Notes: From a “millionth generation” cassette bought in Argentina some 17 years ago by our friend Alejandro. For some reason this recording has not been heavily circulated, and is shrouded in mystery. We have no legitimate doubts as to the authenticity of this recording. It appears to be from a working set of demo tapes that were used as the actual blueprint for The Final Cut -the last album that Pink Floyd would release with Roger Waters in the lineup. In some places the difference between this and the actual release are subtle, and in other places, the differences are quite stark, changing the overall tone of some of the meanings inferred from the actual release. We won’t be listing all of the differences here, so you can enjoy your own personal exploration of this work in progress.

Free Range Pigs is releasing this volume for it’s historical significance. While the sound quality is not “disappointing”, the recording does “show it’s age” in some places. We’re not exactly sure, but it sounds as though this was recorded in a professional studio, so it is very likely that somewhere in this big world, a sonically superior copy exists.

Comments:

From Pigland East – This tape is complete and with only one minor
cut–a very brief tape flip at 44:03 into the second set, which
indicates the taper was using a 90 minute cassette. As usual, FRP strives
to bring you the best possible sound without destroying the archival value
of the source tape by attempting a heavy remastering job.

The audience claps after the 3rd verse during ‘Pigs (3DO)’ and Roger did
not squeal a number. The audience is generally very quiet and respectful,
which is a refreshing change from the standard audience recording of this
tour. Not a single firework to be heard! David performs an incredible jam
during ‘SOYCD (Pts. 6-9)’. This is truly a recording of a band playing at
its peak.

From Pigland West – I’m listening to the show again. What strikes
me the most is the amazing clarity of the recording and the polite and
obviously captivated audience. They are like a Japanese audience–quiet
when they should be and clapping/cheering where appropriate. Hard to believe
they are French (just kidding Pigland Europe!). The performance, I think,
is rather uninspired but certainly an excellent and competent one. A bit
mechanical, maybe. Does David mess up the words in one of the songs?

A long, strange trip for this gem. It ended up in our intrepid hero’s hands as the surprise diamond in a trade.

In his own words–

“The person who I received this show from was not able to provide me with any useful information. He actually told me it was from a radio show in 1967 with the songs Astronomy Domine and Green is the Colour among others. There was no artwork, just multi-colored stick on labels with the name Pink Floyd, the letters CWRU, and 1967 on them. When I inquired about the source he just said that he was glad I liked it. Further inquiries were given answers unrelated to the question or not answered at all… Either he was just reluctant to reveal anything or was just unaware of what it was he had.”

So for once we have no lineage information for you. However what we do have is an amazing and complete document of the Floyd in their prime giving us an utterly stunning performance. Of special note is the “jam sessions” mid-song that seems to take place during each track. FOS gets a bit of a Beatlee-sque/Abbey Road type of treatment, Set The Controls is a free for all about half way through, and is that a bow solo ala Jimmy Page during the break during One Of These Days? Careful With That Axe is full of angst and just… well, rocks! Echoes is perfect as well! Finally, we get a rare treat with Blues included for good measure.

As a result of our cleanup efforts there’s great definition of the instruments and you can hear some things that I know I’ve never heard before in these live recordings. These surprises make this one a keeper and a welcome addition to the collection.

Technical Notes:

It looks as though some NR was performed in the past as part of the upper end has been completely removed (from 165000 Hz -22050 Hz).

Comments: From a very clean clone of the master cassettes. These tapes are the source for every Bradford release that you have heard. This is a direct transfer from the first generation tapes which date from 1971.

The recording includes all tune-ups and band chatter between tracks. The boys are in a playful mood, as you can tell by their interaction with the audience, which is very quiet during the songs. There is no appreciable hiss. The taper also used 60 minute cassettes, 30 minutes to a side, which is obvious by the breaks.

‘Careful With That Axe, Eugene’: The recording begins with the first few notes of the song. I
especially like Roger’s scream since it is–by my count–a full 19 seconds long!
‘Fat Old Sun’: A great jam session. Vocals are not perfectly clear, but you can hear every word. There are some interesting guitar licks during the tune-ups.
‘Set The Controls’: The first tape flip occurs during the intro. After the song, Roger introduces ‘Atom Heart Mother’ then says the band is going to take a break, followed by what sounds like
“then we’re going to have a drink.”
‘Atom Heart Mother’: During the intro, there are several pops which sound as if they might have
been due to a loose microphone lead.
‘Echoes’: The opening pings to this “new piece” just pierces your skull.
‘Cymbaline’: The “footsteps” sequence goes on for quite a while. The third and final tape flip
occurs during this sequence.
‘One Of These Days’: David introduces this new song using its full title. This was the second
performance of this song, the first was at the BBC 0n 30 September.
‘A Saucerful Of Secrets’: The final break in the tape occurs prior to ‘Celestial Voices’.

Release Notes: An interesting set of circumstances led up to the release of this recording. To my knowledge, no other audio sources of this show have surfaced before today, however, according to some trading lists we’ve seen, there are two(!) audience-shot video tapes of this show.

Many thanks are owed to David Dyte (Get It On Productions) who made this tape available to Free Range Pigs for remastering and release. David’s story follows:

“I was visiting a friend who is more or less of an ex-Floyd fan. He still likes the music, but much prefers the Indie stuff nowadays. But in years gone by, it turns out he was quite a taper. He handed me a drawer full of assorted tapes to look through, mostly traded for, but a few of his own making. Lo and behold, here’s a tape of Pink Floyd at Madison Square Garden in 1987.”

“He said, ‘Did I do that? Wow! I forgot all about this. I’ll look for the master tape. It should be in another drawer with the rest.’ Well, he could not locate the box full of masters from his arena gig taping days, but this tape was made from the master immediately – the first and only time the master was played.”
