OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was a show I’d waited about five months for, as I am a ‘UUGE’ David Lindley fan. I’m sure that Donald Trump would be too, after Mr. Dave dedicated two songs to him! (The second song that Lindley dedicated to Trump was ‘Mr Snake Head’, played with his solid-body Turkish Oud, which he remarked was a Middle Eastern ‘Illegal Alien’, that was imported.)
I was fortunate enough to score an 11th row DEAD Center ticket, and equally fortunate to get a nice polite, quiet crowd around me.

Lindley opened with a Warren Zevon tune that I have not heard him do before, so that was a treat. I love his Zevon covers, especially ‘The Vast Indifference Of Heaven’, and ‘Seminole Bingo’, not to mention the classic ‘Werewolves Of London’. I’d love to hear him cover ‘Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner’. After hearing his new song, ‘Mr Snake Head’, that might not be too much of a stretch of the imagination!

Actually, I was thinking, by the sound, that he was going to open with ‘Revenge Will Come’, but he played ‘Poor Poor Pitiful Me’ instead, with ‘Revenge Will Come’ being played later in the set.

The sound in the Lobero Theatre is always very good, and this time was no exception. I have been recording there for years, with a variety of microphones. (In 1998 I recorded David Lindley & Wally Ingram there with two Neumann KM-184s on a T-Bar into a DAT recorder, and hid the relatively large microphones with my long hair let down in front of me.) In retrospect the KM-140s, with active cables, are MUCH easier to hide!

Lindley confessed to the crowd that it was actually his blue Ostrich shoes that requested ‘Eva Braun’ be dedicated to Trump. Those shoes were quite a sight to see, along with his loud polyester shirt.

A roadie brought another guitar out on stage and placed it in a separate stand while we waited during the break for the second set to start. Lindley explained that this guitar, which had a sound hole in the upper left corner of the body, was to be auctioned off and he might very well bid on it. I remember seeing Arlo Guthrie play the same type of guitar the last time I went to an Arlo show. He picked up the guitar and tried to plug his cable into it but for some reason the pickup was not compatible with his gear and he couldn’t get it to play with a decent amplified sound.

I’m sorry that Mr. Dave doesn’t seem to take his Saz guitars on the road anymore, as I haven’t seem him play them since 2011 or so. I wonder why. I really liked to hear him play that instrument.

‘Tiki Torches’ is always a crowd pleaser, but I think it can get kind of disgusting. Maybe I just have a weak stomach. I liked ‘Pretty Polly’, and also ‘The Cuckoo Bird’. I would have loved to have seen Lindley with Kaleidoscope in the late 60s.

I thought it was funny that there was some guy up from on the right side that kept interjecting bits of nonsense, at at one point someone yelled ’Shut Up!’ Glad he was not near me, which is usually what happens!

It was nice to hear Lindley’s Jimmy Stewart voice between tunes. I always love it when he does his Stewart impressions.

Lindley spoke about the flooding in Houston and urged people to help. He then went into ‘Well, Well, Well’ for the encore.

After the show got out I made my way to In & Out Burger in Santa Barbara and had a late dinner at almost 11 pm. I got home at midnight and was already thinking about the Los Lobos concert the next day, which nearly turned into a full scale fiasco. That story is detailed elsewhere, but suffice to say everything turned out OK in the end and there was much rejoicing!

Thanks so much to Flying M for his amazing post production skills. The raw files sounded really good when I listened to the first set in my truck on the way home from the show, but the finished recording sounds incredible.

Flying M Notes:
A quiet acoustic show so the enthusiastic applause was a bit over the top.
Harmonic Balancing and light compression brought out more detail and raising the side channel gave additional depth.
Amplitude increased by 10dB reducing stray peaks as required to prevent clipping.
Cleaned away the loudest clapping and handling noises and reduced the applause by 7dB.
