The Movie Journal: November 2025

hell drivers

I watched 51 movies in November. That’s a lot of movies, even for me. It wasn’t really intentional. I’m still on a slow movie-watching kick so I can watch more TV kick, but I had a lot of reviews to do, including an Alec Guinness boxed set. Normally I watch movies on the weekend and watch TV through the week, but with reviews I have due dates, so I wound up watching a lot of those through the week while still maintaining my weekend movie schedule. 20 of the movies I watched were new to me. 29 of them were made before I was born.

It was Noirvember (which partially explains the numerous old movies; also see those reviews), and I watched 17 of those. I’ve decided that for December I’m going to try and watch a lot of movies that came out in 2025 and hopefully do a whole list of my favorites from this year. By the end of November, I got a little tired of noirs and started watching some new movies.

For my most watched actors category, Willem Dafoe jumped way up into #1 with 8 films watched. I’ve always found him to be an incredibly interesting actor, and I admire that he’s made a career out of choosing all sorts of roles, never pigeonholing himself into one type of thing. I didn’t intentionally try to watch a bunch of his films this year; it just sort of happened. I think I watched a couple early in the year, and had that kind of lightbulb go off in my head about how much I like him, and then whenever I’d see him show up in something, I’d automatically give it a shot. The rest of the actor’s field looks pretty much the same.

The most watched director’s list saw some small changes. Wes Anderson and Terence Fisher broke out of their six-way tie and moved into first with five films each.

Overall it was a very good month with some of my favorite new films being A House of Dynamite, The Man in my Basement, Caught Stealing, Predator: Badlands, Hell Drivers, and Cairo Station.

The Movie Journal: October 2025

I watched 48 movies in October. 29 of them were new to me. 19 of them were made before I was born. It was scary month, and I watched 27 horror movies.

It was a good movie month for me. The best of the year in terms of number of movies watched. Over the last few years I’ve gotten to where I watch most of my movies on the weekend, and then weekdays are spent watching TV or doing other things. But this month I had three boxed sets of films to get through (Seven Nightmare on Elm Streets, Six starring Errol Flynn and Four starring Joan Crawford) and review, so I wound up watching a lot of films through the week and then even more on the weekend.

While I did watch a lot of horror movies, I didn’t write about them nearly as much as I usually do for 31 Days of Horror. Partially this was due to all the other writing duties I had – reviewing those boxed sets plus 5 Cool Things and Picks of the Week. But I also intentionally slowed down my horror writing. When I decided to come back to writing after a long break, I did so with the intention of keeping it fun. I don’t want to ever feel like I have to write something in order to keep up this blog. I’ve settled into the realization that this blog will never really take off, so it has to be enjoyable to do. I want to have fun with this, and pressuring myself to write more articles is a fast way to make it feel like work. I figure writing about my movie theme at least once a month is plenty.

Those boxed sets also had a good effect on my most watched stats.

imgbox

The directors list is almost entirely different from last month. There is now a six way tie for first place, with the leaders having only four films watched. I feel like by this point I usually have one or two directors who have taken a clear lead with many more films on the chart than this.

The tie for second place goes on to eight people with just three films watched. With only two more months to go until the end of the year it will be interesting to see if anybody reaches the double digits.

imgbox

The most watched actors list has seen some changes as well. This is mostly due to the boxed sets. Robert Englund jumps up to a tie for first place at eight films, which is entirely due to the Nightmare set. Peter Cushing was on the list last month, but he pushes forward to that first place tie. This is due to all the Hammer Horror films I watched this month. That’s the same reason Christopher Lee is now in second place. I fully expect I’ll watch more Hammer before the year is out, so you can expect both of them to rise even higher. Joan Crawford and Errol Flynn both make their debuts entirely due to boxed sets.

Anyway, here’s the full list.

As mentioned yesterday, I’ve been taking a break and thinking about what I want to do with this blog. Truth be told, since I moved the music to a new site, my stats on The Midnight Cafe have been abysmal. I know I’ll never be famous. I’ll never have a huge following on this site. I’m not sure I’d want to be that big; it seems like more of a hassle than not. But I would like to have some kind of readership.

I don’t know how to do that. I don’t know how the algorithms work anymore. But I figure the more content (a word I hate, but I don’t know a better one) I create, the better chances of people finding my site. So I’m gonna make a go of it. I’m going to try and post several times a day. Sometimes I’ll do full reviews, sometimes I’ll write short ones. I’d like ot post interesting videos, and news items about new releases. Etc. Anything I find interesting or anytime I have something to say, I’ll try to make a post.

I’ll give it a month. If I do start to grow the site, then I’ll continue. If I don’t…well, I’ll find something better to do with my time.

I watched 37 movies in May. 28 of them were new to me. 16 of them were made before I was born. It was Mysteries in May, and I watched 24 of them.

Favorite first-time watches were So Evil My Love, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, I See a Dark Stranger, Mikey and Nicky, and Dune Part Two.

The actors category is filling out nicely. I like seeing more actresses on there.

I still have some work to do with my directors, but we’re making progress.

The Movie Journal: April 2024

sinners movie poster

I watched 34 films in April. Twenty-six of them were new to me. Five of them were made before I was born. The theme for the month was Awesome ’80s in April, and I watched 12 movies from that decade.

It was a bit of an odd month. I had a lot of review stuff to watch, and I continued watching more TV than I have in the past. I should really start writing about that more. I’ve also not been following my rule of watching at least 75% new movies. Out of the 122 movies I’ve watched this year, only 88 (or 72%) have been new to me.

I did a great job of reviewing the movies I watched this month, though I did better in the beginning than the end.

My actors and directors lists are finally starting to look like something.

imgbox

I’ve got a big five-way tie for top actor with three films each. ’80s in April helped Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid jump in, and the death of Val Kilmer prompted me to watch some of his films.

imgbox

The wife and I always love Studio Ghibli films, and that is becoming a weekend staple, which puts Miyazaki in a tie for first place alongside John H. Auer, who directed all the films in the latest noir set from Kino Lorber.

For May, we are once again doing Mysteries in May so that should be fun.

The Movie Journal: February 2025

I watched 29 movies in February. 21 of them were new to me. Seven of them were made before I was born. It was Foreign Film February, and I watched eleven films that were not made by Americans. I’ve intentionally slowed my movie-watching down this year. I decided I wanted to catch up on some television viewing.

As always I intended to watch more movies within my theme and write about them, and as always I got distracted by a lot of other things. I’m especially disappointed that I didn’t make any of my Friday Night Horror Movies fit because there are lots of great foreign horror films. But here we are.

The director and actor categories are still not really worth talking about. There are only four directors that I’ve watched more than a single film of and the actors have not risen above that number either.

The Movie Journal: January 2025

midnight movie poster

I watched 33 movies in January. 25 of them were new to me. 11 of them were made before I was born. I had fully intended to revisit my Great British Movies theme, but that never quite turned out. Instead, it was a very random month full of me watching whatever I came across.

Part of this was because the software I usually use to enable me to watch many things broke and it took me a while to fix it. So I was limited in what I could watch so I watched what I could.

Still a pretty fun month.

As any long-time reader will tell you I do love following the actors and directors I watch the most from in a given year. January is always a little goofy in that regard as the year has just begun and this year is no different. I don’t even know who a couple of these actors are.

So I present these without comment.

The Movie Journal: 2024

image host

I watched 32 movies in December. 22 of them were new to me. 15 were made before I was born.

That’s all I’ll say about December because this is mostly going to be a year in review.

I watched 471 movies in 2024. That’s an average of 39.2 per month or 9 per week. 360 of them were new to me. For the first time since 2019 the number of movies I watched in a year was less than the previous year. I watched an astonishing 529 movies in 2023. I don’t know if I’ll ever beat that record. 471 movies is a lot so you might not believe me when I say I intentionally slowed my watching down a bit last year. I made an effort to do a little more reading and watch some television shows.

My wife and I like watching TV on weekday evenings. We try to find one or two shows we can enjoy and watch together. This year we watched our way through Remington Steele and started watching Moonlighting. We also started Twin Peaks for like the third time. Maybe this time we’ll actually make it through (we like the show, but for some reason, we’ve always gotten distracted and paused it for a long time, and it is a show you really need to have fresh on your mind).

Anyway, I definitely slowed my movie-watching down just a little bit.

I kept up several monthly themes from the previous years, dropped a few, and added several new ones. I still very much like doing these movie themes. I still say it helps me focus my movie viewing and my writing. Though some themes work better than others.

I did not watch enough movies that were made in 2024 to do any type of Top 10 list but I wanted to mention a few of my favorites.

Rebel Ridge: Jeremy Saulnier’s film plays like an update of Rambo: First Blood with less over-the-top action but a terrific central performance from Aaron Pierre. Saulnier has solidified himself as one of our best genre directors and he gets top marks from me here.

Love Lies Bleeding: I love that Kristen Stewart has carved out such an idiosyncratic career after making those Twilight films. Here she plays a reclusive gym manager who falls in love with a bodybuilder and finds herself involved with some rough gangsters. It is a terrific little thriller and it takes some unexpected turns.

Thelma: June Squibb had a long career as a wonderful character actress and this was one of the last films she made before she passed and one of the few in which she got a starring role. She’s perfect as an elderly woman who gets scammed out of some money through a telephone call and decides to take matters into her own hands.

imgbox

Classic Doctor Who dominated my most-watched actors categories for most of the year and it is they who remain at the top here at the end. The only change from last month is that Barbara Stanwyck slipped into a tie for fifth place with seven films watched.

imgbox

Terence Fisher rose to the top of the directors list many months ago and he managed to stay there. He directed many of the Hammer Horror films and I watched a lot of those with my wife on Friday nights. Dario Argento bumped himself to third place mostly on the heels of me watching and reviewing a collection of his made-for-TV movies.

Overall it was a very good year in movie watching. I hope to do more movie writing in the coming year and do a better job of linking to Cinema Sentries when I review something for them. Either way here’s to another great year of movie watching.

The Movie Journal: November 2024

image host

I watched 36 movies in November. 27 of them were new to me. 26 of them were made before I was born. It was Noirvember and I watched 20 film noirs. As per usual I didn’t review nearly as many as I wanted but that’s okay. This is just for fun anyway.

We turned our Thanksgiving break into a Bond weekend and I caught up on a few that I hadn’t seen since I was a kid.

imgbox

I seem to have forgotten to write a movie journal for October, but the director/actor race has stayed more or less the same. I didn’t watch any Classic Doctor Who in November, but William Hartnell had a small role in Odd Man Out which puts him at #1 with 11 films watched. And Christopher Lee took a two-film bump now tied for third place with 9 films watched.

imgbox

John Carpenter smashed into second place with six films watched. But I suspect Terrence Fischer will keep his lead, especially since my plan is to make the month of December all about British films. I’ll have more on that later. And next month I’ll do a full write-up on my year in movies. Until then, here’s the full list.

The Movie Journal: September 2024

rebel ridge poster

I watched 39 movies in September. 27 of them were new to me. 17 were made before I was born. 6 of them were released in 2024, which has to be some kind of record for me. Or at least it has been unusual for me to watch new movies over the last several years.

There was no theme this month, though I did start the Giallo on Criterion series which will continue into October. I’d like to do more series like that, but I’ll be doing so many horror movies this month that may have to wait.

imgbox

The actor’s list contains no surprises. The Doctor Who crew has moved into first place with 10 films. Maureen O’Brien has entered into the list, tied at five films with several other folks. She plays Vicky, the new companion on Doctor Who after Susan left.

imgbox

The director’s list has gotten a bit more interesting. Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci have both entered with three films each. No doubt this is due to me watching all those Gialli. Richard Martin has also entered the race with three films (all Doctor Who stories) and Michael Curtiz enters that tie with three films.

As per usual I started strong with my theme and then I got a little tired of it. Then I had a lot of review movies to watch and write about and then I kind of forgot about it. But I got to see some animated films I otherwise would not have watched so I consider it a plus.

The actor’s race has stayed more or less the same. Almost everyone moved up a notch with one additional film watched by each. Alan Ladd and Peter Cushing popped into the rankings although to be fair there are several other actors who have five films to their name, but Letterboxd only shows ten faces in their ratings.

Director-wise things are still tame. I don’t know why I haven’t focused in on a few more directors this year. By this time, I’ve seen quite a lot of films by a few directors, but this year I’ve spread them out. John Ford did bump up a film putting him in second place and Yoshiaki Kawaijiri landed in third place. He directed three of the animated films I watched this year. I keep thinking sometime soon I’ll watch a bunch of Scorsese films or something, but I keep not doing it.

Speaking of Scorsese I thought about making this month Scorsese in September, but ultimately decided against it. I’m seriously thinking about watching his entire oeuvre chronologically and talking about everyone. But we’ll see how that goes.
