Tech question: How can the FLAC ZIP actually be smaller than the MP3 ZIP?
I thought that I would see a part 2 ZIP of FLAcs posted today. Instead, the opened ZIP of FLACs contains all of them.
Good question. I don’t have an answer. I noticed the FLAC files were unusually small and when I converted to MP3 they actually got larger. But I’m not smart enough to understand the reasons. It might mean the FLACs aren’t really lossless?
Anybody want to help answer this?
Haven’y tried this show yet, but one possibility is that it is mono??
FLAC is intelligent in this regard and doesn’t simply produce a ‘stereo’ 2-track capture of the mono channel in the way that mp3 does
should be easy to establish with a pair of headphones
should add that a mono source, combined with a high FLAC value (ie best fit compression algorithm) can result in very small FLAC file sizes, particularly when the frequency range of the source is not very high.
Thanks DD.
That all sounds applicable to this, a ’67 sdbd recording.
Thanks for sharing, as always. Love your blog man 🙂
My Ex-Father-In-Law, Bob Huot, was an English Professor at Cal Poly on San Luis Obispo from the 1960s to the late 1980s and was on the concert board at the university. He was responsible for bring the Airplane, and also the Doors, to Cal Poly in 1967. Unfortunately no recording exists for the Doors show but I remember talking with Bob and he said the the Doors concert was cut short because Ray Manzarek was sick…or maybe too high? My ex-wife was two years old then and was at both shows, though she has no memory of either.
That’s very cool.
My mom saw the Doors somewhere. I think she walked out on them. Said they were too dirty 🙂
‘Too Dirty?’ As in their language or their appearance?
Probably a bit of both, but she always mentions their unclean appearance.
Thanks for this show, Mat.
