Sorry about not having the full set list. Etree doesn’t have it and my quick google searching didn’t turn anything up. These are all full songs with names and lyrics, but I’m too lazy to really figure them out. If somebody can figure them out, please do post.

Otherwise this is another fine show from Merl Saunders. Lots of good groovy rock and roll.  The sound is decent, it is definitely an audience recording but it isn’t too muddled.

The tape was subsequently stolen from Gans and put into circulation. Setlist and information courtesy of The Jerry Site.

Because it comes from Grisman the sounds is really good, loads better than the audience recordings of the other shows from this run that I’ve posted.

Many years ago I was invited to an acquaintances house and there met a friend of the acquaintance. We hung out, listened to music and had a nice get to know each other session. At some point the conversation turned to jazz and one of the guys asked me if I liked the genre. I said “sure” and then talked about Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.

The Jazz Fans response was cordial, but there was an air of superiority when he said “oh, you like vocal jazz.” The implication was that I didn’t like real jazz. Far-Out Jazz. Bee Bop. Improv. Hard-core jazz. Seeing a copy of Miles Davis on his shelf I said something about him, but all I really knew was that my old roommate had a copy of “the Birth of Cool” and I had listened to it a few times.

That conversation stayed with me like a bruise. I wanted to like jazz. I wanted to have those credentials. Over time I got copies of Miles Davis albums. And Coltrane. And Monk. I listened to them. Sometimes I liked them. I still like them, sometimes. I mean I dig the craziness that is Bitches Brews, but it just isn’t something I can listen to often.

And that’s the thing, somewhere in the vibrations of time I’ve realized that its ok not to love jazz. To dig Billie Holiday and not Charlie Parker. To prefer Louis Armstrong’s later period over his earlier one. Etc. Screw the snobs if they scorn me. Which of course they don’t do for I’m pretty much a non entity in those circles. And that’s ok, too.

Anyways I got this disk many years ago through a trade or maybe a vine. I was in the middle of my trying to be jazz hip phase and also trying to ever expand my semi-obscure artists column in my trading list. Honestly, though, even though I’ve had this show, for at the minimum of five years, I can’t say I’ve ever listened to it all the way through.

The quality is great, the sound clear. From what I have heard the playing is fine, but because of the obscure nature of the band, the unfamiliarity with the songs, and you know the jazz, I just never reach for the disk.

But here we have it, I give it to you. Don’t let my ramble keep you from downloading. If you like jazz, especially improvisational, instrumental jazz, give it a go. I suspect you’ll like it. If not, well then I’m but one step closer to uploading everything I own.
