Through The Wire

With the release of his ground-breaking third solo album in May 1980, Peter Gabriel firmly began to establish his reputation as a highly innovative solo artist. In February of that year, before the release of the album, he embarked on a British tour, dubbed the ëTour Of China 1984í, showcasing new material and a streamlined, more direct live sound.

At The Apollo in Manchester, Gabriel and his band entered from the rear of the auditorium, arriving on stage to the menacing opening strains of ìIntruderî. Alongside Tony Levin on bass and Larry Fast on keyboards was a surprising new recruit ñ guitarist John Ellis from punk outfit THE VIBRATORS.

It was Ellisí raw, dry guitar, combined with Jerry Marottaís dominant, economical drumming, which gave Gabrielís new live sound much of its harder edge. This recording, from March 5th 1980, includes several rarely performed songs from Peter Gabrielís live repertoire at the time.

ìMilgramís 37î, given a lengthy explanatory introduction by Gabriel, wouldnít appear on an album until 1986ís classic ìSoî, where it was renamed ìWe Do What Weíre Toldî. The minimal ìLead A Normal Lifeî complements ìMother Of Violenceî while ìBully For Youî (co-written with Tom Robinson, who provided the lyrics for Gabrielís music) and the ebullient ìI Go Swimmingî both remain unreleased as studio recordings. ìGames Without Frontiersî provided Gabriel with his second solo hit single (following the early success of ìSolsbury Hillîin 1977) and it was during this song that he chose to leave the stage and venture into the audience to encourage a sing-along of the ìJeux Sans FrontiËresî chorus refrain. He had already introduced this move on his first solo tour in 1977 when he appeared unexpectedly among the crowd to sing ìWaiting For The Big Oneî. In later years, of course, he would famously surf the crowd during ìLay Your Hands On Meî. The anthemic ìBikoî, which had been performed live for the first time to such dramatic effect at the previous yearís Reading Festival, was already proving to be a stirring and effective set closer in 1980 and demonstrated Gabrielís growing interest in Third World politics and human rights issues. This memorable performance in Manchester (complete with duck calls !) was brought to a close by a rousing encore of ìOn The Airî and a solo rendition of ìHere Comes The Floodî. The end. Incidentally, the support act this night was RANDOM HOLD whose guitarist David Rhodes had already worked on the recording of ìPeter Gabriel 3î and would, after this tour, become Gabrielís longest serving guitarist. He and Tony Levin remain integral members of Peter Gabrielís touring band to this day.

THE INTRUDER It is well known by now that the new musical direction begun by ìPeter Gabriel 3î and the accompanying tour were not well received by fans and critics at the time. Yet, looking back on it now, it is evident that this radical change was all for the best as it signalled a transition from ëGabriel ñ the ex-Genesis memberí to ëGabriel ñ the solo artistí.

PRRP STAFF

Notes from the Re-Master This recording comes from the master tape, provided by Peter Nicholls. It is generally a good recording with good detail and music signal up to 12,500 Hz. Our taper provided a few suggestions regarding the remaster project, identifying the high hiss level and locations of imperfection within the recording. Hiss was indeed high and was reduced using multiple techniques. Our taper had a friend along to take pictures of the event. We thank this camera man for his work because we used some of his pictures for this projectís artwork. For the audio, however, the camera man was somewhat of a challenge. Standing right next to our taper ñ and his microphones – many of the camera clicks and camera advances came in loud and clear on the recording. Most of these were manually removed but some could only be reduced in volume because removal would have corrupted the music.

Duck calls and audience noise were both quite loud on the original recording but were reduced in volume in our remastered version here. Given the clarity of the duck calls one must wonder if it is the taper himself with the noise maker in his mouth. There was a clear asymmetry in signal strength between the two channels that needed to be fixed. A high pitched ring was also present in both the live recording and the interview suggesting that the tape machine itself was the probable cause. This was also removed. In a few spots, Peterís dialogue with the audience was enhanced so we can hear it better. Over 60 clicks pops and other brief tape artifacts required manual removal along with a few coughs from the taper or his friend. Finally, the detail and crispness of the show was enhanced to better enjoy the cymbals and other high-pitched components of the performance.

The interview section was generally good in quality but, again, also had the high pitched ring that needed remove. Asymmetry in channel balance needed adjustment and the volume of the interview needed to be matched with the performance. Finally, the bass components of the interview section were quite excessive and were reduced.

SCRAPING THE BOTTOM (NEW EDITION)

AUDIO SOURCE : PCM 44.100 (16 bit)
FORMAT : FLAC LEVEL 6

DETAILS

After “Gold Collection” & “I/O from Secret World” with this one called “Scraping the Bottom” I wanted to close the series of compilations made in order to collect songs that doesn’t appear in the original PG compilations as b-sides and on original soundtracks.
I had to delete the O.S.T. tracks that were included in the original “Scraping the Bottom ” torrent, but I’ve replaced them with other rarities and mayby the compilation it’s better now…
Interesting tracks are : “Marguerita” from the album “3” sessions with Phil Collins on drums; “Bully for You”(published as a single in March 1980 in England by Tom Robinson co-author of the track with PG) and “Seven Zero”;”Wild” and last but not least “Make Tomorrow Today” an anticipation of the announced, but never published “Son of Ovo”.
Also nice are the alternate versions of “Sky Blue” and “More that This” very different from the original ones.
I’ve included also some primitive versions of songs from “Ovo” and “Up”, completely different like “The Tower That Ate the People”.

Notes: From a “millionth generation” cassette bought in Argentina some 17 years ago by our friend Alejandro. For some reason this recording has not been heavily circulated, and is shrouded in mystery. We have no legitimate doubts as to the authenticity of this recording. It appears to be from a working set of demo tapes that were used as the actual blueprint for The Final Cut -the last album that Pink Floyd would release with Roger Waters in the lineup. In some places the difference between this and the actual release are subtle, and in other places, the differences are quite stark, changing the overall tone of some of the meanings inferred from the actual release. We won’t be listing all of the differences here, so you can enjoy your own personal exploration of this work in progress.

Free Range Pigs is releasing this volume for it’s historical significance. While the sound quality is not “disappointing”, the recording does “show it’s age” in some places. We’re not exactly sure, but it sounds as though this was recorded in a professional studio, so it is very likely that somewhere in this big world, a sonically superior copy exists.

Comments:

From Pigland East – This tape is complete and with only one minor
cut–a very brief tape flip at 44:03 into the second set, which
indicates the taper was using a 90 minute cassette. As usual, FRP strives
to bring you the best possible sound without destroying the archival value
of the source tape by attempting a heavy remastering job.

The audience claps after the 3rd verse during ‘Pigs (3DO)’ and Roger did
not squeal a number. The audience is generally very quiet and respectful,
which is a refreshing change from the standard audience recording of this
tour. Not a single firework to be heard! David performs an incredible jam
during ‘SOYCD (Pts. 6-9)’. This is truly a recording of a band playing at
its peak.

From Pigland West – I’m listening to the show again. What strikes
me the most is the amazing clarity of the recording and the polite and
obviously captivated audience. They are like a Japanese audience–quiet
when they should be and clapping/cheering where appropriate. Hard to believe
they are French (just kidding Pigland Europe!). The performance, I think,
is rather uninspired but certainly an excellent and competent one. A bit
mechanical, maybe. Does David mess up the words in one of the songs?

Other Comments: So what do YOU think, dear listener? If you get a copy of this
release, please feel free to post a short review to the PF fan group of your
choice.

Comments:
A long, strange trip for this gem. It ended up in our intrepid hero’s hands as the surprise diamond in a trade.

In his own words–

“The person who I received this show from was not able to provide me with any useful information. He actually told me it was from a radio show in 1967 with the songs Astronomy Domine and Green is the Colour among others. There was no artwork, just multi-colored stick on labels with the name Pink Floyd, the letters CWRU, and 1967 on them. When I inquired about the source he just said that he was glad I liked it. Further inquiries were given answers unrelated to the question or not answered at all… Either he was just reluctant to reveal anything or was just unaware of what it was he had.”

So for once we have no lineage information for you. However what we do have is an amazing and complete document of the Floyd in their prime giving us an utterly stunning performance. Of special note is the “jam sessions” mid-song that seems to take place during each track. FOS gets a bit of a Beatlee-sque/Abbey Road type of treatment, Set The Controls is a free for all about half way through, and is that a bow solo ala Jimmy Page during the break during One Of These Days? Careful With That Axe is full of angst and just… well, rocks! Echoes is perfect as well! Finally, we get a rare treat with Blues included for good measure.

As a result of our cleanup efforts there’s great definition of the instruments and you can hear some things that I know I’ve never heard before in these live recordings. These surprises make this one a keeper and a welcome addition to the collection.

Technical Notes:

It looks as though some NR was performed in the past as part of the upper end has been completely removed (from 165000 Hz -22050 Hz).

Comments: From a very clean clone of the master cassettes. These tapes are the source for every Bradford release that you have heard. This is a direct transfer from the first generation tapes which date from 1971.

The recording includes all tune-ups and band chatter between tracks. The boys are in a playful mood, as you can tell by their interaction with the audience, which is very quiet during the songs. There is no appreciable hiss. The taper also used 60 minute cassettes, 30 minutes to a side, which is obvious by the breaks.

  • ‘Careful With That Axe, Eugene’: The recording begins with the first few notes of the song. I
especially like Roger’s scream since it is–by my count–a full 19 seconds long!
  • ‘Fat Old Sun’: A great jam session. Vocals are not perfectly clear, but you can hear every word. There are some interesting guitar licks during the tune-ups.
  • ‘Set The Controls’: The first tape flip occurs during the intro. After the song, Roger introduces ‘Atom Heart Mother’ then says the band is going to take a break, followed by what sounds like
“then we’re going to have a drink.”
  • ‘Atom Heart Mother’: During the intro, there are several pops which sound as if they might have
been due to a loose microphone lead.
  • ‘Echoes’: The opening pings to this “new piece” just pierces your skull.
  • ‘Cymbaline’: The “footsteps” sequence goes on for quite a while. The third and final tape flip
    occurs during this sequence.
  • ‘One Of These Days’: David introduces this new song using its full title. This was the second
performance of this song, the first was at the BBC 0n 30 September.
  • ‘A Saucerful Of Secrets’: The final break in the tape occurs prior to ‘Celestial Voices’.
