OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was my first Dick Dale show, and my friends Dave and Brian and myself drove almost three hours in the pouring rain to Santa Cruz in my ’91 F150 regular cab pick up. Yeah, it was a bit cramped on the bench seat. I really wanted to see ‘The King Of The Surf Guitar’ live, because I had heard so many stories from my dad about seeing Dick Dale & The Del Tones at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa in 1961/62. My dad and his surfer friends used to go see Dick Dale and do the ‘Surfer Stomp’ in the old ballroom, which dated back to the big-band era of the 1930s and 40s. He said that at high tide, the surf from the Pacific Ocean would wash right up to the front steps of the ballroom and you would get your feet wet when entering. He told me that the city would not allow concerts without patrons wearing ties, so there was a big can filled with ties in the lobby and they wold ‘loan’ you one upon entry and you would have to return it when you left. My dad said that Dick would play a right-handed guitar upside down and backwards, and also play each instrument in the band one at a time.
Dick Dale started playing in 1955 in Southern California and started what would one day be called ‘Heavy Metal’. He played with guitar strings that were as big as bridge cables and would shred a guitar pic in a song or two. He mostly played Southern California and did not tour until the early to mid 90s, and had a resurgence because of the fact that Quinton Tarantino used ‘Misirlou’ in the movie ‘Pulp Fiction’. (Which to this date I’ve never seen).
There is a minor sound level adjustment in “Shredded Heat.” “Maria Elena” and “The Eliminator” both cut in. There is a gap at the end of “Fever.” And “Nitro” cuts in after the spoken introduction.
