From the original uploader:
Picked up something I haven’t seen elsewhere.
This single sbd CD features Jerry Garcia & Buddy Cage jamming and
noodling with a few Marmaduke vocals and a Weir vocal (Seasons).
Someone (Marmaduke) picks up a bass halfway through)
Very interesting artifact, not from the vault. Session runs until reel
runs out (47:30)

Here’s what I have on this:

Jam Session Info
Here’s the note from James that came with the show:
Now, to the other goody I sent you. Here’s the story on that. A friend of
mine who does sound and production work here in St. Louis was taking slide
guitar lessons and went through the archive of open reel tapes they had
there and found the one in question. He asked to borrow it and took it home
and did a 24 bit digital transfer from the mono 7″ open reel. This hasn’t
been heard by many more people than Brad, myself and a few others in 30
years!!! I was pretty damn excited about the discovery and glad that I was
only the second person that had heard it counting Brad after he mastered the
tape. As far as I know at this point it’s Jerry Garcia, Buddy Cage and other
members of NRPS. Other than that that’s all I know right now. The Grateful
Dead’s archives don’t even have this tape. Pretty fun stuff to listen too
even though it’s a lot of noodling and such. I kinda like it myself.
Everything was plugged straight into the open reel deck. So the source would be:
7″ mono open reel > 24 bit transfer > resample > CD-R

shns from RowJimmy Kelly on 8/30/01

Track 1 is Workin’ Man Blues
Track 3 is Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud, Loud Music)
Track 6 is How High the Moon
Track 10 is Take Me Back to Tulsa

  1. Just an FYI:
Don’t know if this is a correct date – 12/7/71 – because the GD & NRPS were in NY playing at the Felt Forum….

  2. Hey Mat. This show has always had a lot of mystery and questions around it. Either the date or the venue has to be wrong. The Dead played 12- 6 and 12-7 -71 at the Felt Forum in New York. I don’t think Jerry and Bobby would have gone to Washington, DC for a jam session, and then back to NYC for a show that same night; one night after playing a show in NYC. My best guess is that this is from either 10-22 or 10-23-70. The Dead played McDonough Arena, Georgetown U., in Washington, DC on 10-23. This would obviously put both Jerry and Bobby in in Washington, DC on the same date. Their previous show was at Tyrone Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis, MN 10-18-70 so I am sure they were in Washington, DC before their show on 10-22. That is my best guess but only a guess. I am however, 99% certain this couldn’t have been from Jetty’s on 12-7-71. I leave the 1% uncertain because I was only 5 at the time and most certainly was not there to see it lol.

  3. I have a copy of this I got from another source. He labels it 12/9/71, Scotty’s Music Store, St. Louis. That date/city would make sense for two reasons. First, the Dead played St Louis on 12/10/71. And second, Buddy Cage is on this tape and Buddy had just replaced Jerry in NRPS sometime in November, 1971. That’s all I know. A true rarity!

  4. Alright, the other sources I looked at do seem to indicate a date of 12/09. I have changed the MP3s to reflect that (I’m uploading now, will change the Amazon link when that is done). I also made a note in the text file for the MP3s, but I am leaving the FLAC files alone as I don’t like messing with that. Thanks everyone.

  5. Picky, Picky. Always Something To Bitch About. Ya Do Some Research You Can Figure It Out. I Want To Take This Opportunity To Wish You A Hippy Thanksgiving Matt. To You And Yours. I Am Very Thankful For All Your Hard Work And Generosity. All The Best From Alexandria, VA. (Way Too Close To D.C. And The Current Occupant Of The White House)
