Bob Dylan – Down Under, Out West & Up North, 1998

Bob Dylan
1998 DOWN UNDER, OUT WEST & UP NORTH
Pink Panther Records
the 1998 fall tour of Australia, New Zealand, US West Coast & North-East North America.

100% lossless FLAC from best available sound sources.

1998 was a very big year for bob, but the heavy touring schedule started to get the better of him
in the third & last long leg starting in Australia in mid-august & finishing in Atlanta in mid-november.

this is not to say that there is nothing to recommend this leg – quite the contrary.

but there are:
a lot of concerts for which tapes do not circulate,
some tapes with dire sound that do circulate,
some great performances in very orginary sound, & worse still,
a number of poor performances in pristine sound.

australia suffers the worst with sound quality, but the performances are generally very good.

new zealand has better sounding tapes, including one of the two best tapes of 1998 –
1998-09-10 Wellington (Taper: RL – LB-2829) – an extraordinary tape.
1998-06-11 Copenhagen (Taper: MM – LB-6308) is the other one.

once back in north america, the performances become more & more erratic –
often great concerts are followed by poor ones the next night.

Puyallup & Minneapolis are the most frustrating – great sounding tapes & ordinary performances.

but bob is sure not on autopilot – he continues his practice begun in europe that summer
of playing large numbers of songs once or twice during this long tour leg – this must have been demanding on both bob & the band
but these songs never sound under-rehearsed & they are often brilliant

the TOOM material is generally played brilliantly, as is the acoustic material from the 80s & 70s.

this tour leg is a bumpy ride – buckle up, turn up the volume & absorb the wonder of it
(even australia despite the sound – except townsville which makes lou reed playing white light, white heat sound like frank sinatra).

best song? Forever Young from Christchurch – it is probably the definitive performance of the song from any era.

when you look at 1998, you have got to seriously admire bob’s work ethic – unbelievable achievement.

but like 1978, when he did something similar, it started to take its toll late in the year.

bob might have survived histoplasmosis, but the “rock star” did die in mid-1997.

1998 was when bob started to get serious & grow up.

many, many thanks to chambre (& the ancient jedi knights), 10haaf & lilraven
for their enormous & generous assistance to help find & assemble the FLAC tapes.

thanks to gopherstick & andrew muir for their opinions & analysis.

mainly fantastic sound (an occasional rough one) & even more fantastic performances.

84 ball-tearing, sensational tracks
84 different songs (no repeats)

8 hours & 15 minutes of music

TOUR STATISTICS

Total concerts played (40); being
Australia & New Zealand (15),
US West Coast (8),
US & Canada North (17)

There are 3 missing tapes:
Calgary,
Edmonton,
Saskatoon.

The setlists for the 3 missing concerts are known.
No new songs appeared in these 3 concerts.

There are 3 tapes in dire sound that may as well be missing:
Perth,
Darwin,
Townsville.

Total concerts taped (37)

The setlists were as variable as those of the 1998 European summer tour.
Again there was only a very small number of “core” songs, & a very large number of songs played only a few times.

& like 1998 Europe, the TOOM songs were prominent but by no means dominating.

Bob seems to be challenging himself with his back-catalogue, particularly with the acoustic songs.

Of the 84 songs played:

4 songs were played 30 times or more.
7 songs were played 25 times or more.
11 songs were played 20 times or more.
56 songs were played less than 5 times:
4 songs were played 5 times)
8 songs (4)
9 songs (3)
11 songs (twice)
