OldNeumanntapr Notes: (2023)
This is a show that has been under wraps since its inception. I was able to plug in without anyone at the club’s knowledge, but I was told by my contact NOT to let this recording out… until Lindley had died. So I have honored that promise these last 17 years.

I just now received permission to share this so please enjoy and love this for what it is, a bit of lightening in a bottle from a long ago time. Please don’t sell this! Share with kind, Lindley-loving fans.

Best version of Cat Food Sandwiches I’ve EVER heard! about 30 minutes! Unreal recording from a small club. The beginning and ending of the show are clipped, unfortunately. This was done one a single 124 minute professional tape.

It was with great sadness that I learned early this afternoon of Mr. Dave’s passing. I had heard that he had been in frail health for a while and that he had suffered Long Covid, but I don’t know if that is what lead to his death.

I was EXTREMELY Lucky to have seen and recorded him as many times as I did. The only show I EVER got thrown out of for taping was the David Lindley / Hani Naser show at Loco Ranchero in San Luis Obispo, CA in 1993. I was using my friend Gene’s Sony D10 DAT and the internal NiCad battery wouldn’t hold a charge so I was trying to record with the AC power cord plugged into the wall, near the plasma light. (The walls were painted black and I knew that there was an electrical outlet there for the light.)
I had the D10 with two Nakamichi CM 300s with CP1 cardioid capsules in a backpack, aimed at the left side speakers. Loco Ranchero (was) a tiny club , up on the hill overlooking highway 101, where KSBY TV channel 6 is now.

Little Jack, a dwarf soundman who I helped with sound at Blues shows, was the one to out me. He was drunk and spoke in a loud voice about me taping and Lindley’s road manager heard and demanded the tape. I refused to give it because (at the time) DAT blanks were $10 each locally and they threatened to call the cops. ‘Call ’em’, I said and walked out.

It was no net loss because I only paid for the early set and at the set break I went to the men’s room and hid in the stall, so I only tried recording the second set. 😉
I wish I had that recording. It was a great show.

I will always miss hearing his playing, and it cracked me up when he would ‘channel’ Jimmy Stewart!

I have 152 Lindley recordings and hope for more. 🙂
