Neil Young & The Trans Band – Europe 1982

In 1982 Neil Young switched record labels, leaving Reprise which he had been with since the beginning to sign with the relatively new Geffen Records. The first record he released was Trans, an album so screwy his label sued him for trying to sabotage his own career. He used a vocoder on half the tracks making his voice unintelligible. Anyway, you all probably know more about this stuff than I do. This is where I admit I don’t know the full history of Neil’s storied career as much as I’d like.

He took the Trans Band (which I believe was mostly just Crazy Horse under a different name) out on tour through Europe in the fall of 1982. I had fun collecting the tour and you might have noticed that I’ve been posting those shows for the last few weeks. I think I have at least one source from every show except 09/21 Rotterdam. If anyone has that in lossless quality please send it my way. If you have alternate sources for any shows I’ll take them too.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this tour. It seems like people think it is a good one. Here’s where I admit I haven’t really listened to any of them yet. Been too busy with other stuff.

Master – Audience recording from my old Maxell XL II Tapes

My Artwork is included !!

This concert I taped with an old AIWA walkman and an extra stereo-microphone
(I can’t remember what exact equipment I used those days), but what I do remember
that it was my first concert I taped with that equipment. (..and that there was
another guy standing diredctly beneath me also taping.
A long time friend of mine since then!!)

The sound quality is very good. This is a real and typical open air-recording
with many people around my microphone talking and shouting (specially
on these loud numbers like “Birds”).
I recorded it in the middle of the audience about 25 meters from the stage on the left side.

This was my very first ever Neil Young in concert-experience in a long row.
..and for me it started with the worst.
I saw him so many times afterwards, but this here wasn’t a real good start.
As I listened to it after many years I thought: oh, great start, but after half that
concert it’s getting boring: so many bad songs, for example “Like an Inca” is way too
long – played here that evening with that band. I would love to hear it with the Horse,
could be there for 60 minutes, but not that version you will listen to here. And
the Hurricane is just a quick played simple Hurricane played for the about 50.000 people
on the field.
Anyway, as this is from my master. it’s worth a download and put it in your collection.

Trying to make Luca less desperate, here’s a show he’s searching for.
This was the first concert of this 1982 European tour, apparently on a rainny day.

Unfortunately, it’s not complete; the taper traded probably only a 90 minutes cassette and
3 songs are missing (Hurricane, Cinnamon girl and Hey hey, my my).
Other flaws: Like an inca is 2 times cutted and the end of Mr soul is missing.
That’s the way i got it …

My tape is probably from 2d generation.
Quality: check samples; no subjective eq made.

A pic of the show is added (i remember i saw a short sequence of the begining of the tour on TV news and at the moment Neil still had long hair).

TDK SA Cassette played on a Marrantz SD4051 deck with pitch adjustment; zoom H4 for wave files; PC;
audacity for tracking; FLAC.

I found this in my basement, looking for some stuff to save on cd’s and I thought may be someone would
like to listen to this one.
The set list is usual but the show is a little bit longer than others.
As long as i remember, 1st gen tapes were lended by my old friend XP and i made equalized copies.
Seems the show is recorded near to the speakers and the sound is very correct after the first song.
The concert features an extended like an inca version.
Thanks to the taper.
