Note there are some slightly clicks at the end of Save Me and during the Now Im Here on disc 1 (probably a cd-r failure or something…)
The show misses 3 last tracks: WWRY, WATC and GSTQ and also SHA is cut after 0:50. But it’s the best version we can get at the moment!;) Correct me if I’m wrong.

Queen – Cologne, Germany (02/01/79)

This is the complete Cologne 79 show, something which collectors have been after for ages. It has always come out in bits and pieces, but always the same few songs were missing. Here it is, complete, and probably in the best quality we’ll ever get for it.

There are two audience sources. One has popped up on various LP and CD bootlegs over the years, and there is an uncut tape from this source (we’ll call this uncut one “source A”). The uncut tape is actually a bit worse quality than the best LP source. So, I have taken about 2/3 of the show from that LP source, and It’s Late, BoRhap, TYMD, SHA, WWRY, WATC, and GSTQ from the uncut tape. A second audience source (of inferior quality, which we’ll call “source B”) was used to fill in source A’s missing parts during Dreamers Ball and WATC.

Overall, the quality is close to excellent, but it fluctuates now and then, as indicated above. The edits are as smooth as possible. Also, I listened to the show carefully, and removed all of the vinyl ticks, and any other flaws in the sound. And of course they all play at the same tape speed/pitch.

Here’s the setlist. All are from the best possible LP source unless otherwise indicated:

Disc 1:
We Will Rock You (fast)
Let Me Entertain You
Somebody To Love
If You Can’t Beat Them
Death On Two Legs
Killer Queen
Bicycle Race
I’m In Love With My Car
Get Down, Make Love
You’re My Best Friend
Now I’m Here
Don’t Stop Me Now
Spread Your Wings
Dreamers Ball (part from source B)

Disc 2:
Love Of My Life
’39
It’s Late
Brighton Rock
Keep Yourself Alive
Bohemian Rhapsody (source A)
Tie Your Mother Down (source A)
Sheer Heart Attack (source A)
We Will Rock You (source A)
Are The Champions (source A completed with source B)
God Save The Queen

Distribute these files only if they are left completely unaltered. As always with my shares, if I see a complete Cologne 79 made available here or elsewhere in mp3 or any other lossy format, I will never share another thing here again.

Enjoy!

minimax master-series #287

Master – Audience recording

Equipment: Zoom H4N – Sound professional microphones SP-CMC-8 –
SP-SPSB-8 Sound Professionals Mini Battery Module

Parking-location: in front of the Geb‰ude 9 – going over to the main venue by bike
Catering (due to massive requests and protests!!): one bottle of mineral water, a vegetarian curry-wurst and
half a vegetarian hamburger with curry-sauce
Weather-conditions: outside the venue: hot and sunny, about 24∞ – inside the venue: hot, not so sunny, about 28∞

Location: exact 4,86 meters from the stage, 3rd row, a bit left, on the “Poncho”-position.
The exact position was (again due to massive requests in the past, by the way!) found
out from another taper-hero and legend (the Beaver) who accompagnied me that evening and had a Geodreieck with
him and checked that out. He also told the people around me to be quiet in his sympathic and friendly way (three
people now are found in hospital, four lost only one tooth and..) so I could record most of the time easily. He left
his place one time to buy a Kˆlsch and – you know, what must have happened then…!!?

Sound-quality: excellent (-), one or two times there’s an enthusiastic fan (maybe a Minimax) shouting or “singing”
Sound in the hall during the concert: excellent
The Hall: a big big big big crap!!

Tapers-critic of this concert: this was my third “Alchemy”-concert, but the first one I recorded so I did not
rush up to the rail in the front-row. You can hear that in several quiet songs as Poncho is howling as he’s missing
me that much standing right in front of him!! Sorry, Frank!!
The “Alchemy”-tour is so well known up here I don’t have to write anything about it. Strange, great show.
The Beaver and I were sure by going over there to get another well known setlist. As I wanted to be very early in the
hall we split before and met later again. I rushed in, the Beaver strolle a bit into town and also into that huge
cathedral, called the Kˆlner Dom, sat there for quiet a while, praised to the holy ghost for “making something with
the setlist” and – you see what happended later!!

During “Singer without a song” a drunk woman came over next to us, just when the Beaver wasn’t my security guy,
completely lost control and talked a lot of bullshit. I hope it can be heard very clear, as it might entertain you
a lot. Then, after a short two minutes at Ramada In she quit and was never seen again. Beaver, never ever do that again!!

I found the The Horse at Berlin and Hamburg in a better mood at the start, but at Kˆln it got better and better. And
again it was fantastic.

piercing (loud and sharp) whistling very close to the taper … “mostly” at the start or end of each song,
lots and lots of clapping and some talking too … taper had of bit of a problem with the cables the first
30 seconds of d2t2 … BUT, the band and VTM gave the very appreciative audience a fantabulous show.
many thanks to the taper for sharing all three show from Germany 1992

Notes:
It was a hot summer night with approx. 35∞C/95∞F by 8 p.m., but not the hottest – as we learned the next day in Schwetzingen.
The surroundings in the heart of Cologne directly at the famous cathedral for this sold out show were magnificent (only 3 concerts per year are allowed there).
It was great to meet well known faces from Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany before and after the show.
Despite the heat, Van and his band were in a great mood and delivered a very nice concert, although it had a quite normal setlist for an outdoor venue – stand outs for me were All Saint’s Day, Magic Time and In The Afternoon.
Fun fact: At the nearby pubs you were forced to consume food and/or drinks for a minimum of 100 euros per person from 6 p.m. onwards.

This is a very nice sounding recording. Gloria was patched with a second source for the minutes after Van left the stage.

This one is uploaded to celebrate my 15 year anniversary on DIME.
(And for those of you who don’t know, DIME was first made public in the Van Morrison fan community).
