Notes:

The Wall of Sound setup had a tendency to produce a slight metallic reverb in the vocals at times. This effect appears most prominent here during Black-Throated Wind, after a speaker had blown during Scarlet Begonias. The issue gets better during Row Jimmy and more thereafter. The third set vocals are pretty clean.

Big River and U.S. Blues have some soundboard mix fluctuations, typical for set openers in ’74. Given U.S. Blues was particularly bad initially, only the AUD plays up to the first chorus.

A couple clicks were removed in Half-Step and Eyes.

The first 7 seconds of Eyes strangely did not match, indicating one of the sources was subtly patched or there was an unusual cut. Only the SBD plays for this brief moment.

The sound on this and the 6/28 matrix is very similar. Jerry Moore’s tapes were ideal for these and blended well. A great pair of shows from the middle of the year, also featured on Dick’s Picks 12. Thank you to all involved!

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70’s bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several “under the radar” acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ’ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

The transfers are available as 16bit/44.1KHz flac files suitable for CD burning, and also as 24bit/96KHz flac files for those who prefer the higher resolution.

Tracking notes:
With the absence of Mama Tried > Mexicali Blues from the Munder source, this was
orginally circulated as a 2 disc set. By patching these songs in, this will no
longer fit on two discs. I elected to the rename the tracks based up set number
rather than break it into a 3 disc numbering. If you want to burn this to CD, the
appropriate place the end disc 1 is at the end of the first set and end disc 2
after Drums.

The patched in songs are not a perfect fit and you will hear the change in crowd
noise and tuning as the tracks switch between sources. Nothing jarring though.

An audience member threw a beer bottle at the stage before the show started & it hit
Yvonne Elliman in the hand. Clapton was pissed and almost folded the show.
She performed the show with a bandaged hand.

Eric speaks to the audience about the incident at about 3:50 into the intro:
“I want the guy that threw the beer bottle to know that he hurt one of my people.
So don’t throw things, please don’t throw things at us.”

The second song, “Don’t Have To Hurt Nobody” was an impromptu jam inspired by the incident.

During “Willie and the Handjive/Get Ready”, Yvonne sings “throwing your fucking bottles” at about 6:20.

This recording represents part of Dan’s earliest efforts to capture the live concert experience for posterity, hence the series name “Dan Lampinski – The Early Years Volume XX”. Given the very consistent high quality of Dan’s later work, it would have been easy to blow off these recordings and consign them to the dustbin of history, but there are quite a few captures in the series that are well worth circulating, if not for their rarity, but for the obsessive collector types (we know who we are) that want every single second of any recordings of their favourite musicians. So please, just accept these recordings for what they are, another part of the tapestry we weave when we collect and share such things.

Okay, here’s the damage I (un)did to this source. I patched in the missing space
from Doug Oade’s excellent recording. In order to match the levels with Drums at
the beginning and Wheel at the end, I had to put up with a certain amount of
clipping on the drums during the space set – just where the snares are hit really
hard. It’s worth it, though, first to make the transitions smoother, second to
illustrate how an AUD can shine. Doug Oade was obviously not using any limiter,
which Amy probably was, at least for her recording – you can instantly tell the
difference in clarity. A local soundman friend of mine once told me, “I don’t
mix for tapes, I mix for the room”. Soundboard snobs take heed!

I also eliminated a short gap at the end of The Wheel, restoring the seamless
transition into Stella Blue. The gap was possibly a TAO artifact.

The US Blues encore from the original fileset is probably also from the Oade AUD.
