Apparently, there are no depths to my geek-dom. After having just made fun of those fans who spend massive amounts of time searching down just the right quality show, I have to admit, I’m one of them. There are a great many sites that have ROIO torrents. I am a member of several and I spend more than my fair share of time searching through their logs and downloading shows. There is one site, however, that has eluded me. In order to keep the sites costs down, etc., they only allow so many members at a time. The number is actually pretty high, and they do a great job of cleaning out those who are not following the rules or who have no logged in very often, but still you can’t just sign up at any time. For several years now I have been trying to sign up to no avail.
Let me repeat: For years on end I have tried to sign up to a ROIO downloading site, but have failed. Me. Fail. Repeat. Nerd-city.
In my defense it wasn’t like I was trying for hours a day, everyday. Normally I’d forget about the site, until somebody would send me a link to a torrent they had going, or I’d see the site mentioned in some other fashion. Then I would try to sign up and fail. Maybe for a couple of days after I’d try some more and fail again.
Well, yesterday I tried to sign up and gained access.
Hallelujah! Hear them angels singing?
Words cannot describe the excitement that welled up in my chest. In my mind, this is the greatest bootleg site ever. It will have all the best shows with thousands of seeds and easy, fast downloadability. Truth is likely different, but for now I’m keeping the myth. There are rules, though, and one of the big ones is to keep your share ratio up. I don’t want to get too geeky technical, but the gist is like this: when you are on a torrent you are both downloading the file, plus uploading the bits you already downloaded to share with other folks on the torrent. The idea is that you should upload 25% (at least) what you have downloaded. So, if I download a 1 gig file, then I should upload 250 megs. Keeps the file going strong, among other things.
I downloaded two shows yesterday, and somewhere along the lines my uploads crashed out. I was not above my threshold. If I was excited about getting into the site, I was petrified that my ratio was out of whack. I messed with the settings, I googled, I panicked. I didn’t know what was wrong. I just knew I’d be kicked off the site after having just gotten in. Eventually I figured things out, left it going all night, and my ratios are more than good.
Whew!
That’s a lot of yada-yada that likely no one cares about, it just amuses me to see how goofy I get over some live music.
