OldNeumanntapr Notes:
I believe that this was my first Joe Ely concert. I was really impressed with this show, and I came away with a real appreciation of Ely’s ‘Americana’-based music. This was the first time that I had heard the song ‘Gallo Del Cielo’ and, though I am definitely not in favor of cock fighting, I really liked the imagery of desperation and hardship and hope that the song exemplified. Joe told some humorous stories, one in particular about a roofing job that Jesse ‘Guitar’ Taylor hooked him into where they were fired for tearing the roof off the wrong house in the hot Texas summer. ‘We only missed it by one’. Too funny!
The Lobero is a beautiful small theatre with wonderful acoustics and I am lucky to have recorded there so many times over the years. This might have been the last time I used the Nyquist omni microphones at the Lobero because I bought my first set of Neumanns, KM184s, shortly after this show. Thanks, as always, to my friend Dave for getting me a ticket for this show and urging me to see Joe Ely. As luck would have it, I was able to get tickets to see Joe Ely for two consecutive nights, with the following night at the Forum on Marsh in San Luis Obispo.
