The respected Dylanologist, John Bauldie, called this the Horrible Tour.

What is true is that most of it was played at open air festivals to audiences
where a large portion of the crowd are there to see some other act and may have little knowledge or interest in Bob.

It is also true that the songs played were heavily drawn from the better-known songs from the 1960s and 1970s.

It is not true that all these concerts were the same – of the nine concerts and 50 different songs played,
27 of those were only played once or twice.

Festivals have practical limitations – apart from indifferent audiences, performers often have to deal with poorer sound,
shorter allocated setup and playing time, promoter’s demands, drunks, drugs, rain & mud, etc, etc.

Bob was not a stranger to outdoor concerts in 1990 – this is the guy who played the Isle of Wight in 69,
& one of his all-time classic concerts at Blackbushe in 78.

For whatever reason, Bob put the emphasis on his great & best-known songs from the 1960s & 1970s.

So let’s get back to Bauldie. Yes, it is a greatest hits tour leg & it is hugely different
from the mega-successful Paris & London concert hall appearances from early in the year,
but if you are objective about the performances, they are certainly not bad or poor concerts, just different.

Just look at it this way – in the 19th century, Leo Tolstoy wrote a massive novel called War And Peace,
mainly in Russian, but also with large portions in French. It is a sort of philosophical adventure drawing on large chucks of history & poetry.
It is still regarded as one of the greatest novels written by anybody at any time, but most people have never read it because it is too long & too complicated.
In Russia today, it has been condensed into about a hundred pages for schoolkids so they can get some understanding of what it has to say.
Full-on Leo & Bob have much in common, particularly being wordy, philosophical & impenetrable to many.

That is how you need to approach the 1990 European festivals – it is Dylan 101 to get the kids interested. There is nothing wrong with that. Look at the competition at Torhout-Werchter: The Cure, Midnight Oil, Sinead O’Conner, Wendy & Liza, Ry Cooder, Lenny Kravitz, Jeff Healey Band.
Bob was reaching out to a younger, new audience, not a hall full of aging London lambchops – why not!

& remember, Bob had just completed Under The Red Sky, with its heavy emphasis on simple nursery-rhyme forms.

The standout concert here is Berlin, which is provided complete.
Therefore three songs (I Shall Be Released, It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding), & Maggie’s Farm) are duplicated.
The better versions (according to PP) are the non-Berlin tracks.

All concerts, except Torhout, are represented. Torhout is the worst concert. All songs that were played on the tour leg appear here.

We are not dealing with armies of hardcore lambchops here who know all the songs & crave the unexpected & obscure.

If you are objective about it, these are perfectly respectible performances by a very well-rehearsed band & these tapes are all in excellent sound.

Bauldie, in my opinion, was wrong. If you want the sophisticated stuff from 1990, go listen to Paris & London.

Put your gumboots on, have a couple of beers, make some noise, have some fun & listen.

Horrible it is not, & rubbish it is not either.

The setlists were highly variable from night to night, with 13 songs being played five or more times, and
27 songs only played once or twice.

It is interesting that most of the songs were well-known 1960s and 1970s standards,
with only three songs from Oh Mercy.

Under The Red Sky had been recorded but was as yet unreleased.

during the summer tour due to the time allocated to each band during this festival.
There was also a rumour that Dylan was not allowed to play more than one hour before the encores,

This is an interesting tour leg for the Never Ending Tour. GE Smith was exiting the band,
but presumably because of contractual commitments & lack of a suitable replacement, continued to play until October 1990.

Bob decided he would play a series of live auditions with various guitarists supplementing GE Smith:
John Staeheley (13,15,18 August),
Steve Bruton (19-29 August),
Miles Joseph (31 August 31-3 September),
Steve Ripley (4-9 September), and
Cesar Diaz (11-12 September) were all given this trial.

According to Cesar Diaz, Bob’s guitar & amp technician (& occasional guitar player), these weren’t the only ones auditioned. There were auditions at the rehearsals prior to the late summer tour & then again after it prior to the North American fall tour.

John Staeheley & Cesar Diaz eventually were the winners from this very public & messy gunfight & played the 1990 Fall Tour together.

There is a theory that Bob’s problems in 1991 were the result of GE’s departure & the inability to find a suitable replacement. There was nothing wrong with the auditioned guitar players – the problems lay elsewhere. The tapes prove it.

The 1990 late summer tour tapes vary from poor to excellent with sound quality. However, the best versions of each song give a very interesting collection. Unfortunately, most (but not all) of the Steve Ripley auditions are in poor sound.

The transition points in Bob’s career are always interesting & this is no exception – you will be surprised.

I also don’t doubt that Bob was drinking heavily at the time – there are just too many eye-witness accounts that this was so. However, this tour leg (& the 90 Fall Tour which followed) offer perfectly coherent & well executed songs without the slurred & forgotten lyrics, nasal whine & general disinterest of early 1991.

You haven’t seen it yet, but the 1990 Fall Tour Pink Panther is a real gem. Neither Bob nor the band fell apart musically in late-1990, despite all the stories.

PS – the two Edmonton concerts that begin this compilation are in poor sound, but the performances are wonderful.

There were like seven people [auditioning for Smith’s place].
We were out in somewhere like Tulsa, or Texas, and that’s where we were having the auditions,
and then they went on the road with us. Every once in a while a new guy would come in.
One of the guys asked Bob for an autograph right after he auditioned for Bob. He blew it. Only one of them came back, [John Staeheley].
I saw him drink a pint of Jack Daniel’s backstage before a gig, ’cause he was so nervous.
Steve Bruton flew in his wife, thinking he was starting the shows at the Beacon Theater, and Bob just blew him off.

Taper notes:
For BARN211, I’m bringing things back to one of my favorite all-time musicians and live performers — Van Morrison. While I have previously posted my all-time favorite show of his as BARN166 way back in 2015 (nearly 5 years back), I figured it was time for me to put out another one. This one represents the first time I ever saw him perform live — at my local amphitheater at the time — the Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ. At the time I wasn’t really prepared for what I was about to witness — Van is one of those performers who reinterprets his music as he sees fit, and the fans can’t come to a show expecting to hear music as it was recorded on the album.

In this timeframe, Van’s show was a bit more jazzy, and you could expect jazzier interpretations of his songs. He didn’t perform any of his “hits” (other than “Gloria” — his hit from 1964 when he was in the band Them, in the encore), and a 4 songs in the setlist (“Whenever God Shines His Light”, “These Are The Days”, “Orangefield”, “Have I Told You Lately”) are from his then-current album “Avalon Sunset” — and “Have I Told You Lately” would go on to become a big hit for Rod Stewart when he covered it a few years later. The rest are pulled from all corners of his catalog, but his genius is in evidence here during a magical 11+ minute version of “Sweet Thing” from his classic album Astral Weeks and a sublime nearly 9 minute version of “Summertime In England” (from his semi-obscure 1980 “Common One” album), representing 20 minutes of the back half of the set — both notable because every other song falls squarely in the 2-4 minute range. “Star Of The County Down” (which has a totally different sound and feel from the rest of the show) comes from his 1988 album of traditional Irish folk songs recorded with The Chieftans.

This version of his band was anchored by the presence of organist (and vocalist) Georgie Fame, and the format of all of his shows at the time was that Georgie and the rest of the band would be the “warm up” act for Van, performing a few songs without Van to warm up the crowd and the band (Georgie hilarously comments at the end of his set “That’s the warm-up and it obviously had no effect at all!”), and then inviting Van on stage. Those 3 “opening act” songs are presented here at the beginning of the recording. One of opening songs — “Yeh Yeh” was a top-10 hit in England for Georgie in 1964. You’ll hear Georgie’s voice featured promintently on this recording harmonizing and backing Van throughout.

It’s very interesting to note that it’s clear that Van didn’t work from a setlist — if you listen closely you can actually hear him calling out each and every song to the band as the previous song is finishing.

One more interesting note about this show — I did a little Googling of the bassist from this show – Brian Odgers, who was not typically one of Van’s bassists that I’d heard of before, played with Van only in the years 1989-1990 (by 1991 he had Nicky Scott playing bass, and he played with Van straight through 1999 and then again in 2002 and 2004). Anyway, Brian has a storied bass-playing career — to start off, he played on Elton John’s “Madman Across The Water” in 1971; he also played on Lou Reed’s self-titled 1972 album, Roger Daltry’s 1977 album “One Of The Boys”, and John McLaughlin’s 1969 album “Extrapolation” before joining Van around this time to tour and record Enlightenment.

The source of this recording is an old cassette of mine, with an inferior clip-on mic and I’ve spent a couple of weeks giving it a polish with a proper transfer, meticulously scrubbing out over 300 claps/yells/whistles (and even some bursts of onstage feedback), smoothing out some volume inconsistencies on the master tape, and a nice EQ. This is a massive upgrade over my original recording, and this is my first attempt to circulate my 30 year old master.
