Bob’s Boots review: The quality of this CD is well below average by today’s standards, but for a 1965 audience recording, it’s not bad at all. Get over the low fidelity buried sound, and you’ll be rewarded with a gem whose historical value cannot be overstated. It’s a great performance, to start with. Very unlike the raw power that was to follow in the coming year.. but just as good in it’s own rights. Consider it being the only recording of any substance of Dylan & The Hawks (The Band) of that year,… consider that it contains the only know version of the title track,… consider that some of the arrangements are like no other known recording, …. and this CD becomes a masterpiece.

2. Simple Twist Of Fate
3. Harder They Come/
4. Dear Prudence
5. Midnight Moonlight

Notes from original Torrentor: Excellent sounding sbd recording. No hiss whatsoever. I would not transfer an incomplete show except for the fact that this is likely an upgrade to the current “Cassette (x)” source. Goldwave used to put in a few fades, resample to 44.1 and normalize to 100%. Excellent performances of Harder They Come and Dear Prudence.

Problems:
d1t1 fades in – only a few notes missing
d1t3 tape flip – only a few notes missing

This is a very cool show with some really great music.  Sound is quite good, too.  It is also pretty much the last show I have uploaded.  I’ll try to upload another one or two over the next few days, but I’m still at the in-laws and their internet uploads at terrible speeds.  Likely what you’ll get is more links to various other sites until we get home.  Luckily we’ll be home soon so you won’t have to wait long.

Bootleg Bonanza: Neil Young – Berkeley, CA (11/2/76)

Nineteen Seventy Six was a busy year in the career of Neil Young.  He released Long May You Run with Stephen Stills and and took a two month tour in support of the album.  He also performed around fifty dates as a solo artist or with Crazy Horse.  He spent some time working on at least three albums and found time to perform during the Band’s final concert which was recorded on the Last Waltz.

You could call that a pretty typical year in the life of Neil Young.

This is a lovely little show towards the end of the year.  The first set is solo with just Neil and his guitar or piano, then the second set gets electrified and Neil brings out the whole band and they get scorching. The sound quality is good. It is a nice soundboard recording which is crisp, but a little cold sounding.  I don’t know how to explain that meaning in technical terms.  I don’t know if it is the age of the original tapes, or the fact that they haven’t been properly mastered, or cleaned up or whatever, but sometimes older bootleg recordings sound cold, and empty.  Like the sound has been stripped of some sort of internal warmth.

Don’t let that fool you, the quality is good and the performance is rocking.  Enjoy!
