Miles Davis – San Francisco, CA (03/xx/60)

Miles Davis Sextet
March 1960
San Francisco
USA

From an ACETATE SOUND CLEANED (there were a lot of clicks )

New find: live Miles sextet with Coltrane in SF in March, 1960 right before the legendary quintet Europe tour!
Miles, Coltrane, Buddy Mongomery (vbs), Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb Check it out:

Miles hired Buddy Montgomery for the sextet when Cannonball Adderley left.
The plan was to take him on the Europe tour as well, but Buddy Montgomery was apparently afraid of flying.
This would seem to be the only known recording of the sextet with Montgomery.

John Lee Hooker – Santa Rosa, CA (03/17/89)

John Lee Hooker
with guest guitarist Carlos Santana
March 17, 1989
Luther Burbank Center
Santa Rosa, California, USA

From a 1st gen. audience VHS tape. Decent quality “stage recording” audio from a 1st gen. VHS tape. As is typical for this type of audience recording the instruments sound great but the vocals are a bit in the background. Carlos is out there for most of the set but there are 3 other guitarists and he is the guest so he doesn’t solo that much. But there are a few really ripping guitar solos if you know where to find them. Since the DVD video will have AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio this lossless version is for those who might want it this way too. I’m posting this before the video because I need some help with the setlist for the DVD authoring. I did the best I could but any additions/corrections will be much appreciated and the DVD video will follow shortly.

Live And Profane

Live And Profane is a bootleg CD by Totonka records. Tonka 2, is primarily comprised of Janeís Addiction at the Pyramid in Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA from November 13, 1986. The filler in this collection may be from the November 27, 1987 show at the Arcadia Theater in Dallax, TX but we havenít been able to confirm this. The sound quality very good, and from a soundboard source.

Alternate Versions:

Original versions of this bootleg come with a booklet, three reprints from classic Janeís Addiction concerts, and a rare photo reprint of the band rehearsing. Many used copies of this bootleg sold lack this photo. Later reprints of this bootleg lack the photo and have a corrected track listing.

The booklet in this bootleg is an essay that goes as follows:

Janeís Addiction stood out as art music that metal kids could like too ñ ìneometalî as easy to bang a head to as to contemplate to on headphones ñ and the success of the non-genre genre made it possible for other West Coast bands like Faith No More, Primus and Soundgarden to cross over with out confining themselves to a genre either. Where the record industry tends to peg bands as pop, rock, metal or alternative. Janeís Addiction was all of the above.

In 1987, the band was signed by Warner Bros. Records for a sum large enough to stun the underground; in early 1988, it released a live album on local Triple X Records that included the classic ìWhoresî; in late 1988, it released its first major-label album, Nothingís Shocking, which included a song about Ted Bundy, a pile of metaphors for heroin addiction (a problem that plagued all members of the band except for drummer Perkins) and an album cover that pictured Casey as naked Siamese twins with their heads ablaze. The nude videos accompanying the album were banned by MTV. Nothingís Shocking was nominated for a Grammy but lost out to Jethro Tull. In 1990, Ritual went gold in less than a month, and the band went from playing small theaters to selling out Madison Square Garden. The band was speaking to somebody.

Tracks 1-8: 11/13/1986 ñ Pyramid, The, Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA.
Track 9 Filler: 11/27/1987 ñ Arcadia Theater, Dallas, TX (unconfirmed)

Geetarz Comments:

Derek and the Dominos played two consecutive nights at the Community Theatre in Berkeley, California, and this recording represents the first of those two nights.

Sitting in with the band that night was a 16 year old Neal Schon. In a 1995 “Off the Record” (Westwood One) interview, this was Schon’s recollection:

“You know, I had been doing a lot of playing in San Francisco … I had lived in the Bay area … I didn’t have a driver’s license … so a good friend of mine, Jackie, that ended up working for Journey later, would come and pick me up on weekends and I’d go play on Broadway … I’d play at [Mike Bloomfield’s] club, and it became this thing, there was like, this ‘buzz’ in the city, about this kid [Schon].

I was in the studio with the Santana band, and we were just jamming, you know, getting high and jamming, and staying up until the wee hours of the morning, and just trying to create some music, and Eric Clapton walked in. You know, Eric Clapton at that time, was like, and before that time, had been like a god to me, a guitar hero, and he walked in and I didn’t even say ‘hello’, I was like so scared he was in the room … and we played all night, and without even saying goodbye to or anything to him he walked out, and I was just still like …in shock.

So I went home, went to sleep at some ungodly hour, got up at 3 or 4, went back to Wally Heider’s in San Francisco where we were rehearsing, and I had a message there waiting at the front desk, and it was from Clapton, and he was playing at the [Berkeley] Community Theatre there that night, and he invited me to play with him.

So, I didn’t have a car, I didn’t have a license … I can’t remember exactly who drove me there … I forget too many things these days, too many drugs (laughs) … but, she drove me, I remember she drove me over there, and I got there about 5 or 10 minutes before he went on stage, and he said “… I’ll go out
and play about two numbers, and then I’ll call you out on stage as a really good friend of mine, and you can stay up the whole rest of the night and play the whole set with me.

I said “yeah, okay … no problem”, because I knew all his songs, all his guitar solos, from record, note-for-note … I wasn’t scared to do it, because I knew all his material, like the back of my hand, I had studied it for so many years … I went on, and just ripped the place up, and he loved it.

He [Clapton] invited me back to his hotel later that evening, and basically was asking me ‘who do you listen to?’, and I said “well, I listen to YOU” and he said bleep, ‘I don’t believe it’, he didn’t believe it and there was this little acoustic guitar in his room, and I played him note-for-note ‘Live Crossroads’
or something, and he was like “I can’t believe that, you’ve taken it where I left it”.

And that’s still [like] the ultimate compliment for me at this point in my life, coming from any guitarist, and I’ll never forget that, a highlight of my life!”

Overall, this is an exceptional performance, and a worthwhile
listen for those intrepid enough to brave a fair to poor audience
recording. Once again I invoke Geetarz’ Law, which states “The best
performances are usually captured by the worst recordings, and
vicey versa”.

Made into one track.
Izotope RX > attenuated buzz at around 16k – not too audible but clears the top end a little (from 3min 50 to end of source)
Very light noise reduction – mostly to remove the vinyl rumble and low hum occurring.
Inverted phase of right channel to make the whole thing mono.
Normalised.
Exported, into audacity where I redid track markers, and exported as flac8 – including the announcment track initially removed.
