This release clears up a lot of speculation about the Beatlesí Star Club tapes, thanks to an unedited and unprocessed source tape (for which we cannot thank DarthDisc and the Darthelves enough). Although the recording dates are still guesses, we now know the correct order for about 2/3 of the songs. Even so, the second half of disc one is sequenced based more on smooth transitions than solid setlist information.

We tried to make sure every Star Club sound was accounted for, but not repeated: auditioning many Live At The Star Club CDs and LPS on a number of labels. Even so, we used Darthdiscís unprocessed tape wherever possible. As well as offering upgrades and previously unheard chat Red Hot, though still incomplete, is twice as long as before. ìRed SailsÖî now has an extra verse compared with the released version, while “I Saw Her Standing There” on disc two has an extra guitar solo. Conversely, we removed looped portions of “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down”, “Twist And Shout” and “I Remember You.”

It’s by no means perfect, but itís the best we have at the moment. And it’s the first time we’ve listened to the Star Club tapes in years. Hopefully you’ll gain a new appreciation for these historic recordings as well.

All tracks mono, at the correct speed, and eq’d for the most coherent listening experience. Enjoy!

Here’s why the original updates:

The full third version of “A Taste Of Honey” magically appeared, just after Star Club came out. It turns out that some dialogue that we placed on disc one belongs just before it. So we cut it out of disc one, put it at the end of “Hippy Hippy Shake” and did a minor tweak to “Money” just for the sake of continuity. A change of the info file and inside artwork to reflect this, and we’re all done.

I thought I’d try to break up the big FLAC file into smaller ones this time just to see how it goes. Obviously there were problems. Back in my windows days I used WinRar to compress the folders which gave me some nice options of how big to break each section into and then when unzipping them the folder would automatically be put into one folder instead of multiple ones. Well WinRar doesn’t exist on a Mac and what I could find only has the option of breaking them into nothing bigger than 100 mb chunks. As you can see that’s a lot of chunks which is totally obnoxious (please forgive me for not creating actual links for each part, I got lazy with my annoyance.) I was hoping Rapidshare would let me put this entire set into one folder and then link to that folder where you would then find all the links but that doesn’t seem possible either. All of this simply means I won’t likely be doing it this way again anytime soon.

The TV feed was used during the Sam Kinison section to avoid the radio station censorship button.A volume difference on the videotape between these audio sources was fixed using NERO wave editor. NERO was initially used (in 2002) to remove some audio glitches and just generally clean things up.The changes between FM and TV were minimized at the time.
Then when I re-mastered this in 2010 I used Audacity to work on the volume changes a little more.

*All tracks EAXC except for disc 1 tracks 13 & 14. Flawed discs did not allow eac extraction. It ran for 12 hours and didn’t complete so
I lifted those tracks with Nero Burning Rom program.

Review:
Crystal Cat has unleashed the new kitty of CDs for the 2001 tour. The packages are every bit as stunning as the 2000 crop. The full color, four page booklet
provides a wealth of venue photos and info. The discs are the standard Crystal Cat logo CDs with various color motifs. The back photo, and overall
aesthetics remain similar. What has changed dramatically is the front cover.Gone is the bland looking ticket stub of the previous
year; to be replaced with a sensual cartoon pinup girl of years past. Although the new 2001 “Love and Theft” album was not yet being performed
for this venue, the pinup girl image just seems to fit with the music of a simpler, more innocent time. Needles to say, the quality of the recording is simply
breathtaking.
