Ten Years of Bootlegs #5: Bob Dylan & Mark Knopfler – The Complete Recording Sessions

June slipped by and half of July before I realized I’d missed posting this. These posts have been fascinating for me to write and then watch as the blog changes. I’ve noted before that I don’t really pay a lot of attention to my counter stats and the like, but doing this list has made me look at some of the numbers at least. It has been amazing to watch how whenever I write one of these anniversary posts and link back to an original post that original post then explodes in terms of hit count. After a couple of months, I made a text file listing the TOP Ten shows because the numbers were changing too much.

The numbers are changing on shows I haven’t talked about, too.

The fifth most downloaded bootlegs of all time:

Lossless Bootleg Bonanza: Bob Dylan & Mark Knopfler – The Complete Recording Sessions 1979-1986
Total number of hits: 3254

When I made my text file this show had 2874 hits. In the last few months, it has received an additional 380 hits all on its own. Obviously, that’s not a huge number but considering I originally posted that show back in 2015 and blogs are all about the new I think that’s pretty cool.

I’m actually not a huge expert on this period of Dylan’s career (compared to some of you I’m not an expert on any part of Dylan’s career). Which means I don’t have a whole lot to say about this bootleg. Mark Knopfler has played on a few of Dylan’s albums and played with him on tour. This boot collects some of the b-sides for Infidels, plus tour rehearsals and a couple of live songs. It’s a pretty eclectic mix, but an interesting one, especially for fans of Knopfler’s work.

Here at the other Ten Years of Bootlegs posts.

The source info, according to Ted: The Museum of TV & Radio in NYC dubbed his original reel-to-reel tape and a friend converted it to CDR.

Or, in more detailed fashion:

museum of tv & radio in nyc dubbed the original reel
to reel on to cassette for their listening archives
(museum of tv & radio in beverly hills also gets
copies).

a friend converted it to cdr also from the original
reel to reel (lost touch with him and never knew how
he converted analog to digital)

i recorded it at the kppc-fm 106.7 radio studio (at 99
south chester in pasadena, california near cal tech)
during the live broadcast on a scully tape deck (at
7.5 ips on quarter inch two track stereo 1.5 mil
acetate scotch audio tape); when the nrps song
louisiana lady was played on the scully tape deck in
the radio studio during the interview, the scotch
audio tape was moved to a similar scully tape deck in
the kppc-fm production studio down the hall to
continue taping the live broadcast; music played from
lps on turntables was scoped by stopping the tape
during the broadcast to make sure that the entire
interview would fit on our only blank tape available
at the time on a sunday afternoon.

peace, ted

From the original uploader:
What a great way to start my 2014 concerts. Sting I have seen multiple times but had never gone to
see Paul Simon even though I had wanted to, it just hadn’t worked out. 2hours and 4o minutes of great
music was the treat we all got.. The volume was not very loud so unfortunetly you hear the crowd noise more than I would have
liked, but what can you do.

Geetarz Comments:

The 1988 Tour celebrated Clapton’s 25th Anniversary in the music
business, and coincided with the resurgence of classic roots rock
and blues in the public eye. The tour was received warmly, and the
crowd in Phildelphia was off the hook, which really took the energy
level of the band up a notch as well.

Sourced from a low generation copy of a pro-shot Video in wide
circulation among collectors – then remastered by the 3BR team.

Great, crisp soundboard recording. The mix, in particular, is very
up-front and close-miked.

IMO, this is superior to the Tarantura release “Vivela Slowhand”,
which apears to have been sourced from a lower quality, higher-
generation source and suffers from a bit of VHS tracking noise.
