A little more than a month before the show I emailed Billy Maddox, Paul Thorn’s FOH sound engineer and asked about audio recording. I was told that Paul Thorn allows audience, but not soundboard recording. I arrived at soundcheck, about 5 pm, and received permission to hang my Neumanns. Billy asked me if I could send him the recording after the show before it was uploaded, and I said sure. He emailed me that he was amazed with the clarity of the recording and also of the accurate stereo separation. He thanked me and said that the recording would help him to better mix the band live. This was the first time that I have seen Paul Thorn and I thought he put on a really great show. I particularly liked the songs ‘Burn Down The Trailer Park’ and ‘Long Way From Tupelo’. I met Paul after the show, thanked him for allowing live recording, and told him that my friend Brad Foster, also from Tupelo MS, works in the same bank where Paul’s sister Deborah works.

Taper Notes-
This was the first matrix recording I attempted to make at SLO Brew. Thanks to Bill Gaines for the loan of the Mackie mixer and the 35 ft XLR cables. Thankfully I was able to monitor the mix correctly because of the mixer’s decent headphone amp along with my closed Beyer 770 headphones. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to set the balance between the soundboard and audience sources correctly. (I didn’t have the option of using a multitrack recorder.) I wanted the Neumanns to add just enough audience noise and stage fill to blend nicely with the board to give a nice ‘live’ sound. I think it sounds pretty decent, though there is a glitch or two in the first song that I think happened when Kip was adjusting the house mix.

I had heard that Dave Alvin was really accessible and friendly. I thought it was funny that when I asked him about recording, he said, ‘Sure, as long as we don’t suck.’ I said, ‘Hey, you guys are great. You Never suck.’ He and Phil were sitting in one of the side booths stringing their guitars.

I knew that Dave Alvin’s guitar would be really loud on stage, so I asked Kip if he could turn it up a bit in my mix. This worked out really well for Mother Hips in November.

I was happy with the matrix, though it is a lot more work than just plugging into the board. You can really notice it when the performer says something on stage and the audience reacts to it, like when Dave said ..’ a menthol ciga……’ and someone in the audience cried out ‘cigarette!’ It really gives you the sense of being there.

My friend Dave, who has been to mammoth amounts of shows since the early 70s, has been seeing Dave Alvin for years. When we talked with the band in the alley, when Dave was getting his LP signed, he mentioned the Blasters at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara in the early 80s. (That show was a disaster. The crowds trashed the place and the band did little to stop it.) Dave Alvin cringed and said, ‘yeah, we were responsible for bringing rock music to a halt there for many years’.

My friend Dave said that he was on stage that night, and I asked him if he was shooting. (He used to be a photographer for some of the clubs, like the Spirit in SLO.) Dave said no, and Dave Alvin laughed and said it was a good thing, because the photos could have been used against them in court!.

We went to Taco Bell after the show and after we ordered, Dave turned to me and said, ‘Look who is in line.’ Yep. It was Dave and Phil Alvin. We talked with them a bit more and when they left, Dave told me about the only other time that he has ever seen the performers at a restaurant after the show. He said it was the night of the Blondie / Kinks show at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium in July of 1978.

SLO Brew is a nice intimate club and is a great place to see and record a show such as this.

My friend Brad Foster in Mississippi asked me if I would record this show and I’m really glad that I did because these guys really cook. After recently recording The Brothers Comatose at SLO Brew it was nice to get to see / record another smokin’ bluegrass band. I would have liked to try another matrix, but these guys didn’t allow board access.

I got to SLO Brew at 6 pm in time for sound check and met up with Drew, the Stingdusters soundman, who gave me permission to hang my Neumanns and set up for the recording. They had brought in their own mixing board and were set up toward the center of the room. Drew had his microphones on a stand next to his board. They were about 15 feet back from where I had hung the Neumanns from the front ceiling post.

This turned out to be a really late night for me. The doors were at 8pm and the band’s first set didn’t start until 9pm, with the second set running from 10:15 to 11:40pm. After tearing down my gear I didn’t get out of SLO Brew until midnight, and then there was still a 40 minute drive home. Yawn. I had to be at work at 8am the next morning too! It was worth not getting much sleep because I was able to come away with another great recording.

I brought my camera this time and shot some pretty good photos of the band. As some of you know, in a ‘past life’ I was a print-news photographer for a couple of different county newspapers. My Nikon lenses are all manual focus, and sometimes, especially in low light, my nearly 50-year-old eyes don’t always focus correctly. 😉 These were shot with a Nikon D300 and 24mm f/2.0 AI manual focus Nikkor wide angle and 85 mm f/1.4 AIS manual focus Nikkor telephoto lenses. ISO ranged from 1600 to 2500. I used one of my photos (w/the 24 mm f/2.0 AIS) for the front cover artwork.

Got there at 5 PM, for soundcheck. Kip was home sick but no problem getting access from Reggie, the Bastards sound man, since I had emailed him. I hung mics, ran cables and taped them down. I was able to record most of the soundcheck and dial in the mix. I’d say off hand it was a 55/45% split. I had Reggie bus the guitars in my mix so that he could raise their levels for me. I monitored the whole night with my Beyer DT-770s and it seemed to sound nice. Of course, it’s impossible to get a really accurate appraisal with all the loud ambient noise. I’m getting used to setting up the Mackie mixer and listening to both sources independently while they sound check. The Neumanns mix well with the board. 🙂 It makes it nice to get to record the soundcheck to dial everything in. I was going to record the opener, but they were horrible, so I just monitored and made sure that my mix sounded good. I wasn’t able to get a set list after the show, because the Mongrel Hordes made off with them. Reggie said to email him and he’d send me one. I also noticed that, right before the show, the bouncers came in and set up a short wall to block off the stage floor from the bar, because it was an all-ages show. I couldn’t remove the mic cables after the show because the wall was on top of them. Fortunately, there is a diamond-plate metal covering that gives access to the basement that sticks up an eighth of an inch, and I had ran the cables alongside it, so at least they weren’t being smashed. Doubtless that Bill wouldn’t like that…But, I talked with the manager and received permission to leave the cables set up for the next show, this coming Thursday when Cuesta Ridge opens for Brothers Comatose. There’s a little work that I won’t have to redo. 🙂 All I did was remove the microphones and left the shelf and Atlas bar strapped to the post. The guy at the booth next to the board bought me two beers after I let him listen to my headphone mix a bit. All in all, a very enjoyable evening. The band was in fine form and played a lot off their new CD, which Erika said will be out on June 9th, two days before her birthday.

This is JUST the second set!

When I got home from taping Tom Russell at the Fremont Theater in SLO tonight and popped the CF card into my iMac I noticed that the first set came up as ‘zero bytes’. There was nothing there. I checked levels a couple of times during the set and everything looked great. The recorder was running, and it didn’t get left on pause. (The red record light was a constant red.) I even tried playing the file on the Tascam. It errors when I try to play that file.

Set two is fine. I shut off the recorder during the intermission to save battery power. I did a ‘full format’ on the card yesterday before the show. I had some trouble during the Bonnie Raitt set of the recent Avila Blues Festival where there were a couple of places on the recording that sounded like a CD skipping. I thought that maybe the card was getting used too much with only ‘quick formats’ being done between shows.

I’ve noticed that for the past year or so the recorder refuses to turn off when you press the power button when the recorder is running off of battery power. So to turn it off I have to remove the card first and then it will power down. That’s what I did between sets tonight. Something must have happened during the power down cycle which erased the first set. Or, it never recorded in the first place. I don’t understand. It’s all very strange.

It’s never done anything like this before.

It was a good show. The first set was all new material from the new release, and he ended the first set with ‘Tonight We Ride’.

This is most distressing.

All I can say is that this band seriously needs someone to stand near the stage with a fire extinguisher because THESE GUYS SMOKE!!!! Wow. I really enjoyed seeing / recording this band, especially after hearing repeated plays of ‘Pie For Breakfast’ on K-Pig FM, from Santa Cruz but simulcast in SLO County. To make matters sweeter, Cuesta Ridge was opening the show and I am the archivist for that band since my brother in law Brent plays drums for them. Well, I’d probably go and record them anyway even if he wasn’t because they are really hot. Brent put me on the guest list for this show which was nice that I could save a few dollars.

I got there at 6 pm at soundcheck and had no trouble securing permission from the headliner to make an audience / soundboard matrix recording. It made things easy seeing how my mic cables were already taped down because I had to leave them set up after the Heartless Bastards show on Sunday after the bouncers set up the general admission wall over them that separates the bar from the stage area. So, I just attached the microphones to the cables and adjusted them in a basic ORTF position but made sure to point them to the stage to pick up sound from the on-stage amplifiers. I was ready to record the sound check and adjust my mix once I got the mixer and recorder / preamp set up and the 1/4 inch cables run from the board. I asked Kip, SLO Brew house sound man, if I could plug into Matrix 3 and 4 on the board and he commented that I was getting used to doing so!

The Brothers Comatose played a 40 minute sound check which was like a mini set and was icing on the cake to what looked to be a pretty good evening shaping up. They sound checked for so long that by the time Cuesta Ridge was ready to do their sound check the doors were opening and people were coming in to the building.

Cuesta Ridge played a little over 40 minutes and were in fine form. Their set, along with all their others, can be found on the Live Music Archive. Look up:

The addition of the audience microphones, which were hung on the front ceiling post about 10ft high and nine feet from stage center, makes a big difference in the energy level of the show. You can really hear how into it the crowd was, as compared to a straight board recording where the crowd sounds like they are off in the distance.

My sister was there and bought me a couple of cold Coronas, Thanks Steph!, and the guys at the booth next to me bought me another beer and thanked me for recording live music. I told them thanks, and that I have been recording for almost 29 years now.

Pie For Breakfast was the third song of the set and was really nice to hear live.
I will definitely see and record these guys again because they put on a great show.
During the encore I was able to make my way through the crowd (which was packed) to the front of the stage to get a set list once the show was over. The guy next to me gave me a dirty look when I pushed up to the stage but I smiled as I grabbed the set list and said that I needed it to be able to post the recording to the LMA. He said, ‘OK, go ahead’.

Another show successfully archived. In the words of another taper, ‘If it wasn’t recorded it’s just a memory’. Enjoy all.

I love Carolyn Wonderland. This was a great show and would have been a lot better recording if my levels hadn’t of been so high. I preset them in the car but the knob must have been bumped in the bag because when I got back to the car I noticed that the recorder was on 7 which is way too high, especially for being up front. Even after Dennis’s post production work there is still a hint of distortion on this, which bothers me because it could have been better if I just would have prevented the levels from getting too high. I really enjoyed Shelley King, who played acoustic guitar with Carolyn’s band, and also played solo acoustic to open the show with a couple of songs. She was pretty, had long brown hair and a big butt, PLUS was a pretty good singer and guitarist. What more could you want? 🙂
Carolyn plays a wicked blues guitar and really shines on lap steel. She alternated between guitar and trumpet for the Los Lobos song Cumbia Raza, and did a stellar job. I really kicked myself because if the levels were lower this could have been an A+ recording. It’s so hard to see the damn levels on the recorder in my hip pack at a stand-up show. I can’t bend my head down enough to check levels because it can pull the capsules loose from the hat. That actually happened early in the set, and I had to reinstall the mics, so I just decided to leave the deck alone. I had thought I set them conservatively enough, but didn’t realize that they were so high. I’m getting too old for these stand up shows anyway. My back really hurts afterward. I guess that’s why I’m the Old… Neumanntapr. 😉
Thanks to Dennis Orr for salvaging this recording. It’s not perfect but it’s better than it was. I shudder to think what it would have ended up sounding like if I tried to fix it. 😉

This was a great show. Originally I wasn’t planning on going, but my friend Jack wanted me to record
it so he bought me the ticket. I’m glad I went. My friend Dave and I were the first two people in line,
almost an hour before doors opened, but at the last minute two other, older, people cut in line and
went in first. One of them tried to steal a stool from the front cocktail table that Dave snagged and
I had to put a stop to it.
There were only about 100 people at the show. When doors opened I counted nine people in line, not
counting the two gate crashers. It was a small intimate crowd, and no one went up close to the stage
until the encores, so I had a completely unobstructed view to both the stage and the PA. I recorded
from the front cocktail table, about 12 feet from stage right, and about four feet to the right of the
front center ceiling post which is where I hang my Neumanns from for open-taping shows.
I really enjoyed Kim Simmond’s soulful blues playing. He played a cherry top Les Paul and an acoustic
guitar as well. The bass player played a stand up electric bass, plus a normal bass guitar.
I had never seen them before, while Dave told me that the last time he saw them was when they were
middle billed under Quicksilver Messenger Service at Cal Poly in SLO more than 40 years ago.
This was the second show I recorded in two days, the night before being Dave and Phil Alvin which was
also at SLO Brew.
