Hello again, listeners. For the month of July, I’ve created a new compilation centered on the period of time in which Bob Dylan moved from his ‘country’ phase out into a more aggressive, edgy sound. You can hear elements of both here, from the down-home singalong vibe of Rock Me, Mama or Sweet Amarillo to the outlaw ballads from the Desire record. And between these, of course, lies one of the most treasured sets of outtakes in Dylan’s catalog – the Blood On The Tracks New York Session. From this, Lily, Rosemary and the Jack Of Hearts is the most fascinating. The others hew closely to cuts found on the Bootleg Series, Volume 1-3, though they are distinct in their own ways. In particular, the rendition of Idiot Wind featured here contains no organ fills, and seems to have been very rare until recently.

I hope the collection sounds as good to you as it does to me – it’s a relaxing listen, full of long, generally laid back songs. Hopefully it’s a fine match for sipping a beer and letting the mind wander along with these outlaws in (and out) love. Be it Hurricane, Joey, Billy, or the Jack of Hearts, you’ll find someone here to hum along with.

This one is excellent. Iíve never heard these versions of most of the songs, and there are a few songs I never heard before. The sound quality varies somewhat, but itís all excellent with only a few exceptions.
These “Hollow Horn” boots come in a unique kind of case, not a normal plastic case. I’ve adapted the artwork so it will fit in a standard jewel case.

The 1975 version of the Rolling Thunder Revue has long been the stuff of legend with Bobcats, up there with 65, 66, 78, 95 & 99.

The official Bootleg Series Vol.5 (Live 1975) focuses on killer Dylan tracks from Cambridge, & the 2nd Boston & 2nd Montreal shows.
This compilation avoids all the official tracks (there are more on Renaldo & Clara and Biograph/Side Tracks), &, more importantly,
provides most of the circulating tracks from the other performers, which are as equally brilliant as the Dylan tracks.
Bob Neuwirth, Joan Baez, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Joni Mitchell & Roger McGuinn give some astonishing performances.

The Dylan tracks emphasise the new Blood On The Tracks & Desire albums but there is plenty of delving into the 60s as well.

Music styles of folk, country, blues, jazz psychedelic rock & hippie craziness mix effortlessly here.

In recent years, more & more complete & partial soundboards recorded by promoter Bill Graham have become generally available.
Many of these only appeared in mp3 format but the sound is astonishing & it is now possible to get a much better picture of the non-Dylan performances.

So here you have it in FLAC, even if much of it is technically lossy FLAC.

Enjoy, it doesn’t get much petter than this.

NOTES: The first NET leg of 2004 saw Freddy Koella getting into a deeper groove with the band, which was augmented by a second drummer (Little Feat’s Richie Hayward) for the first time since 1992. However, immediately after this explosive leg of touring, Koella departed and was swiftly replaced with Boston blues-rock guitarist Stu Kimball, who would ultimately become Bob’s longest-serving guitarist.


Initially, Stu assumed lead guitar duties while Larry Campbell filled the multi-instrumentalist role on pedal steel and mandolin, although his departure at the end of 2004 led for another major band shakeup in early 2005 – which included two replacements for Larry as well as the first (and to date, only) female band member of the NET.
Larry’s two replacements were lead guitarist Denny Freeman and versatile pedal steel player Donnie Herron, who also shined on electric mandolin and violin. However, this didn’t stop Bob from adding another violinist – Elena Fremerman, a country-rock “fiddle and bow” player who fit Bob’s style perfectly and was an instant fan favorite.
This also proved to be a short stint however, soon leaving the band as a solid six-man lineup that would remain constant for the next four years. After this, Bob embarked on a tour of minor league baseball stadiums with Willie Nelson, as he had the previous summer.


Along with his employment of country-rock musicians like Herron and Fremerman and joint tour with Merle Haggard in the spring of 2005, this seemed to be a move meant to emphasize his country leanings rather than his associations with rock and folk.

But for all of his efforts, Bob’s embracement of a calliope setting on his electric keyboard (rather than the straight piano sound he had been favoring for the past two years) added a circus-like atmosphere to the proceedings and further frustrated efforts to categorize the ever-wandering musician.

2006 also saw the release of a heavyweight documentary about Bob’s past (No Direction Home, directed by Martin Scorsese) while the publicity machine for his next album was also set in motion. Those who saw him in concert heard songs both old and new, but the organ guaranteed that they would remain unable to pin down what it was that was actually happening at Bob Dylan’s concerts.
