Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Import Label: Righteous ASIN: B0039L1J6Q VARIOUS ARTISTS (Artist)
The peculiar thing about this release is the title, “Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan.” These are NOT Dylan songs, but his covers of traditional songs. I don’t wonder much how they decided on the misleading description.

I included some art in these last ones. It may/may not have any relationship to our subject. As always if you don’t want them, just set your client to opt out.

JS starts to get a bit ‘burned’ starting in here somewhere. See below. I can’t blame him at all and I don’t have to collect the tracks and put ’em into an attractive collection and get the ball rolling and all that. I can start to understand his reluctance when I asked him if he’d want to put them back up again (mid 2018 I think).

warm up that .torrent client, ’cause here we go!

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, VOl. 37: Crying Like a Fire in the Sun

How time flies. I had this one ready to go for the tenth anniversary of the Love + Theft release (September 11) when my cable modem went kaput. By the time Comcast came out and fixed it, I had missed the date and it’s been sitting on my hard drive ever since. So, at last, here it is. Also, the tracks for Vol. 38 are already ready, so that should be along soon.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and most of all the composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

Lastly, if you are interested in MP3 covers (Dylan and others), check out my blog at http://smallfiguresinavastexpanse.blogspot.com/. I’m going to try to make it a daily thing for the foreseeable future. Say hi in the comments section so I know you came by.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 38: Time To Carve Another Notch

They say downloading is killing recorded music, and I’m starting to believe them: from a peak of about 1500 downloads on a new volume of NSD, we’re now down to around 300. I guess everyone else is getting them off Pirate Bay (or Music Ruined My Life). And now with the competition from Amnesty International’s four CD Dylan cover set, I really expect to take a hit. But there is some spectacular music here, and that’s the important thing.

Happy Thanksgiving–Jeff.

Various Artists – Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol., 9 – May Your Songs Always Be Sung

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan: May Your Songs Always Be Sung (Vol. 9)

Putting together this series, the biggest challenge has been finding covers of songs other than “the hits.” Perhaps you can never have too many versions of “All Along the Watchtower,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” and “Like a Rolling Stone,” but it can be even more rewarding to hear a new interpretation of a lesser known or rarely performed song, like Maria McKee’s version of “New Pony” or Tom Russell doing “Seven Curses” (both featured on NSD Vol. 6). So this time out I’ve decided to include only songs not featured on previous volumes of this project.

The highlight for me is Lou Reed’s solo rendition of “Foot of Pride.” Lou butchered this tune at Dylan’s 30th anniversary concert; here, without a band to confuse his sketchy sense of rhythm, he conquers it. I’ve never really gotten this song–“Like the lion tears the flesh off of a man/ So can a woman who passes herself off as a male” has to be the weirdest opening couplet in Dylan’s canon–but this version makes me a believer.

Thanks to all the folks who’ve sent me suggestions and files, as well as the tapers, the original uploaders, and especially the performers and composer. Pdiamond and dsgtrane have been kind enough to create great artwork for the first eight volumes, and hopefully one or both of them or someone else will do the same for this one. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Enjoy!

01 Wiggle Wiggle – John Wesley Harding (5-25-91, The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA)
02 The Man in Me – Cracker (4-29-05,Twilight Criterium Music Fest, Athens, GA)

04 Foot of Pride – Lou Reed (6-8-93, Paradiso, Amsterdam, Holland)
05 Well Well Well – Ben Harper (8-2-05, Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN)
06 Man in the Long Black Coat – Joan Osborne (5-4-96, Lakefront Arena, New Orleans, LA)
07 I Threw it All Away – Elvis Costello (10-14-84, Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA)

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 11: Lookin’ For a New Friend

Happy new year, fellow Dylan cover fans! Volume 9 of this series featured songs that hadn’t been covered in the first eight sets. To kick off the second season of NSD, this one features artists who have not previously appeared in this series. One special note: track 5, “I Thew it All Away” performed by Paul Kelly, comes from a KCRW special called “Oh Merci!”, hosted by John Wesley Harding, on Dylan’s birthday in 1993. My friend Bob taped about 30 minutes of it, from which I’ve culled this track–but if anyone has the full show, please share it!

And while I’m making requests, here’s another, for Randall (in memory of his friend Mike): can someone send me a lossless version of Bruce Springsteen’s performance of “Forever Young” at the John Hammond tribute show? Randall gave me an MP3 version, and it’s beautifully heartfelt; I’d love to include a lossless version in a later volume of this series.

That’s it for now. Please keep the suggestions and files coming! As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Enjoy!
