Talking Heads – San Francisco, CA (09/16/78)

Talking Heads
Boarding House
San Francisco, California, USA.
16 Sep 1978

KSAN FM broadcast > TDK D90 (unknown generation but low to my ears) > CD-R > Audacity [Speed decrease – on side 1 – ONLY] > CD Wave > TLH > FLAC

01 Intro
02 Big Country
03 Warning Sign
04 The Book I Read
05 Stay Hungry
06 Artists Only
07 The Girls Want To Be With The Girls
08 The Good Thing
09 Love > Building On Fire
10 Electricity
11 Found A Job
12 New Feeling
13 Pulled Up
14 Psycho Killer + DJ
15 Take Me To the River
16 I’m Not In Love + DJ
17 No Compassion + DJ

This has a lovely warm, vibrant sound.

When I first heard the pre-FM version of this recording, I was initially impressed. That soon turned to
disillusionment with that recording…it was so sterile! The base recording has less of a ‘live’ feel than
some Talking Heads live recordings…actually one similarly sterile recording is the December 1977 San
Francisco FM recording.

No matter…this off-air tape version sounds a lot better to me – and perhaps to you too.

I was glad to find the tape again…I’m lucky to have it! Got it off someone back in the early 90’s. On
the one and only occasion that I decided to take my uncle’s dog for a walk with a Walkman, I played this
tape. Upon crossing a small bridge over a stream, the dog got excited – probably upon seeing another dog.
I stumbled, and while I didn’t fall in – the Walkman did. A friend asked why don’t I try to go back and
get the Walkman the next day…I said, well it won’t work anymore, will it? “The tape might…”, and my
friend reminded me the water was shallow.

And so it did work! My uncle laughed when I told him the story at a later date, and that the tell tale
distortion in the tape came around the ‘take me to the water’ bit in Take Me To The River! 🙂

It sounds remarkably good. Even the DJ announcer is a joy to listen to. The mild hiss and radio broadcast
helps give it an ambience and ‘feel’ the pre-FM version lack (again, in my opinion – you may disagree). Psycho Killer…actually despite its huge popularity never a big favourite for me…but here it has the bite the
frosty pre-FM version lacks!

No processing has been carried out, bar speed correcting side 1. Oddly that ran too fast, while side 2
did not – I did check carefully against the pre-FM version of this show to do this. There is the odd fault
or fade in the brightness (a bit like a long tape dropout), but I did not attempt to repair this, I thought
leave it to the experts in this case.

If this is for you – enjoy.

Geetarz Comments:

This recording on the Silver Horse label purports to be the “Original Live Recording From the Archives”. However, it is
the same source as that of the complete show as found among private collectors. The difference is that this release has
been remastered, or as the back cover art boldly insists, 24 BIT DIGITAL REMASTERING SONIC SOUND by SLUNKY at EASTER
STUDIO”. Which likely means it was done by some bootleggerin his basement.

In even more cover art superlatives, we have “artwork by YSproduction, Produced by ULYSSES”.

With all that aside, on to the important part – how does itsound? Well, it sounds like a lightly remastered version of
a fair (at best) audience recording, and it will be up to the individual listener to determine which is preferable,
this or the original (un-remastered) source. The remaster, as viewed on a Frequency Analysis, actually has less dynamic
range, as efforts have been made to reduce audience noise, and then hiss reduction and a corresponding increase in the
upper end so it doesn’t sound too dull.

To recap, in the end, it’s a personal choice, so best to try a track or two of each and choose your preference. Either way,
you’re a winner, as the listener who can overlook the sonic limitations of the recording will be rewarded by a fantastic
performance.

The cover art claims that the bonus tracks on disc 2 (*) were recorded at the Fillmore West, San Francicso, on February 23,
1970. According to the EC Tourography (www.ectours.de), Delaney and Bonnie and Friends played the Fillmore West in San Francisco
on February 19-22, 1970, but not on the 23rd. Can anyone clarify this? Also please note that the bonus tracks are pretty rough,
and contain some issues found on the source. I’d advise to just
consider this for the main material, and forget about the bonus
tracks, as they’re below the threshold of listenability.

Geetarz Comments:

This is, to my knowledge, the “complete” (or, as complete as
the source tape) version of this particular performance.

There is in circulation a single disc portion of this show
in collector circles, also released as “Keep On Growing”
(ECDR-701). That version is also from the same source
recording.

As with many D&D recordings, the recording is probably
subpar for the average listener; however, those that can
overlook the limitation of the source material will be
rewarded with a fantastic performance.

This is an upgrade of ATM 011-016 “Three Nights of Winter”, which
was used for the “official” release “3 Nights At Winterland”. The
sound of this compared to the 2nd Gen used for ATM 011-016 is
somewhat different. This version has more bass and it’s also
“dryer” in sound (less reverb) than the 2nd Gen version. An
earlier flawed version of this Set is also in circulation. That
Set, sometimes also known as “Winterland Raw Source” and “A Raw
Winter”, suffers from index clicks, DAT clicks and buzzes all
throughout, and was “leaked” to the general public by a mistake.
The Clean version (this) has 9 tracks on Disc 4 (11.10.68/2nd
Show), while the flawed version only has 8 (same amount of music,
just one less index mark).

The more than six hours of live music assembled here gives
Hendrix fans the first opportunity to compare The Experienceís
live performances. 2-performances per night for 3-days recorded
during the bandís temporary residence at San Franciscoís Winter-
land arena. Given that these recordings have been assembled from
a variety of different sources, the sound quality, with exception
of the last 3 tracks on Disc 3, which, as the soundboard tape had
mysteriously stopped running, have been taken from a less-than
perfect audience recording is excellent, and as usual, Jimiís
virtuoso delivery is as varied and unpredictable as ever, as are
the technical problems which were invariably the sub-text of the
majority of Hendrix concerts.

Extraordinary Archives Traded Material series of the highest
quality Hendrix recordings available in traders’ circuits. All
recordings in the ATM series are taken from the lowest generation
