Trouble Ahead

My Amazon Drive just put me on notice. They are discontinuing their Drive services in December of next year. That gives me plenty of time to figure something out, but for the moment I don’t know that I want to continue uploading shows to the Drive if they are just going to disappear next year.

This is going to take some serious contemplation.

The thought of having to reupload all the shows on my drive to some other service and repost good links on the blog just sounds exhausting. I could just upload news shows and then reupload old shows whenever I get a request. That is a possibility.

I’m also contemplating the idea of some kind of newsletter or substack. I’ve really enjoyed the times when I’ve shared shows from a particular tour or some other similar theme. I like the idea of a biweekly newsletter in which I could share all the shows from a certain time period or maybe shows from a certain city or venue, etc. I love the idea of doing something like that but also writing an essay about those particular shows.

I also like the idea of doing mix-tapes. I could create the greatest hits from different tours or years, or whatever. Or do mixes of really great songs from different artists. I’ve done a few of those in the past and they were a lot of fun. If I did that I’d probably also share all the shows used to make the mixes.

Or maybe I’ll do something else. Or nothing at all. I really don’t know what is next.

For now, I’m taking a break. I’m gonna need some time to figure out where I want to go from here. This makes an excellent opportunity for you all to start digging through the blog and downloading anything you don’t already have. Whatever comes next I’ll definitely keep you all in the loop and will post about it on the blog.

  1. No matter what, Matt. THANKS from the bottom of my collector heart for all your efforts in sharing so many great shows! Keep up the good work! Don’t leave us alone! TKS again!!!

    • Maybe. I’m currently paid up until April of 2023. I don’t know if I’ll renew it. I may even try to cancel the service and get some prorated money back. I just don’t know what I’m going to do. So download everything you want as fast as you can.

When I figure something out I’ll make a new post. I won’t shut the drive down for a few weeks at least. Most likely I’ll just let it expire in April.

  2. Don’t you just hate it when services leave you in the lurch just like that….. there ought to be a law against it…

  3. Mat–You deserve a break. Your archive is huge beyond my capacity for listening but I welcome the challenge. Thank you for everything so far. I look forward to the next stage of evolution.

  4. Sorry to hear the news Mat – It’s a pain for sure. Whatever you choose to do, thanks for the work you have done to date – its been much appreciated.

  5. Take all the time you need, Mat. You gave us so much fantastic music over the many years, so whatever you’ll decide will be great, I’m sure. 😎

  6. I can understand your frustration at the thought of having to upload everything all over again. Do whatever is best for you, but I do hope you can continue in some fashion. It just wouldn’t be the same without you.

  7. Thanks every one for your kind words. I’m starting my vacation tomorrow so I’ll be out of pocket for a few days. I may reply to some comments on my phone but mostly I’ll be gone.

I really and truly have no idea what I’m going to do next. At the moment returning to the blog with a new cloud host just doesn’t feel like what I want. But I don’t know what I want.

Right now I’m busy downloading some stuff on my Amazon Drive that is also sitting on a hard drive that will likely crash soon. I want to back those up before Amazon goes away. Then I’ll probably spend my time actually organizing all my files. That’s a project I’ve slowly worked on for many months now so I figure I’ll throw myself headlong into it.

It seems dumb to upload new stuff to the Amazon Drive since it will be going away next year. But it also seems dumb to try and get a new hosting company while all my old links sit nicely on Amazon (and since I’ve already spent money on Amazon).

Best guess is that I’m gonna take a few weeks/months to ponder the possibilities and then I’ll make a decision.

  8. Hi Mat. I’m sorry to hear that another hurdle has turned up. I appreciate all the work you put into this and I hope you do decide to keep this going in some way. For now enjoy your well deserved break.

  9. Hi Mat,
Have you done something in a previous life to upset somebody?!
Seems life is a series of hurdles coming ever thicker and faster for you.
    Hope all goes well.
    John A

  10. Mat,

You’re a legend! You’ve given us all so much music, so generously, I can only be thankful. I can imagine how vexing it is to figure out a new path. I think some of the ideas you floated above are great.

I appreciate you and just about every day listen to a show you’ve shared. Now that is saying something! Thank you for everything, and I’ll be stopping in as I always do to see what emerges as the plan for Next.

  11. Mat, Thank you again for your dedication (deadication?) and generosity. I’ll miss my daily mails, but will wait with hopes that you will find something interesting on the path forward. Looks like you already have good ideas. Positive, Rojah

  12. Just stopped by to echo the above comments, Matt – you’ve gone above and beyond what a music lover could expect and whatever you decide is for the best. I hope you find your bliss in whatever you do. Cheers!

  13. Hi Mat. This may offer a solution. You can choose a new storage service and then instead of uploading each thing separately this service allows you to transfer or sync up from one to another. Hopefully this can be of help.

  14. Mat, thank you for all the music you have provided already! You are a treasure! Anything you come up with to hopefully continue will be icing on the cake ( and I do love icing 😀 ) Thank you so much and enjoy you much deserved break, however long it is!!

  15. I’ve set up an FTP server to enable access to my huge archive of Grateful Dead and related bands. Some 8 or so TB. Email me at for access – away from home till next week, so won’t be able to enable access till then. Small donations would be appreciated, as I have had to buy a public IP address and upgrade my upload speeds and leaving my PC on 24/7 has suddenly become very expensive in the UK.
