The 2002 Winter Tour often gets overshadowed by the 2001 Fall Tour right before it
and the 2002 Fall Tour that would come later that year, but with a closer look I
found it to be a very solid tour leg consisting of 18 dates throughout the
south-eastern United States, leading up to the 2002 Grammy Awards on February 27
(3 days after the leg ended). It should be noted that the best sounding tape from
the tour is from February 9 (Atlanta), and thus I did not include any tracks from
it as the entire show stands on its own. This is merely a companion piece to that
show, and to the wonderful Lonesome Day Blues released on BS8.

Because Love and Theft was released less than 5 months before the start of this
tour, all of the tracks from that album are very similar to their released studio
version. Although the arrangements aren’t new, you can tell Bob is really feeling
these tracks as in most cases, the LAT songs were the highlights of each show.
Cry A While, Lonesome Day Blues (feel free to substitute the released Sunrise
version in for this Jacksonville one), Summer Days, and Honest With Me are great
showcases for the band as they really rock out. High Water, Mississippi, and
Floater are equally good too, and I find Sugar Baby to be even better than the
studio version. The phrasing seems better on this Dallas take than the LAT version.

Besides the LAT tracks, the most consistent parts of every show were the acoustic
set that opened, and the shorter acoustic set mid-way through the show. One Too
Many Mornings, Boots Of Spanish Leather, and Girl From The North Country are all
very beautiful, reminiscent of those great 2000 European vocals. On the other hand,
Tangled Up In Blue and Desolation Row show how great Bob and the band can rock
out on the acoustic numbers.

Gotta Serve Somebody makes for a fun opener, and Bob really lets loose, Love Sick
really capitalizes on the moody groove that it’s capable of in this arrangement,
and Just Like A Woman from Orlando is one of the best versions in the NET that I’ve
heard. Bob really digs into it in the second verse and decides to stay there.

I added the LB numbers next to the dates so that if you like the sound quality
or a song from a particular show, I urge you to seek out the full recording. Nearly
every date on this tour was a consistently good show, especially the first
handful of dates in Florida.

I’d like to dedicate this to our friend Hollowhorn, who generously uploaded all
18 of these shows and made it capable for me and everyone else to listen to them.

Much has been written about Bob’s transition into Christianity, & you can read some of these views below. In terms of the music, 1979 was a strong year in terms of performance, but with only 26 concerts & one TV appearance, it was a short one.

Not counting the Queens Of Rhythm songs without Bob, we have 19 new songs,including the Slow Train Coming ones released on 20 August 1979, & more surprisingly most of the Saved album songs, which would not even be recorded until February 1980.

Setlists are quite static (but not entirely so), but this does not mean that the concerts sound the same.

The Slow Train Coming album, recorded in April & May 1979, is rich & lush due in no small part to Mark Knopfler. It is one of Bob’s best sounding albums – light years away from the raw sound of Street Legal, which preceded it.

However, the first public outing of three Slow Train Coming songs on Saturday Night Live in NY on 20 October were even rawer than Street Legal.

When the concerts began in San Francisco in early November, the sounds sounded measured & sparse,as if the band was playing slowly & carefully because it was still learning to play them.There were no “gospel rants” (let’s call them sermons) in early November.

However, starting with the last San Francisco concert on 16 November, everything changed – Bob let rip. The music changed from black & white to technicolor, & the sermons started.

The late November & early December concerts are confrontational with the audience, but the music soars. As drummer Jim Keltner has commented, on occasions Bob seemed to levitate of the floor!
1979 Santa Monica is without doubt one of Bob’s all-time great residencies, & all five of them are available on great sound.

You can love or hate what Bob is doing, but there is no doubt that he is sincere about it.
