Happy Festivus everyone! Gather round the Festivus Pole and we’ll have the Airing of Grievances, Feats of Strength, and maybe even a Festivus Miracle. We’ve got NSD debuts by Jackson Browne, Los Lobos and The Ramones, among others. We’ve got The Roots’s epic version of “Masters of War.” And we’ve got “the only known Bob Dylan Christmas song.”

As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings (especially Ramone-master Gaston, who responded to my plea for “My Back Pages”), the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good, PM me. More volumes will follow in 2008.

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
This was a special show in an intimate venue to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of Los Lobos as a band. SLO Brew was a small club in downtown San Luis Obispo on Garden Street where I have been fortunate enough to record many shows over the years. I ran two DAT recorders at this show, one off the board and one from my Neumanns hung from the front center ceiling post. As per the band’s policy I am not allowed to release the soundboard recording, so the public gets the audience tape. I had borrowed a set of 50ft XLR cables from Bill Gaines Audio in SLO and unfortunately one of the XLR connectors didn’t seat completely into the jack on one of my microphones. By the time I realized that I was only getting one channel it was too late to fix the problem, as the mics were mounted on a little portable shelf I had made to hang high above the crowd’s head on the front center post. Fortunately Dennis Orr had a fix for that which would make the recording into a ‘faked’ stereo image. SLO Brew held a maximum of 500 people so it was a nice intimate venue to record in. Thanks to the Wolves Of East LA for their generosity in recording their band, and thanks so much to Dennis Orr for the awesome job he does at post production.

I drove all the way down to the Live Oak Music Festival, an annual event in the Santa Ynez Valley north of Santa Barbara, and I had hoped to get a board patch. I had met Louie, the Los Lobos sound man, at the Avila Beach concert the previous year and he was very gracious to tapers. I was in the process of plugging into the board and got shut down by security! They were NOT nice about it either, and threatened to call the police and have me arrested! Louie threw up his hands and shrugged his shoulders. Even though it was OK with the band and OK with him it was apparently NOT OK with the venue management. I was not happy with the venue staff and I vowed to never return to the Live Oak Music Festival if this is how they treat tapers of open-taping bands. Luckily I had brought a portable quartz-lock FM tuner as a backup because I had heard that Live Oak always broadcasted their signal on a low-power FM transmitter. (The San Luis Obispo public radio station KCBX is a sponsor of the event every year.) I didn’t bring my Neumanns because the Live Oak Festival is out in the dirt under the oak trees at Camp San Marcos campground on Hwy 154 and it is a real dust bowl. I recorded the show through the FM walkman into my Tascam DA-P1 and got a good, if mono, FM signal right off the board. The only problem was that the broadcast was interrupted twice with a ‘lost child’ report. I didn’t realize this until I got home and listened to the recording. Los Lobos played a lot of interesting Mexican tunes that I had never heard before so it was definitely a good show to have recorded. It was at night and there were a lot of bugs flying around the stage lights. One of the band members commented between songs that he’d swallowed one of them! Live Oak is a three-day show, held every year in June, and includes camping. The tickets are kind of pricey but you get to see a lot of bands play. I remember thinking that it would be nice to park on the road side and try to see if I could pick up the FM signal in my truck! I never went back to try to see if this would work but it’s a good idea.

I don’t know who did the cover artwork, but I think I pulled it off of the internet. Gee, I guess my shows do get around! 😉

The sound on this show was really good but I thought that the music wasn’t as good as the Fremont Theater show from ’92. Maybe it was because they were just an opening set. It was nice to patch my Tascam DA-P1 into the board! I remember that I asked Louie, the Los Lobos soundman, for a patch. One of the local sound crew guys looked really puzzled and asked him, ‘Is he a Friend of yours???’ ‘No’, Louie said, ‘He’s a TAPER.’ This guy looked Really confused!!! I laughed and said thanks. After the set I was getting ready to unplug my deck and the Doobie’s sound man came over and said, ‘Don’t think you’re gonna stay plugged in for the Doobies!’ ‘No’, I said and decided to give a smart assed remark. ‘I hate the Doobies. I just wanted to see Los Lobos and I’m leaving now.’ I watched the Doobies set from the audience but wasn’t that impressed. I miss Michael McDonald.

This was an old DAT Heads post of mine that I recently came across, further telling the tale.

Greetings all. Had a good time in Avila but it amazes me how some bands
are SO against live recording.

I had to smuggle my DA-P1, Eco Charge, patch cables and XLR cables into
the show which was no small feat.

Had a Heck of a time finding Louie Stetzel, the sound man for Los Lobos.
They were opening for The Doobie Brothers and the Doobie soundman seemed a
little ‘hard edged.’

As I have observed before the local sound people, promoters, etc are
Clueless about taping so it’s always best to go straight to the ones in
the know.

I asked one of the local sound guys as to the whereabouts of Louie and he
looked at me and said, ‘I don’t know but there is NO recording or
photography’. I was a Little shocked as I had not Asked for recording
permission, only to the whereabouts of Louie.

I thought about this for a minute until he said, ‘You taped Derek Trucks
in Morro Bay didn’t you?’. He was on to me. 😉 I admitted that I had.

I Finally found Louie over by the board about 5 minutes before show time.
I don’t like asking to patch in at the last moment because I feel that it
is rude and inconsiderate but after searching for Louie for 30 minutes I
had no choice.

I approached the board and asked, ‘I was told that I could get a patch
today?’

He said ‘Certainly!’ and looked to one of the local sound crew guys and
said , ‘Give him a line out Brent’. The guy looked a LITTLE shocked to say
the least! I had been hearing from Several people (mostly the Doobie
Brothers’ people that ‘THERE IS TO BE NO TAPING, PRO PHOTOGRAPHY OR
VIDEO).

Brent looked at Louie and said in a shocked voice, ‘Is he a Friend of
yours….???’

‘No’, Louie said. He’s a TAPER!’ He said it in such a tone of voice like
it was Such a stupid question that this guy should have Known better! 🙂

I was smiling now! I said thanks and asked where I could set up.
He said that I could set up my deck on the amp rack case on the soundboard
platform and I opened my pack and brought out my deck and cables. The
other guy’s eyes bugged out! Louie asked what I had and I said that I had
a DA-P1 and could take RCA’s or XLR’s. He had a spare set of XLR outputs
on the board and I gave the ends of my cables to Brent and he plugged me
in. My cables are 12 feet long and I just Barely had enough length!!

Obviously this other guy had never seen tapers before. He was amazed
that I was able to bring all this stuff in when security was supposed to
be ‘so tight’.

Louie then asked if I needed anything else. ‘You need power?’ he asked.
No that’s OK’, I said. ‘I have a Lead acid battery.’

Right then another taper came up and asked for a patch and Louie directed
him to me. ‘I already gave my output to this guy. Chain off of him’, he
said.

The other taper had a Sony D8.. He plugged into
my DA-P1’s outputs. Luckily for him I was there because he did NOT have
XLR cables.

He was following the band and had a pass enabling him to bring in
equipment. He was Also amazed that I got my gear in without a pass! 😉

We ran the whole Los Lobos set through the board. Louie really bent over
backwards for us!! I had heard him mentioned on DAT Heads as being pro
taper but it’s always nice to witness it 1st hand. 🙂

Mark, the other taper told me,’don’t unplug yet and we’ll see if the
Doobies will allow us a patch.’ I Laughed! ‘Good LUCK!’ I said and told
him how adamant they were against it.

After the encore the Doobie’s soundman came up and looked at all of our
gear and said, ‘This stuff will All disappear right gentlemen?’ in a
Really sarcastic voice.

‘You don’t even allow microphone recording?’ asked Mark.

‘If you do I’d have to throw you out personally’ the guy said. What a jerk
I thought.

As I was packing up I looked at him and said, ‘I just wanted to tell you
that I didn’t bring mics and I’m not going to bother stealth recording
your band. I was only planning on taping Los Lobos through the board
because I haven’t liked the Doobie
Brothers since Michael McDonald left. In fact, I’m leaving now.’

Mark and I talked about how live recording is basically free advertising.
I was true to my word and went along with the band’s wishes and did not
stealth them. But they really turned me off with their attitude.
How can two bands that share the stage so close together in time be So
different!!!

Sorry for the long rambles but I wanted to share this story with you all.

I remember this show Well! It was the first time that I had seen Los Lobos and I got a free ticket at the very last minute. The guy who did PR for the company that I worked for had some free tickets because we were a sponsor of the show. I asked him for one on the day of the show at work. He gave me hell for waiting for the last minute to request a ticket and said not to hold my breath. At the end of the day he came to me and tossed me a ticket on my desk and said, ‘Here you are. It’s front row but…’ But what? I asked. ‘It’s all the way on the side’, he said. ‘Right in front of the left PA stack.’ I smiled and said that wouldn’t be a problem! I rushed home after work and quickly gathered my Nakamichi CM-300s and my Sony D6 and headed to the show. I missed the opening band which was Tom Ball & Kenny Sultan because I had to go all the way home to pick up my recording equipment. Interestingly enough, that was the day that a semi truck loaded with VERY toxic jet fuel bound for Vandenberg Air Force Base broke down on the Cuesta grade so they had the 101 freeway shut down over the grade. I had to detour through Morro Bay to get home. I wasn’t sure how Los Lobos felt about live taping. This was in the days before the internet so you couldn’t just check a web page. I was pretty sure the theater wouldn’t like it so I decided to play it safe. I set up the mics in the bathroom and then went to find my seat. The Fremont is an old Art-Deco-styled movie theater dating back to WW II. It has 1000 seats and is very ornate, with lots of neon and a high marquee outside. Inside it has a Huge old-fashion lobby and tapestries on the walls. The ceiling of the theater is festooned with an inset of what looks to me like a bird’s head and beak. I’ve been seeing movies in that theater since 1977 and it’s a favorite. Previously, there have only been a few bands that have played there in the history of the theater. Bonnie Raitt played there in 1983. Los Lobos played there twice, this show and once in ’95. I liked the ’92 show better. The band Yes also played there in the mid 90s. (Currently two different concert promoters have been utilizing the Fremont for live shows.) My audience master sounds like a board tape because I was literally 4 feet from the left PA stack. I ran the Nakamichi’s in a Levi jacket that had holes cut into the bottom of the front pockets so that only the capsules would stick out. The D6 I ran in a hip pack. This was my standard set up for shows at this time. I had really long hair then that I would use to cover the end of the mics with so they couldn’t be seen. There was a Cal Poly athlete security guard sitting in a folding chair not too far from me so I couldn’t really monitor my deck. When I felt the D6 shut off in the middle of a song (much sadness) I had to get up and walk back up the aisle to an empty seat to flip the tape without being seen. Ah but the struggles that we had to endure before going DAT!!! So as a result, the end of ‘Emily’ is cut. The band was really tight and the sound was awesome. They were really enthusiastic to be playing there and they did a lot of interesting and what I found out later to be rare songs. I recorded the Los Lobos show at the Fremont in ’95 but that show was SO LOUD that I had some clipping problems with the Nyquist omni mics that I had used. I think the ’92 was a much better show, both sonically and musically.

I was hoping for a board patch for the Furthur Festival, because I had heard from other tapers that they were allowing limited board access. (The bands would only allow board patches from Hot Tuna and Los Lobos, and occasionally by Bruce Hornsby, so the other bands were audience or nothing.) Unfortunately I got there late because of traffic and missed my opportunity to plug in because they were only giving access to a certain number of tapers. So, I had no choice but to record the festival up front and hope for a copy of the board tape later. (I had already missed the opening Hot Tuna set.) As it was, I met Jeff Lester at this show, who was fortunate enough to have plugged in with his TCD-D3, and he sent me a copy later of the Hot Tuna and Los Lobos sets. I had brought two 60 meter DAT blanks with me but ran out of tape on the 1st DAT and missed the end of the Hornsby set, and I didn’t notice this until just after the set. I also missed all of Mickey Hart’s Mystery Box because I wanted to conserve my second DAT blank. I like the Ventura Fairgrounds. I taped the Dead there in ’87 and actually had tickets for the ’86 show and drove all the way down before I found out that they were cancelled because of Jerry’s coma. I was there for Jerry in ’92 and ’94. I forgot a cable at the ’92 show and wasn’t able to record with my deck and I met some other tapers there and got a copy later, but I pulled a good one in ’94.

One think I always thought was cool about the beach right next to the fairgrounds is that when the waves would wash in, they would roll the cannon-ball sized rocks around and make a really surreal noise. (It was even better sounding if you were…partaking in party favors.) 🙂
