Doc Watson and David Grisman, 8-02-98

Two of the most notable players of their instruments.
Doc Watson is one of the best flat picker guitar players
Who has ever lived. And David Grisman might be the most
well known mandolin player around. Put them together
and it’s a special treat. This one didn’t come with a
lot of information just title and venue and date.
Thanks to Chuck for the set list help!

NOTES from the original uploader:

I’m Not Positive, but sounds like SBD Recording

The “Come Together: Jon Bon Jovi & Friends” benefit concert was organized by the Long Branch Police Department, The Asbury Park Press, and FPI Concerts, along with Jon Bon Jovi. The concert was to honor slain Long Branch police officer Sgt. Patrick King and raise money for the Sgt. Patrick King Memorial Fund to provide for his family. King, 45-year-old father of two young boys, was fatally shot on 20 Nov 1997 by a fugitive who had vowed to kill himself and a police officer rather than be captured and returned to jail.

20 musicians with ties to the Jersey shore music scene answered Jon Bon Jovi’s call, including Bruce Springsteen, Patti Scialfa and several members of the then-disbanded E Street Band (Clarence Clemons, Danni Frederici, Patti Scialfa, Little Steven, and Max Weinberg), Southside Johnny, Bobby Bandiera, and Richie Sambora among others. Actor Danny DeVito was the event’s MC.

This was a near-reunion of the fabled E Street Band and Bruce’s first full-length electric gig following the acoustic: The Ghost Of Tom Joad Solo Acoustic Tour. Springsteen spent much of (or maybe all) the night onstage, singing or playing guitar only.

Source: The Rockpalast Christmas Special, broadcast from Dusseldorf, Germany
on December 19, 1998

Review by Niall Connors: Van’s show at the Rockpalast Christmas Show in Dusseldorf on 19-Dec-98 will likely go down as one of Van’s most famous concerts: it was broadcast live; it is an excellent show; the band was buttressed by Candy Dulfer and Fred Wesley.

The Internet quickly spread the gospel of this show’s contents, and that same Internet helped to spread quite quickly excellent videotape and audiotapes (as well as CDRs) of the performance. So, was there a need for me to splurge for The Polar Bear boot of the show, which Polar Bear claims to be a “soundboard” recording? No. Did I? Absolutely. As even my wife contents, my Van hobby may be expensive, but is quite benign in the face of other “hobbies” that are out there.

While I am not an audiophile, to my ear this is a soundboard recording, and it is a notch above the excellent FM recordings that are available through the Van-List and Van-Trades folks. Katie Kissoon’s background vocals are extremely clear and the instrument’s contribution is felt both individually and collectively. A
superb recording of a great show. A+

Bruce Hornsby has a habit of playing snippets of random songs inside of another song. Often, in fact, he’ll play two or three pieces of songs inside another full song. For example in this show he plays “Ramblers Hornpipe,” “Mellow Yellow,” and “First There is a Mountain” within the frame work of “King of the Hill.”

Normally creators of bootlegs will simply track those snippets in the same track as the full-on song. In this case, for unknown reasons the creator decided to create separate tracks for each snippet. Kind of obnoxious, if you ask me, but that’s the way it is. Great, great show though. Tons of fun.

Are you tired of Bruce Hornsby yet? I have organized the majority of my bootlegs into those CD books but they are in no discernible order. Knowing that I’d continually be getting new boots by the same artists it seemed ridiculous to also have to continually move disks about to make room. Organizing within the books to have artists in alphabetical order or some such thing would be a terrible nightmare. Instead I label each disk with a number and then add that number to the master boot list. Thus I can look at my list and determine where a particular boot is.

That’s the theory at least.

Anyways, for reasons I am no longer sure of a whole bunch of my Bruce Hornsby shows did wind up in the same are of a book. We are in the middle of that now. I bring my apologies if you are not a fan and are getting tired of seeing his name (although this is but a small sampling of what will happen when I get to my Grateful Dead section.)
