This is a new transfer from cassette of the tape we have all come to love. The sloppiness, the arguing (“Dave, why did you stop?” “I didn’t stop, Nick did” “Well why did he stop” “I don’t know why he stopped, ask him” “We must never stop”), the technical SNAFUs (“I can’t hear any piano in my cans” “James there’s no click track in the cans”). How can you not love this tape?
The reason for the new transfer is that the version available on Roio CD is a single CD that clocks in at 78 minutes. This is from a cassette that was full up. After speed correction this version runs 90:17. I think all that qas cut is some of the 2 spots where the TV goe on for a few minutes, but I though I’d offer a complete version for whomever might want it. I know everyone out there is a completest freak, so here you go.
There was a hell of a lot of noise on this tape, some stemming from the original master being a normal bias cassette, most from however many generations of tape this went through before getting to me. I used noise reduction on this, but tried to be careful. Didn’t take it all off, because it really hurt the music. There are a few artifacts from the NR, but I personally can deal with them better than that wall of hiss (no pun intended). There is an unusual squeak in the background of side 1 of the tape, kind of a tone running through the thing, that I couldn’t remove, because it is not consistent. Starts off at the beginning as one note, and by the end its several notes lower. If it were consistently one note I could use a notch filter to get rid of it, but its not, so it stayed. Also, sector boundaries on this set are NOT fixed, because this runs too long for a CD. If you want to burn it it will have to be made into 2 CDs and SBE’s fixed for each. You’re on your own.
Thanks to Quentin1840 yet again for the source tape. Perhaps you can put some towels in that closet pretty soon.

Hi Stones fanatics,

this is a brand new upgrade. This time i went to the best available (to me) source files. So it is a completely new remaster, made from different source files.
I have done phase, level and pitch correction. In the end i made a new EQ. Also have changed the version of “Wild Horses”, on disc 1 (track 20), with another one.”Exile On Main Street Blues” is now also from unedited, longer version.
Also, SBE were fixed with TLH.
After working on this upgrade i was inspired to make another double disc, from the golden era 1968 – 1972. So Vol. 2 will follow soon.

The History
In the summer of 1969 Michelangelo Antonioni completed the filming of his visionary and prophetic view of America and our society. All that was left was to complete the movie with a good soundtrack. Antonioni was interested in everything that was new and trendy among young people. Don Hall was on the air during his nocturnal DJ program on KPPC FM Pasadena when he was contacted personally by Antonioni at the end of the summer of 1969. Antonioni really liked Don and invited him to have some screenings of the movie. After that Don provided a list of songs he felt would work, most coming from his program. Antonioni asked MGM to hire Don as Music Advisor for the soundtrack and came back to Roma (Don still has a letter from Antonioni, sent from Rome with the list of the songs he’d like to be in the movie, all songs for the radio-desert sequences).

Still they had to find how to score all the main sequences: Beginning, Violent, Take Off, Love and Explosions sequences (and eventually more). Antonioni wanted original music for those sequences. Many artists and bands were contacted to write original music for the movie, but none of them was asked to write the whole soundtrack of the movie.

In October ’69 Don was in Rome with Antonioni trying to find a way to score the whole movie in time for Christmas. Near the end of the month it happened that Clare Peploe (cowriter of the movie and Antonioni’s girlfriend at the time) brought to Rome a brand new copy of the new Pink Floyd album, Ummagumma, from London. Antonioni, Don Hall and Clare listened to the new album with a small stereo at Antonioni’s house in Rome. Antonioni REALLY liked Ummagumma and listened several times to the whole album. He liked ìCareful With That Axe, Eugeneî very much and told Don that he’d like a new version for the final sequence of Zabriskie Point. They decided to try and hire Pink Floyd to record all the original music they needed for the movie. MGM contacted Pink Floyd. After that Steve O’Rourke came to Rome alone during the first days of November ’69 to check and organize it all. All was done in few days, and Pink Floyd came on the 15th of November with Pete Watts and Alan Stiles, cancelling some shows planned for their present tour. Antonioni and Don showed the movie to them several times with some scenes already scored, highlighting those without. At that point Steve and Roger Waters had a talk and asked Antonioni to try to score the whole movie. He, been enthusiastic about Ummagumma, agreed.

Pink Floyd produced a large quantity of music, especially for the Love Scene but Antonioni was not satisfied and the sessions ran longer than planned. In the end Pink Floyd went back to London with some songs to finish. Out of all the entire production of songs, including themes and variations, Antonioni ended up using only three songs. He kept on searching for “something better” till the last days before the premiere of the movie. In London Pink Floyd completed their final versions of eight songs with the intent of them being their eventual album for the Zabriskie Point soundtrack.

Observations:

As usual, the info was taken from Nico Zentgraf ( http://www.nzentgraf.de/books/tcw/works1.htm ), not from the backcover of the CD, which by the way, is not 100% accurate:

  1. Tracks 1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 13, 14, 15 were not recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich, April 1974 like the backcover said, and some sites repeated,
    http://www.stonesvikingrob.com/bootleg/i/its_only_goats_head_soup.htm and http://www.bootlegarchive.com/media_description.asp?MediaID=37430
  2. On April 1974, the Stones were in England (Newbury & London), not in Munich.
  3. The Stones were in Munich on January (14th – 28th) recording early versions and primitive takes of Dance Little Sister, Drift Away, If You Really Want To Be My Friend, Living In The Heart Of Love, Luxury, Till The Next Goodbye, Time Waits For No One, Labour Swing, but I don’t think any of the CD tracks are early versions or primitive takes.
  4. The Stones were again in Munich on December (7th – 15th) (without Mick Taylor!), but they did not play any of the tracks from this CD. In fact, they played Act Together, Cherry Oh Baby, Fool To Cry, I Got A Letter.
  5. Tracks 1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 13, 14, 15 were recorded at Newbury, England, Stargroves (MJís house), Rolling Stones Mobile Studio (1974, April 10th – 15th) and London, Island Recording Studios (1974, May 20th – 25th)

This is my conclusion, please correct me if I’m wrong.

Note: Officially Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones on December 12, 1974

Notes:
This release started off as a fun project. I started to experiment with different snippets from many early Pink Floyd Songs and tried to seperate single instruments from those pieces.
The original idea was to make a LP-side long suite from Embryo.
This idea was dropped later when someone (god bless him) suggested the ÑBirmingham Suiteì to reconstruct as a studio recording.
Obviously the Floyd had been working on two suites at the beginning of 1970, which both contained rejected material from the Zabriskie Point sessions, one being what later became ÑAtom Heart Motherì, the other one being the Birmingham Suite. This second one was dropped from the setlist after a few shows because it obviously was not strong enough to become an early Floyd classic (but even more obviously became an early Floyd collectors’ classic because it was played so rarely and even never was properly taped). But what could it have sounded like, if Pink Floyd had not dropped it and had recorded it in studio?

A few words on song titles: The work title of ÑIn The Skyì was ÑVibes/Organ/Birdsì. After having completed this album we at MQR thought it might be nice to rename it. ÑIn The Skyì sounded very nice and was kept for this reason. Absolutely no idea if Pink Floyd would have given it a similar title. In the end they didnët even play it that way…
We knew about the Birmingham Suite being referred to as ÑHalcyon Piano in Niagara Dellofì but we didn’t like that title and there is no evidence for this title being an original band idea.
So we sought after a title that referred to something to eat just as the other suite’s working title ÑThe Amazing Puddingì, that would later become the almost equally stupid titled ÑAtom Heart Motherì.
After a few attempts like ÑZabriskie Stewì ÑZabriskie Soupì WRomanus came up with the fantastic and inimitably stupid ÑZabriskie Roastbeefì…
