Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 3: 1968-1976

As Columbia Records once advertised, “Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan.” Still, I always love to hear Dylan covers. Whenever one pops up, at a show or online, I listen attentively for something new the singer might bring to the song. For the last few years, I’ve been collecting them via bit torrent with an eye toward making a multi-volume compilation.

Volume 3 is definitely the best one so far. It was originally going to be subtitled “The ’70s”, but there were a few tracks from the ’60s that fit nicely, and nothing I wanted to include after 1976. All the recordings are soundboards or broadcasts, and while the quality varies, they mostly sound great. Two cuts, the Springsteen version of “I Want You” and Van Morrison’s “Just Like a Woman,” though officially unreleased, can hold their own with the greatest Dylan covers ever. There are also some genuine rarities–especially “Sign Language” by Eric Clapton and “Man on the Street” by Dave Van Ronk. Finally, I’ve listed the last three cuts as Bonus Tracks because they don’t really flow with everything else here. The Elton John medley is a mere curiosity, but George Harrison’s desolate renditions of “I Threw It All Away” and “Mama You Been On My Mind,” recorded in cavernous Tickenham Studios during the Beatles “Let it Be” sessions, tell you everything you need to know about the Quiet Beatle’s state of mind as the Greatest Show on Earth disintegrated.

Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Thanks, of course, to the tapers, and to the original uploaders.

FEEL FREE TO E-MAIL SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE VOLUMES. Volume 4 will be more recent soundboards and broadcasts, and is shaping up to rival this one. If anyone can provide me with an audio copy of the Rosanne Cash/Bruce Cockburn version of “Don’t Think Twice” from Austin City Limits (1992), please send me a PM.

Enjoy! JS

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Vol. 33: Progress and the Doom Machine

This one goes out in memory of David Plentus, the founder of DylanCover.com, who passed away last month. I didn’t know him, but his site is an invaluable resource and it always gave me a sense of accomplishment when one of my compilations appeared on his NSD page. I hope someone will be continuing the site as a tribute to his dedication.

A couple of notes on this volume’s selection: I know some don’t consider “Ballad of Easy Rider” and “Wagon Wheel” true Dylan songs, but they’re both damn good, and after 33 volumes I decided to take the liberty; if you’re a purist, don’t download those tracks. And I also know John Mayer is widely reviled, but I think he does a nice job with “Don’t Think Twice”; as when I included Guns ‘N Roses, I’ve come down on the side of the music and tried to ignore personalities.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and most of all the composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 34: So Long, Honey Babe

Why do we admire Suze Rotolo? I think it’s because she kept her secrets, even at the risk of letting herself be defined (publicly, at least) by a handful of songs written by an articulate but temporarily bitter ex-boyfriend. When she did finally break her silence, it was with a discretion and dignity rare in our modern celebrity culture. So this volume is dedicated to Suze (and does not contain a version of “Ballad in Plain D”).

And thanks to Cover Me for the kind words.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 31: I Left My Mind Behind

It’s been a little over a year since I did one of these, so there was lots to choose from. NOTE: Lots of people ask me for past volumes in the series. If you are able to re-upload past volumes, please do! And if you’re willing to trade past volumes, please put a note in the comments section so the needy can get in touch. Thanks, Jeff

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan – Vol. 29-30

JS starts to get a bit tired of the whole effort starting in here somewhere and I can’t say I blame him at all. And I don’t have to collect the tracks and put ’em into an attractive collection and get the ball rolling and all that. I do start to understand his reluctance when I asked him if he’d want to put them back up again (mid 2018 I think).

On the other hand department – another struggle could be the VU collection for those, like me, who don’t have them all. Are they still active here? Other candidates: Pink Floyd; Neil Young; John Mellencamp; nominations for yr choice candidate, like eg. some women, maybe?

The peculiar thing about this release is the title, “Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan.” These are NOT Dylan songs, but his covers of traditional songs. One wonders how they decided on the misleading description.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 29: Time is a Jet Plane

It’s been a long time, but after finally getting my hands on the Esquires’ (David Rawlings and Gillian Welch) version of “Idiot Wind,” I figured it was time for a comeback. There are three others from that same PEN tribute to Dylan, plus lots of other new names and four songs not previously in the series. Plus the Flatt and Scruggs version of “Mama You’ve Been On My Mind,” as seen on The Beverly Hillbillies (where it was dedicated to Granny).

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. An extra big big shout-out to PDiamond for sending me copies of all the earlier volumes after my hd crash; thanks as well to everyone else who offered! Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

Mary Allin Travers (November 9, 1936 – September 16, 2009) was an American singer-songwriter and member of the folk music group Peter, Paul and Mary, along with Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey. Peter, Paul and Mary was one of the most successful folk music groups of the 1960s. Unlike most folk musicians of the early 1960s who were a part of the burgeoning music scene in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Travers grew up there. A contralto, Travers released five solo albums in addition to her work with Peter, Paul and Mary. (picture w/ bob?) May she rest peacefully.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Vol. 28: On the Waters of Oblivion

Oblivion indeed! It’s been seven months since I did one of these, and the reason is my computer crashed and I lost almost all my Dylan cover files. Among the things I lost were the first 27 volumes of this series, which I never got around to burning to disc. If anybody who’s been enjoying these wants to send me the series on disc, please PM me–I’ll dedicate the next volume to you!

This set sounds great to me, especially Ashley Hutchings’ beautiful version of “Angelina” and the last track by Billy Bragg. It’s based on “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” and I found it tremendously moving. That said, I find the politics of this particular issue morally confusing and don’t intend to make any political statement by including the recording here. There’s loads of info on Rachel Corrie online if the song peaks your interest.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

17 The Lonesome Death of Ruth Corrie – Billy Bragg (Mar 26, 2006, The Birchmere, Alexandria, VA)

(I put this bit in. don’t mean to pique controversy. as above) r5

The Lonesome Death of Rachel Corrie, by Billy Bragg (2006). Bragg borrows Dylan’s tune and his “tears” refrain, but re-writes the verses to commemorate a young American peace activist killed in Palestine in 2003

An Israeli bulldozer killed poor Rachel Corrie,
As she stood in its path in the township of Raffa..

But Rachel Corrie believed in non-violent resistance
Put herself in harm’s way as a shield of the people
And paid with her life in a manner most brutal

But you who philosophise disgrace and criticise all fears,
Take the rag away from your face.
Now ain’t the time for your tears.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 25 – You Can Always Come Back, But You Can’t Come Back All the Way

To those of you who wanted more NSD, here you go. For those who didn’t, why are you reading this? Big thanks to Sherm, who got in touch out of the blue with “Things Have Changed,” inspiring me to compile another volume.

As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good, PM me. I suspect more volumes will follow, albeit infrequently.

Enjoy!

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 24: Oh Mama, Can This Really Be the End?

Welcome back friends. This may or may not be the last in the series–there’s plenty more in the archives, but frankly I am having trouble keeping track of what I’ve already used. (If anyone has a breakdown by song and/or artist, please let me know!) With the end perhaps upon me, I’ve included a lot of things I’ve been saving, including six songs that are new to the series.

As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. (If you’ve sent me something that hasn’t been included yet, sorry–if I do more of these later, I’ll try to get your songs in!) Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good, I’d still love to get it, so PM me. If/when I get enough great stuff, I’ll be back.

Finally, for those of you who like Leonard Cohen or the Beatles, I’m going to put together some cover compilations of their songs. If you’ve got anything that might fit, I’d love to hear from you via PM.

Enjoy!

For anyone who found NSD 22 a little slow, this one should make up for it. There are some notes on performers at the bottom. Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 22: A Thousand Miles Behind

It’s been four weeks since the last edition of NSD, but the delay has certainly not been due to any lack of good material. We’ve got 22 new tracks for Volume 22, including 15 new artists and six new songs to the NSD canon. But what truly distinguishes this installment is the intentional absence of both “All Along the Watchtower” and “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” which must be the most covered Dylan songs around. Chances are they’ll be back next time.

Many of Volume 22’s performers may not be familiar at first glance (some because their names are usually hidden behind those of their bands), but they are all featured in the All Music Guide (allmusic.com), and I encourage you to look them up there. Of particular note is the Alpha Band cover of “You Angel You”–for those of you unfamiliar with these guys, they are Rolling Thunder Revue veterans T Bone Burnett, Steven Soles and David Mansfield. Also noteworthy are Robyn Hitchcock’s backing band, the Nashville Crawdads, who include Peter Buck, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings and John Paul Jones.

As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Please keep the suggestions and files coming–if you’ve got something good, PM me.
