This weekend was the only time I have been to the Greek Theatre at Berkeley. Sadly I never made it there to see or record the Dead. It’s a beautiful amphitheater with an awesome view of San Francisco. Unfortunately I don’t have really good memories of the venue, because driving in Berkeley is royal pain. It seemed to take us 40 years to get to the show from Oakland, where my friend Ron lived. Plus, Security almost threw me out for taking photos of my friend Taper Ron in the tapers section. I had no idea that you couldn’t bring cameras into the Greek. The Dead were always cool with (non flash) cameras. They pulled me out to the front gates and proceeded to confiscate the battery out of my Nikon FM2N , and I had to plead with them not to eject me by saying that I had a taping rig set up and running. They looked at my Nikon FM2N and 80-200 f/2.8 AF lens and said, ‘How did you get THAT in here?’. Ah, in my taping bag with all my other gear. Like I said, I had no idea you couldn’t bring in cameras. The show was good, and I really liked hearing Warren Haynes play with Phil. ‘She Said She Said’ was awesome. Man, Warren has some pipes! For some reason, lost to time, I lost the encore and had to get a copy from another recording.

I stayed the night at a friend of my friend Ron’s in Oakland and went back to the Greek to record the Sunday Phil show.
