Early Who versions recorded at the Record Plant, New York for the aborted Lifehouse project, which then became the material for the Who’s Next LP. For those of you who might have wondered how PT’s lead style got so mean sounding on Won’t Get Fooled Again, that’s Leslie West (from Mountain) playing lead on this version.

COMPLETE DEMO TRACKS OF “THE WALL” ALBUM

Recorded at The Floyd’s Britannia Row Studios

(Sept-Dec, 1978 & Late 1979)
& Super Bear Studio(April-Aug 1979)
in France.

This is just like being in the studio with the Floyd!

This is the studio demo track they drawn on to record the final mix of their “Wall” album: every track IS a radically different unreleased version to the album’s.

It includes loads of unedited mixes, never released tracks (merged into other songs), different lyrics, original sound collages etc …

Without the full lush arrangements you get a good idea of what Roger Waters had in mind when he first conceived The Wall: a dry, alienating & beautiful descent into his tormented mind.

It is a real surprise is to hear the band as the original 4 piece experimenting like in “the good old days” with all sorts of different ideas that didn’t make it onto the final mix for most: various synth lines, weird sounds, raw guitars, strange sound collages etc… One can appreciate the massive task of editing and changing most of these songs to fit on the double album we all know.

It is “The Wall” like you have never heard it before: just brilliant!!

The Sights and Sounds of Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd
Rotterdam October 12, 1967

From Underground To The Moon
Lucy Leave & Other Rarities

Quality: VG/Ex -MARC-OLIVIER

Comments: This RoIO is similar to “A Saucerful Of Outtakes”. There are 3 more tracks,
but I’m pretty sure the first 14 tracks were dubbed from “A Saucerful Of Outtakes”. Even
the cover is the same (they only changed the title).

“Lucy Leave” and “King Bee” come from the first Floyd’s session. Sound is excellent, in
mono.

“Interstellar Overdrive” is the “Tonite Let’s All Make Love In London” version (17′ long).
Mono. Sup.

“Astronomy Domine” is really nice! This is the Floyd’s appearance at the “Look Of The
Week” TV show, on May 14, 1967. It is often wrongly referred as from the “Games For
May” concert (Queen Elizabeth Hall, May 12), or from the Roundhouse (July 9). The sound
quality is excellent, in mono, with some tape hiss.

The most interesting tracks are “Experiment” (alias “Sunshine”) and “Silas Lane”. They are
outtakes from “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” sessions. And they are very rare on
RoIO CD ! “Sunshine” begins with organ chords, then some hazardous guitar’s lines, and
finally the drums and bass begin to play a strong rhythm. “Silas Lane” only features Syd
playing some chords, with sometimes strange distorted piano notes from Rick! This song
later became “Swan Lee (Silas Lang)”, and was recorded by Barrett during his sessions for
“The Madcap Laughs” album. It didn’t appear on the album, but on the 1988 compilation
“Opel”. Anyway, the version on this RoIO is a very early version, very far from the final
“Opel” version. The sound quality for these 2 rare outtakes is excellent, in mono.

With tracks 6 to 13, we have the first 2 BBC sessions (the only BBC sessions with Syd).
The first took place at the BBC Playhouse Theatre, September 25, 1967 (broadcast
October 1). The second session was recorded at Maida Vale Studio 4, December 20, 1967
(broadcast December 31). This is interesting to have these early sessions, but the sound
quality is only VG, and not better than the versions on “The Complete Top Gear Sessions
1967-1969″ RoIO.

“Flaming” is the alternate mix, as it appeared on the 3rd U.S. single (released on 5 Aug 1967,
on Capitol’s Tower label). This is a rough mono mix, not very different from the regular one
(some background sounds are mixed louder). It was mastered from vinyl. The sound quality
is “only” Ex (some “Sup” versions for this single can be found on other RoIOs: “A CD Full
Of Secrets”, “Pink Light Rarities”…).

“Reaction In G” is taken from the 1967 Rotterdam concert at Oude Ahoy Hallen (“The
Hippy Happy Fair”). This concert took place on 13 Nov 1967, not 12 Oct 1967 as it is often
referred on other RoIOs. This is a mono audience recording, not too bad for such an early
Floyd recording. VG.

The last track, “Milky Way”, is a Barrett outtake. I compared it with the version that appears
on the official “Opel” compilation, and it is slightly different. The basic track (acoustic guitar
and vocals) is the same. So I guess this is the “take 5” mentioned on “Opel”. But there are
some overdubs that DON’T appear on the “Opel” version: a kind of chorus guitar on the
background, and a bass playing a short transition. In fact, the “Opel” version is the simple
basic track, in perfect quality, but it’s only Syd playing and singing. The version here is more
than the basic track. Mono. Ex.

This is a nice compilation of early Floyd stuff. The most interesting tracks are the “Piper At
The Gates Of Dawn” outtakes (“Sunshine” and “Silas Lane”), and the “Look Of The Week”
appearance (“Astronomy Domine”). This compilation is also interesting if you don’t have the
1967 “Top Gear” sessions. – MARC-OLIVIER

Notes: From a “millionth generation” cassette bought in Argentina some 17 years ago by our friend Alejandro. For some reason this recording has not been heavily circulated, and is shrouded in mystery. We have no legitimate doubts as to the authenticity of this recording. It appears to be from a working set of demo tapes that were used as the actual blueprint for The Final Cut -the last album that Pink Floyd would release with Roger Waters in the lineup. In some places the difference between this and the actual release are subtle, and in other places, the differences are quite stark, changing the overall tone of some of the meanings inferred from the actual release. We won’t be listing all of the differences here, so you can enjoy your own personal exploration of this work in progress.

Free Range Pigs is releasing this volume for it’s historical significance. While the sound quality is not “disappointing”, the recording does “show it’s age” in some places. We’re not exactly sure, but it sounds as though this was recorded in a professional studio, so it is very likely that somewhere in this big world, a sonically superior copy exists.

Comments:
The first three songs are interesting; Interstellar Overdrive is the Tonight Let’s All Make Love In London version. But with “Flaming” the quality goes down rapidly, with
lots of tape hiss and some distortion; there’s also some static, like it was recorded off a
radio that wasn’t quite tuned in. It’s really a pity, because “Vegetable Man” and “Scream
Thy Last Scream” are better performances than on Early Singles (although Scream..” lacks
the “chipmunk” voice). “Jugband Blues” has the brass band bit played on a kazoo, which
makes it sound much better. If you can stand lots of static and hiss, or are willing to lop
off the high end to get rid of it (even with Dolby and the treble knob turned all the way
down it was still quite audible), it’s an interesting roio; otherwise you should probably avoid
it. –KNM

Lucy Leave (First Pink Floyd studio session circa 1966) I’m A Kingbee (first Pink Floyd
studio session circa 1966)

There’s been a lot of controversy about these first two tracks. Supposedly an acetate was
discovered in late 1988 which had these two songs on it with the name “The Pink Floyd”
handwritten on it. Some people swear it’s not Floyd, others say it is. Either way they’re on
this CD in great sound quality. This version is better than the vinyl roio “The Sorcerer’s
Apprentice” from years ago which featured these tracks.

Interstellar Overdrive (French EP version)

This is the full version from the French EP (which was cut short for release). Good for a
listen if you’re an “IO” fan. Great sound quality.

Astronomy Domine’ (live promo version)

This is taken right from the Roundhouse promo vid that has been in circulation among
video traders. I believe that this is the first time it’s available on CD, so some collectors
may want to note that when thinking about picking this up.

Experiment (Outtake from Abbey Road Studios 1967)

This is one track that fans have been saying is/isn’t Floyd for years. This version is a bit
shorter than the “Sunshine” track on the Syd roio “Rhamadam”. An interesting track
supposedly from the “Piper” sessions.

The Gnome (BBC 1967) Mathilda Mother (BBC 1967) The Scarecrow (BBC 1967)
Vegetable Man (BBC 1967) Pow R Toc H (BBC 1967) Scream Thy Last Scream
(BBC 1967) Jugband Blues (BBC 1967) As you can see, these are all culled from the
various BBC sessions the Floyd did for the BBC. These are here in really fine sound
quality, and a nice way to pad out the disc. The only problem is that you can find every
Floyd BBC track on “The Complete BBC Sessions” CD from Great Dane also in great
sound quality. Either way, these tracks are a must for the early Floyd fans out there.

Silas Lane (Outtake with Floyd)

Those of you who have the “Opel” collection will recognize this track. This is the song
which eventually became “Silas Lang”, which Syd never released on his first two solo
albums. An interesting track, but I like the finished track better than this one. Also, this
one fades out early, unlike the longer version you can find on the “Vegetable Man” vinyl
roio. -TIBIRD

The track titled ‘Jugband Blues’ dated back to early Dec.’ 67, when it was recorded as a
possible single. The free-form middle section of ‘Jugband’ was played by six members of
the Salvation Army that Syd brought into the studio. They deserve particular credit since it
is believed that the only direction they were given was to play ‘what they wanted .’ – SLW
