OldNeumanntapr Notes;
This was the second time that I saw and recorded String Cheese Incident. By this time they were no longer allowing soundboard patches but welcomed audience recording. However, they wanted everyone to patch through a set of AKG 414 microphones which were set up on a stand in the middle of the room, center. (I don’t remember if the AKGs belonged to the band or another taper.) Because the room was small and space was limited the venue was only allowing one microphone stand to be set up. I didn’t want to patch and pleaded with them to allow me to run my own mics. They asked me what did of mics I had and I said that I had Neumann KM 184s (my 1st set of Neumanns before I sold them to get the KM 140s with detachable capsules), and I remember that one of the tapers / crew, said “Those are good mics. Let him run them.” They allowed me to hang the KM 184s under the AKGs by reversing my Atlas microphone bar. Sadly, no one else elected to plug into my mics / deck so I have the only KM 184 master from this show. This was before I had purchased my Beyer MV 100 microphone preamp from Pete Min, a taper I met through the online list-serve ‘DATHeads’ and was using the PSC phantom supplies I had borrowed from Pete which required me to use the Sony TCD D7’s internal microphone preamp. Pete owned both the PSC phantom power supplies and the Beyer preamp and I decided after using both to go with the Beyer because it was small and could run both channels in one box, whereas the PSC phantoms were in two separate boxes. The internal microphone preamp on the little DAT recorders could overload easily and brickwall, so I thought the Beyer had more precise control. The SBM 1 outboard A/D converter allowed for mastering at 16bit/44.1kHz, which the Sony TCD-D7 would not do on its own. Sony changed that with the arrival of the TCD-D8.
