Final day of Jazzfest and fifth day of festival fun. I made the first but again and rode over with mostly the same people. By the time I grabbed food and got set up the Mia Borders had started. She is a local artist I did not know of. Her set was pretty good and it was cool how she brought her kids out to join her. Next up was Dragon Smoke. I
wanted to see this set. The band was Ivan Neville, Eric Lindell and the rhythm section of Galactic and they didn’t disappoint. The third band at the stage was The Radiators. I used to see them often in college but it has been over 30 years since I have seen them. I really enjoyed the set. At this point I decided rather than go to the main stage for
Trombone Shorty I was going to stay for Joe Bonamassa and Bonnie Raitt. I had the perfect spot and was tired and not looking to fight crowds. I am glad I did. Both the Joe Bonamassa and Bonnie Raitt sets were great. I knew I was seeing both in the future which was the
reason to explore. Staying put and seeing Bonnie with both Jon Cleary and Ivan Neville was the way to close the week. Only one screw-up in 5 days and well over 20 sets is what I would consider a success.

Bill Wallace For Supervisor Benefit
(Daytime Show, Minor Crowd Noise)
Performances Also By Jackson Browne & Jim Messina

Bonnie Raitt – Acoustic And Electric Guitars & Vocals
Johnny Lee Schell – Guitar

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was a benefit concert for Bill Wallace for Supervisor of Santa Barbara County and was held in a pasture of a horse ranch in Solvang, CA. The previous night’s show, at the Santa Barbara County Bowl, Bonnie nearly stopped the show because of a photographer in the orchestra pit (who was never found but you can hear security looking for him on the recording.) My friend Rick recorded that one and urged me to use caution while recording this one as it was a daytime show and we were in the front of the crowd and easily visible. (As it was a daytime show I remember Bonnie thanking “The Big Guy on the lights”. Funny.) Bonnie played acoustic to start out and then, when she switched to her electric guitar, she made a comment about hoping that none of the pregnant mares ‘Jumped the gun!’ Someone brought a bouquet of flowers for her up to the stage which led her to get silly and say, “I’d like to thank the academy…” The show also included sets by Jackson Browne and Jim Messina. I’ve never seen another concert there since nor even heard about one advertised. I used a stand-alone EQ to correct the frequency response a bit on this recording. Because the microphones were low to the ground to avoid detection, so I had to boost the high end and scale back the bass a bit. This was my favorite time period for Bonnie Raitt and I really liked her song selection at this show.

June 2024 Notes-
I assembled all the tracks into a one-track file in Audacity to try and clean things up a bit by lowering the crowd applause between songs and amplifying the entire recording. After an evenings work I think it sounds a bit better than the original, but after using digital recorders for so long the tape hiss on the old cassette masters is really noticeable. I guess it was a necessary evil of the time.

OldNeumanntapr Notes: This was Bill Graham’s last big festival that he was working on before he died the previous year. I’m sorry that he never lived to actually see them performed. On the surface it seemed these benefit concerts were held to commemorate the 500-year anniversary of Columbus ‘discovering’ the new world. 1492-1992. Actually, it was more to open people’s eyes to the suffering and misery that the Native American people have endured during that 500-year history. One of the Native American speakers between sets commented, “Why do we celebrate Columbus? He was LOST!!” Santana headlined on Saturday and Bonnie Raitt headlined on Sunday. Saturday was billed as ‘The Good Road Concert” and Sunday was billed as ‘Healing The Sacred Hoop’. I remember that between songs, Bonnie remarked that there were a bunch of young girls trying to get into John Lee Hooker’s dressing room. “That’s what I call ‘Healing The Sacred Hoop'”, she said. They were awesome shows. Some of the sets were kind of quiet and have more crowd noise on the recordings than I would have liked. I’m kind of amazed that there are not more recordings of these shows out there. I recorded both days up on the lawn with Nakamichi CM-300s with CP-2 omni capsules->Sony WM-D6C. The music went on from about 3pm to around midnight, so bringing in enough blank tape was a major problem. Another big problem was that since the shows started so early in the afternoon it was nearly impossible to hide recording equipment in broad daylight. I rode up to the shows with my friends Dave and Brian and it wasn’t until I was putting my equipment together in the back seat of the car that I discovered that I had the CP-2 omni capsules on the mics instead of the CP-1 cardioid caps. I was really upset because the omnis add a lot more crowd noise because they lack the side and real isolation that the cardioids have. I had been recording a band in a bar back home the night before and we did a matrix mix with a feed off of the soundboard plus the two CM-300 omnis that were hung from the ceiling.

I got everything in OK on Saturday but Sunday I had a problem. (This saga became one of my best ever taping stories in the years to come!) Because it was kind of cold at night I had brought extra clothing to both stay warm and conceal equipment. I had taken a long-sleeved flannel shirt and wrapped up the mics and knotted the sleeves together. I hid the D6 and cables and a couple of tapes with an ace bandage wrapped around my crotch and had no other option but to put the mics at the bottom of a backpack with misc. crap on top of it. I looked for a line with a security guy that seemed to be doing a minimum of searching and had Dave and Brian go through the turnstiles ahead of me. At the last second a supervisor took over my line just as I stepped up to the search. My heart kind of did a double beat but I hoped for the best. I always relied on the old magician’s sleight-of-hand trick of showing them what you wanted them to see while at the same time distracting them from what you wanted to hide. While my friends went through the turnstiles the supervisor was rummaging around in my bag and felt the mics wrapped up in the shirt. “What’s This?,” he wanted to know and stopped the line. I had to think fast as he was trying but could not untie the knots on the shirt. “It’s a beer bottle,” says I, after the other guy had already torn my ticket. He pulled me out of line and, yelled at me, “You can’t bring that in here!” I stepped out of line and said that I’d get rid of it. Meanwhile, Dave looked back and saw what was going on. I put my hand up in the air palm up and he tossed the car keys to me over the top of the turnstiles. I went back to his car, opened the trunk, and took out two blank cassettes from under my ace bandage and left them in the car. I unwrapped the mics and shoved them down next to the tape deck under the ace bandage and hoped for better luck! When I went back, I picked a different line and got through without a problem. The usher at the gate did a double take when he saw that the ticket had been torn already and then signed off on the back by the supervisor. He asked me about it and I said, with my best ‘dumb-guy’ look, that they had found a beer bottle on me and made me go and get rid of it. What did he say? You guessed it! “You can’t bring that in here!!!!” Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Dave found me inside as I was making my way to the lawn and asked me about it as I gave him back his keys. I told him I had to lighten the load a bit and had to leave some tape behind. “I guess I just won’t tape Don Henley,” I said. “Oh you’ve Got to tape Henley,” he said. Later on, about 5 minutes before Henley came on stage, I looked up to see Dave drop two blank tapes in my lap. “How in the hell did you get Those??” I asked. He said that he had gotten cold and asked the people at the gate if he could go out and get his sweatshirt! Naturally, he had another thought in mind as well. I laughed and shook my head. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it! That’s the closest I’ve ever come to getting caught taping.

Once night fell, I could get the mics up higher and make a better recording, but in broad daylight I had no other choice but to sit on the ground under the repeater towers and build a little pile of clothing on top of my backpack. I hid the mics in the sleeves on the shirt and ran the mic cables back to the backpack where the D6 was. I need to transfer these cassettes to CDR. Some will sound better than others.

The music was pretty good. I couldn’t see much of the stage, especially in the daytime, because the view screens were not on. I remember that the Hooker / Cooder set and the Lindley / Cooder set was kind of quiet. Those sets have more crowd noise on them, plus the omni caps sure didn’t help matters. It would have been nice to have the shotguns but they are a little noticeable!

ONT Notes-
I hadn’t seen Bonnie since 2002, at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. She’s as good as ever and is definitely one of my all time favorite slide guitar players. The weather in Avila Beach was beautiful, with a slight breeze in the air. The wool cap makes for a good windscreen, but there were occasional gusts that can be heard. The Blues Festival is at the Avila Beach Resort Golf Course and is right next to the ocean. It’s really a beautiful setting. At one point Bonnie remarked, I can’t believe there are whales right over there. Have they gone yet?.’ (I saw/recorded Bonnie the last time she played in Avila Beach, in 1996 for the Walter Capps For Congress Benefit with Jackson Browne, Don Henley, And John Trudell.) I got my ticket to the festival at the last minute, as there are three people who are higher in the pecking order. Fortunately for me, not for them, two couldn’t make it. One was in the hospital with a kidney stone and one was home with a bad back. I had to scrounge for 9 volts before I left the house, not having time to stop to buy new ones, and ended up using previously used batteries from other recordings. I noticed that, a little over 30 minutes into the Bonnie set, the red light on the MV-100 preamp was on, indicating low voltage. I made a battery swap between songs, and fortunately, no music was lost, just a bit of on-stage dialog.

Opened For The Grateful Dead

OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was an Incredible set! I heard a rumor in line that Bonnie would be opening. She was on fire, and was at the top of her game in ’89 with a hot new comeback CD, ‘Nick Of Time.’ I remember that she was stoked to be onstage with the Dead, and commented to the deadheads at the beginning of the set, “If you’re as ready as you smell, you’re happenin!” I was in the second row of the tapers section with my buddy Gene’s Sony TCD-D10 DAT and Nakamichi CM-300 shotguns. 25 years later I am Still sick that I didn’t have an extra DAT blank and battery for the D10 for her set. I recorded it with my D6 but the D10 would have done such a better job. I find that, over the years, it is Bonnie’s set that I listen to far more than the Dead’s set from this night. I’ve seen Bonnie a number of times since this show but I’ve never heard one of her sets that had the intensity that this one had.

-Missing first song ìUnder The Falling Skyî

Hereís a truly outstanding item from the JEMS archive: a nearly flawless 55-minute, unedited pre-FM stereo capture of Bonnie Raitt playing the venerable New Orleans Jazz Fest in 1977. Itís a spirited festival set featuring rare tracks, plenty of sassy Bonnie banter and a guest appearance by Allen Toussiant.

It was transferred from a vintage 10î reel that came from a radio station archive. I donít know definitively this was ever broadcast as there seem to be no off-air recordings of the show in circulation (though my understanding is that the festival was broadcast in this era with much of it appearing on the exceptional, sadly missed, NPR series ëJazz Aliveí). But the mix is clearly meant for broadcast, as, unlike a true soundboard, the audience is mixed in between tracks. Samples provided.

There is a circulating audience recording available of Bonnieís set taped by legendary southeast taper ëFreezerí best known for his 1970ís Southeastern United States audience captures of many of the biggest bands of the era.
The available audience tape indicates the Pre-FM capture is missing the first song, we assume the reel was not ready or was damaged at the start. We pick up the set before the second song begins.

Thanks to mjk5510 for the research and detailed post production work.

If youíre a Bonnie fan at any level, casual or hardcore, I would consider this recording as a must have.
