This was the show that Bob Dylan opened for Phil Lesh & Friends and Bob wouldn’t allow any of the taper’s microphones to be placed on the stands until after his set. I got a front-of-board DAT recording of Bob’s set later from Eugene Hu so I wasn’t that worried about not being able to run tape for the Dylan set. There was an official from Dylan’s crew that walked through the taper section and made sure that no one was setting up microphones while Dylan played.
As we were waiting for Phil’s set, either during Dylan’s set or at the break, I can’t remember, I was talking with Charlie Miller. While we were chatting, toward the right side of the tapers section up on the lawn, Charlie spotted a bag of really nice Indica bud lying on the grass. It was either a quarter or half ounce. Charle picked it up and looked at the nearest person and said, ‘Hey, you dropped your weed!’ The person looked at him and his eyes got wide and reached out for the bag. It was then that Charlie pulled his hand back and said, ‘Wait a minute, that’s not yours!’ Not knowing who it belonged to, he took the only sensible and reasonable course
of action; He divvied up the pot and handed it out bud-by-bud to various people. He gave me a rather tasty nodule that I had quite a lot of fun ingesting for the rest of the afternoon! I remarked to him that he looked like a ‘Jolly Green Psychedelic Santa’! It definitely made for a pleasant concert experience!
