OldNeumanntapr Notes:
As I write these notes, early in the morning of May 15, 2015, I’m remembering my one and only time recording the ‘King Of The Blues’, after now just reading of his passing. I’m glad I was able to record this show, at the Christopher Cohan Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly. This was a difficult show because I attempted to both record and photograph from the 5th row. (You can hear the shutter of my Nikon FM on the recording.) This was the last time I attempted to do both at the same show, as it was just too difficult. Enjoy!

[August 2024. I just finished going through this show track by track and lowering the levels of the obnoxious close-proximity hand claps in Audacity. I think it makes for a much better listening experience, especially with headphones. There are some that I might of missed, and I didn’t even try to remove the noise of the shutter clicking from my Nikon FM, (Oh the joys of recording and doing photos at the same time!), but as I used to say in college; ‘It was Late, and I was TIRED!’]

He was quite the show man. RIP B.B.!

The Historic Fremont (Movie) Theater Was Built In 1942

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was the first concert that I recorded since 2019, which by the way, was also Richard Thompson (Electric Trio) at the Fremont Theater. I’m always telling myself, ‘This is the LAST show I’m going to record’, but then my friend in SLO will contact me about another show coming up and I will relent.
I didn’t have much choice these past two years because of the pandemic. No one was seeing any live music. For this show I had planned on bring in my Beyer MV100 microphone preamp but when I got to the show and took a photo of the front of the theater from across the street I noticed that they were using a wand to go over people before they entered. Damn! It takes all the fun out of it when I have to resort to subterfuge to get my gear inside. So, I decided to leave the preamp in the car and run the Neumanns directly into the XLR jacks of the Tascam recorder. The sound inside was really good and I couldn’t really tell much of a difference in the recording after using the internal preamp compared to the Beyer. I’m still kicking myself that I missed the two opening songs, but I was under the assumption that there would be an opening act and I was late getting in. Also, I had forgotten to switch on the phantom power on the back of the Tascam (which powers the microphones) because usually I use the phantom power that the Beyer preamp supplies. So it threw me at first when I wasn’t getting any levels on the recorder when I DID start to record. I guess I’m a little rusty after not recording anything these last two years.

Thanks (as always) to Flying M for the outstanding job he does in post production by reducing loud clapping and cleaning things up to make a more enjoyable listening experience, and thanks to Ethiessen for the great cover artwork and graphic arts design! Thanks also to Dave for persuading me to go to see another great show.

When I heard from my ‘partner-in-crime’ that his friend Brian’s wife couldn’t make the show I couldn’t pay him for the ticket fast enough. I love John Hiatt and especially enjoy hearing him play solo acoustic. As usual, John tells some funny stories between songs and does a few requests. There was one guy who kept asking for ‘Feels Like Rain’. The Fremont is a beautiful theater and has wonderful acoustics and it is always a real pleasure to see a live performance there. The Fremont was built in 1942 and was one of San Luis Obispo’s two art-deco movie theaters, the other being the Obispo, which was built in 1911 and burned to the ground in late 1975. Though the Fremont still has provisions for showing films, the SLO Film Festival is held there every spring, it has since been converted to a performing arts theater. Thanks so much to Flying M for his wonderful job at post production fairy dust. 🙂

The Tipsy Gypsies Opened
The Historic Fremont (Movie) Theater Was Built In 1942

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
The show was awesome and we were 4th row on the left.
Everything went really well and I was able to set levels right on the money.
Genéte, who is a Huge BBVD fan, took photos with her iPhone and actually got some pretty good results. After the show she bought a poster and waited in line so all of the band could sign it.
She had a Great time and was really happy that she went.

I had thought that I would be directly in front of the left PA stack, but when we got into the theater I saw that they had hung the PA cabinets closer together than I would have imagined, so I was actually a little left and off axis from the left stack.
The opening band, which I didn’t record (they were a local SLO County band) sounded like there was a bump in the frequency response. Fortunately, BBVD sounded really good and there was no hint of that previous anomaly.

I only had One obnoxious clapper to my left, either behind me or further down my own row. (I made sure that Genéte was quiet, no easy feat.) 😉

We were so close to the stage that I could hear the horns onstage as well as being amplified through the PA. Fortunately we had really lucked out when we made or seating decisions, because we were on the left and so was the horn section! The piano and stand up bass were on the right, and Scotty, the lead singer was in the center.

The last time I saw these guys was when they played a free show at the Paso Robles Mid-State Fair in 2001. I had never heard of them but Genéte was really into them and I remember being impressed with their sound.

Flying M notes:
never heard this band before, wow.
A very nice sounding recording and I found the guy you wanted “erased”.
His hand was cupped creating a very loud finger snapping sound.
Verses a more petite slapping of 4 fingers on a palm which makes more of a tick (try it yourself).

Kind of addictive once you get used to hearing your tapes without loud claps.
If it only didn’t take sooooo long to do.
As normal when I went back the third time I found even more of that guy.
I wonder how many times an enthusiastic clapper “claps’ during an hour and a half concert?
Well that’s how many repairs this has, times maybe 2 (to include other neighbors).

Har-Bal uses an interesting form of equalization called harmonic balancing.
The theory is to balance the power across the frequency spectrum and you get additional clarity.
OK I am real new at this and it is not a simple procedure to get it right.
You might enjoy the added shimmer and increased volume.
The hidden music buried in the quiet spots are louder now adding more detail.
No limiting but more like riding the volume knob up and down.
So the quiet places are not as quiet.
An old studio trick.

OldNeumanntapr Notes;
My wife is a huge Big Bad Voodoo Daddy fan, and when she told me that she was buying tickets for the Holiday Extravaganza I told her that I would be sure to do my best to see that it was archived. The Christopher Cohan Center is a beautiful performing arts theater on the Cal Poly university campus and it seats around 1,300 people and has curved interior walls to reduce audio standing waves. The acoustics are perfect, and we were upfront in the sixth row, almost center. Because of the close proximity to the stage I was getting a lot of direct sound from the horns which blended perfectly with the overhead PA vocals and the piano, bass, etc.
I hadn’t seen, or recorded, BBVD since the Fremont Theater show in SLO in 2016 so I was psyched to see them again. They are such an awesome big band with all the horns, and Scotty really steers the ship as the band leader and lead vocalist. I thought it was funny when Scotty told the crowd between songs that the biggest request that they received for the Holiday Extravaganza was to ‘Please don’t play just holiday music!’ Too funny! I was relieved to hear this because in the car on the way up I told my wife that I really wanted to hear Big Bad Voodoo Daddy classics like ‘Mr. Pinstripe Suit’, and she assured me that it would be, ‘Just Holiday songs’. All I can say now is ‘Nay’!!!! 😉 I loved hearing the band ‘swing’ through the holiday classics and the fact that they played some of their own classics was icing on the cake! I also really enjoyed hearing Scotty’s humorous stories, like when he thought that he had been pickpocketed by Santa, or when his young daughter requested her favorite holiday song. ‘All I want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth’ and he agreed to do it for her.

Thanks so much to Flying M for his post production ‘Fairy Dust’ that he does with his mad scientist computer programs. This recording really shines now because of his work.

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was all I was able to salvage from this recording after my 1st Tascam DR100mkII suffered an extreme electronic meltdown. (As I was setting up in the stall, the Tascam slipped out of my pack while on my lap and partially fell into the water of the toilet, before I could grab it.) Just a corner of the recorder got wet and it might have been OK if I would have had the time to let it thoroughly dry out, but the show was about to start and I had no recourse but to try and use it. This show would have yielded such a killer recording, it’s really a shame that it didn’t work out. Placement in the theater was superb, the crowd was quiet, and the sound was awesome. My Friend Dave’s friend Rick Williams was recording in the seat next to me on the right and he captured the entire show on his Edirol R09 with the internal microphones. Though his recording is good it doesn’t match the sound of the Neumanns / V2. I asked him if I could use his Edirol in place of my Tascam but he had never used the line out and didn’t know how to go through the menus to change the input setting, especially in the dim light of the theater. I really had high hopes for this show and I was crushed to not be able to capitalize on such a great night. The Lunatec V2 is an extremely high end microphone preamp, but it’s almost impossible to use covertly as it is large and requires a separate 6 volt rechargeable battery, but has awesome sound! Just getting this rig through the doors was no easy feat. I waited through a few songs before turning it on to record and it lasted through a few songs before the display started freaking out and it just died. At least I got a couple of songs reordered to actually hear what a difference the Lunatec V2 makes as compared to my Beyer MV 100. Some shows that I have done resulted in ‘the thrill of victory’, but this night was definitely in ‘the agony of defeat’ column.

The Cal Poly Performing Arts Center is a great place to see a show. The acoustics are wonderful and the venue is not too big (1,300 capacity), so it’s very intimate. I was 7th row center for this show and the recording sounds really nice. This was my second Tull show and I thought the band was very tight. I worked the load out on this show afterwards and I never worked so hard in my life!!! It took about four of us to load a 55ft semi trailer with all of Tull’s equipment. That was the only time I ever worked at the PAC because it was back breaking work! (This was my first and last time working as a stage hand for the Performing Arts Center. I quit right after this show because I realized that all they wanted was grunt work.) I remember Tull’s road manager, in his English accent, barking out instructions like,’Flip this one end to end my pretties and stack in there on that one.’ Over and over again!! None of the crew knew that I had recorded the show and then run the gear out to my car and locked it away before joining the other ‘grunts’ and loading the truck. I still have the backstage pass, not that I was able to make use of it during the show because I was sitting like a stone in the audience!

OldNeumanntapr Notes-

The Cuesta College Auditorium was a neat old shoebox-type theater, built back during WWII on the old Cuesta campus which was part of the Camp San Luis California National Guard army base. (The New campus, built in the early 70s fronts Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway.) The auditorium looked like hell, with peeling paint and a leaky roof with a water-stained ceiling, but had really nice acoustics. Alas, it was deemed not worthy to retro-fit for earthquake standards, so it is slowing decaying and has been boarded up and condemned since the middle 2000s. It was sad, because Arlo remarked during the show how wonderful the sound was in the old theater. He said that they had played some brand new houses that didn’t sound half as good, and he implored the audience to try and preserve the old building. Sadly, that didn’t happen. I have recorded at the old auditorium a lot, and made my first recording there in the late 1980s when I was working part time for the Cuesta College Music Department while I was going to school. I gave a patch to my friend TaprRon at this Arlo show and he laughed, because it was the first time he’d gotten a patch at a stealth show! I got my ticket signed at this show, and My ex wife Nikki and I brought our daughter Lucy to see Arlo play. She was seven years old, and the last time that we saw Arlo, Nikki was pregnant with Lucy.

This was another Bela Fleck show at the old Cuesta College Auditorium, which was located on the old campus behind the creek and once a part of the National Guard army base. The theater was built back during World War II and had amazing acoustics and a lot of charm but was a real eyesore and was eventually deemed to be not worthy for earthquake retrofitting and was abandoned in the late 2000s. Again, because of the cramped spaces in the aisles, the theater would not allow microphone stands so I had to hand-hold the Neumanns on a T-Bar. After the show I got my ticket stub signed by Bela.
