it was speed corrected by Perv/twat Production. Thanks to all who shared this rarity. Never officially released before.
