Source: S:(FM?)>LP(?)>?>DAT
Transfer: DAT>Tascam DA-20mkII > coax > Delta Dio 2496 > Wavelab 4.0a (@ 24/48)
Mastering: Wavelab 4.0a > X-Noise (23.1 dB threshold & 85% reduction) + Waves L1-Ultramaximzer (-1 dB left channel + 4 dB threshold increase) > conversion to 16/44.1 > WAV > FLAC
Track 1 begins muddy and indistinct, but improves quickly.
Original uploader’s notes:

Broadcast on KSAN. This recording came to me dated “??-??-73.” It contains songs that appear on the 1975 album Home Plate and the band here also played on 1977’s Sweet Forgiveness, so 1973 is almost certainly wrong.

There are several hints about the correct date. Bonnie Raitt says that Taj Mahal is played at the Boarding House (also in San Francisco) that night and that Chris Smither played at the same venue, which is “my favorite club,” about one year ago in February. Unfortunately, neither of those hints has helped me to find a definative date. Bonnie Raitt also says that “We just got off the road, we’ve been on the road since March 15, and, uh, went to England, had a [great?] time . . . and then spent the last 10 days w/ Little Feat, down through the Southeast . . . .” Finally, at the end of track 9, Bonnie Raitt mentions that there are other fans waiting outside to get into the venue, which suggests that this is an early show and that there was a second performance that night.

According to the liner notes on a Bonnie Raitt bootleg called “Collections” owned by a collector in Europe, this was recorded on 05.24.76 at the Great American Music Hall and broadcast on 05.26.76, (That bootleg contains two songs that are missing from this source: Women Be Wise and You Got To Know How.) So, that’s how I’ve dated this performance. If anyone knows for sure, please let the world know, too.

Mastering Notes:

The original DAT was quite noisy, though not really hissy like an analog tape. There are, here and there, tiny pops and ticks that sound very much like an LP playback, including a few rough boundaries where the recording tape started and stopped. There is also some distortion in the right channel at certain frequencies (check out the piano at the begining of My First Night Without You). None of this is very serious compared to the overall quality of the recording.

I believe that this is an LP > DAT or something similar, and the background noise is a line noise added by the stereo equipment. Whatever it was, I removed it using the X-noise plugin, which required relatively a lot of reduction (23.1 dB threshold, 85% reduction). As for pops and ticks, none of them are loud and you won’t notice them unless you’re listening to the spaces between songs.

The left channel was on average 3 dB louder than the right. I used the Waves L1-Ultramaximzer to balance the channels and increase headroom by 4 dB.

I have three sources for this show.

B&W Photos By OldNeumanntapr (Pentax MX w/80-200 f/4.5-5.6 Maraxar zoom w/T-Max 3,200 film)

OldNeumanntapr Notes; This was the fourth show that I recorded with my friend Gene’s Nakamichi CM 300 shotguns and Sony TCD-D10 DAT, and also my very first Grateful Dead New Year’s Eve show. It was my 31st concert recording overall that I had made. [I’m lumping the Bonnie Raitt opener in with the Dead as #31.] (This was also my very first ‘Dark Star’, though it was only the first verse.) I remember that right after the show on the 30th finished we got in line for priority tickets for NYE that would be handed out in the morning, and we stayed in the cold Oakland night air all night long. It was worth it because, with the addition of the priority tickets, we were able to get a decent spot in the tapers section.

Bonnie Raitt opened and she was blisteringly hot, coming off of a rocking comeback album. I wish I would have had a spare DAT blank and NP22H NiCad battery to re4cord her set. I recorded it with my D6, but the DAT sounded oh so much better!

I shot some photos with my Pentax MX of the NYE fireworks just before the second set started. I developed and printed them in the Cuesta College darkroom, because I was going to community college at the time and was on the newspaper staff. I think I even used newspaper film for this one because I was poor.

This was the first of three New Year’s Eve Grateful Dead shows that I would make it inside for. I recorded the 1989 and 1990 shows from the tapers section but the 1991 show we got shut out when we got inside and found that the entire tapers section had coats over the seats ‘reserving’ it for others. We ended up sitting in the nose bleed seats for that, last, NYE show with the taping gear still in the bag. I also recorded two ‘Other Ones’ New Year’s Eve shows at the Oakland Coliseum in 2000 and 2002. I included a scan of all three of my New Year’s Eve ticket stubs together, though I wasn’t able to record the 1991 NYE show.

Do NOT Convert To MP3. Enjoy! Share freely, don’t sell, play nice, don’t run with scissors, etc. 😉

The Story from the original uploader:

Like any story passed on with some music this needs to be
taken with a grain of salt. Here what was told to me and this
is what I know.

An intern at WMMR in the 80’s recorded this show to an
analog source. Being such a tremendous recording this
individual longed to re-record the master reel straight to
a digital source as they became increasingly popular in the
early 90’s. At this point the intern had moved on and no
longer had this type of access. However, he remembered
periodically that the studio or the station allowed access
to the ‘records room’ for research activity. Posing as a
university affiliate doing research on 70’s radio advertising
this individual gained access to the master reels with a
portable Sony DAT deck. The room was laid out with shelves
with tables on the far end with cassette decks, reel to reel
and ‘cart’ type recorders. Unplugging the cart recorder and
connecting the DAT deck history was then digitized. If you
look at the timeline it was more than likely recorded with a
Sony TCD D3. This early DAT deck was actually graced with a
very nice A to D chip. I believe the same chip found in the
Panasonic SV3700. Therefore a very nice digital transcript
was made that day.

At this time I was working at a mail order facility selling
DAT tapes. Which at the time were very expensive, $12 or more
per tape. The individual with this Bonnie recording told us
the story above. Is it true? Who knows but he use to buy DAT
tapes from us regularly. He made us a cassette of this famous
recording and we bugged him to make us a DAT copy for months.
He did not have the means to do DAT to DAT. On a visit to the
‘store’ in Stamford in 1992 we finally were able to make 1
DAT clone. I subsequently cloned that DAT. Most likely the
clone was made between a Panasonic SV3700 and a Sony 59ES.
But, possibly between 2 SV3700’s. At the ‘shop’ we had so
many DAT decks with many configurations.

I have no doubt this is direct from the Pre-FM Reels and one
listen and you will have no doubt either. Easily one of the
finest recordings by any musician at any time.
