I just got the above set and really haven’t formed an opinion yet, EXCEPT on the last disc. It is the same material as MEDDLER, but with all the music completely intact, no funny editing, none of Peel’s announcements, and in honest-to-God stereo! Someone mentioned this possibly happening due to the fact that about ten stereo copies existed, well I’m here to say that day has come!
They are real CD’s, and not CDR’s. Each is simply colored with a stamp naming and numbering each CD. Also the set itself is hand-numbered “312” of 1000.
There is a picture booklet included that is a collection of photographs, posters, and the like, including a snippet of an interview conducted by “ZZ”. Most of this I’ve seen before, including a shot of Gilmour and Waters during some of the Pompeii photography (I think they superimposed it in Echoes part I) As for a catalogue number, I’m sorry to say the only numerics aside from the edition numbers are numbers individual to each CD. -SEAMUS
I can state for sure that these are not from the stereo Meddler (which Harvested has since updated and treed as Meddled). -DAve.

I found in my boxes this tape, 80 min, with a side a vinyl transfer.
I’m not a collector of vinyl boots, so I made some research, I saw that it’s rare, so I decided to transfer the tape.
Here more info: http://www.floydboots.com/pages/u2.php
I didn’t change nothing, only split the tracks.
Nothing new but a enjoyable collection.

Cover: The cover consists of what seems to be a large breast sitting in the middle of a large field. The colors are an orange and blue psychedlic array. In the lower left hand corner is the title, ‘Milk Weg.’ Also, there is a cool, rarely seen picture of Barrett.

Quality: G+/G
Tracks 1-7, 12-16: Sup-, Tracks 8-9: Ex-, Track 10: G+,
Tracks 11 & 17 Sup+, Track 14: G

Comments:
The fragment of Reaction in G is not listed on the cover. The contents appear to be
derived from other recent ROIOs. – ANON

Melkweg is a dutch word, meaning milky way -GERHARD

Track 3, Swan Lee, is probably Syd’s demo. Track 5 and track 16 are of course the very
same song and the same as those found on Opel. Tracks 10 and 11 are probably off Peel
Sessions. Track 14 is mis-titled. It is really Octopus – a very fast, cut off version. Track 17
is also shortened. Track 8, Scream Thy Last Scream is shorter than usual, but decent
quality. In the middle Syd says ‘Oh, fuck it’, so something must have gone wrong. Track 7,
Silas Lang, is a non-vocals Swan Lee. It is live and probably is with Floyd, as it says. -JR

Tracks as they really are:

  1. Milky Way
  2. Dark Globe (with falsetto voices)
  3. Instrumental #1
  4. Opel
  5. Word Song
  6. Birdy Hop
  7. Swan Lee (backing track)
  8. Scream Thy Last Scream
  9. Vegetable Man
  10. Reaction In G
  11. Gigolo Aunt
  12. Two Of A Kind
  13. Terrapin
  14. Baby Lemonade
  15. Octopus
  16. Dark Globe (with falsetto voices)
  17. Word Song
  18. Interstellar Overdrive

This CD was definitely taken from vinyl source materials. Many of the tracks are muffled
(especially the Peel Sessions) and all have distinctive pops & crackles.

Although songs 2, 16 and 5, 17 are the same, they were clearly mastered from different
sources. (Perhaps the compiler thought they were different ??) Song 1 is identical to the
version on Opel, except that here, we hear some unidentified person say “1,2,3,4” at the
beginning. Similarly, song 6 is identical to that on Opel, except that we hear the person say
“Birdy Hop take 1”. Song 3 has been called “Swan Lee” and “Madcap’s Embrace”.
Actually, it’s neither. Malcolm Jones’ book refers to it as “Instrumental” and so shall I.

Songs 8 and 9 are listenable (but not great) studio versions of these two rare songs.
Despite the other RoIO entry for this disk, Syd does NOT yell “Oh, fuck it” in the middle
of Scream. He’s saying “Oh, sock it to me.” at the end of a long bit of guitar. (around 2:08
for those of you with the disk)

Song 10 is from the 7/23/67 Carlisle pirate radio broadcast. Sadly, the second (longer)
song (StCftHotS) was not included here.

Songs 11 to 14 are from Syd’s Peel Sessions. The quality here is terrible. Do yourself the
favour of buying the more common (and less illicit) Peel Sessions disk.

Song 15 was taken from Syd’s infamous Olympia, London gig of 6 June 70. Quite a good
Octopus if you can overlook the absent lyrics and horrible tape quality.

The Interstellar Overdrive is just over 5 minutes long and excellent quality. Can’t say for
sure where it’s been pinched from, as I can’t tell one IO from another.

All in all, most of these songs are available in much better quality on Opel or the Peel
Sessions CD. Those songs not available there are on other RoIOs in much better
(or equal) quality. This is one disk that you should probably just leave in the bin. -SCOTT

Track 14, “Just Before You Disappear”, is mislabeled. It is actually some very strange
version of “Octopus” recorded very badly. Tracks 5 & 16 are exactly the same (Untitled
Words). “Two of a Kind” is taken from the BBC recordings, and “Interstellar Overdrive”
is the same version from the original Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Other than that, the CD
is pretty good. Scream Thy Last Scream sounds good, with the “chipmunk” voice in the
background. Silas Lang is different from the “Opel” version, and it sounds good. Basically
the rest of these songs are different takes of the commercial song. If you don’t have a good
copy of Scream Thy Last Scream or Vegetable Man already, get this CD. A delectible
buy for the Barrett fan.

Tracks 1-7, 12-16: Sup-,
Tracks 8-9: Ex-,
Track 10: G+,
Tracks 11 & 17 Sup+,
Track 14: G -FOOLBERT STURGEON

Just Before You Disappear is a step too fast (just listen to the vocals, he sounds like an
elf!)

Swan Lee (7) is NOT with Pink Floyd, it s just the backing track to the song from Opel

Silas Lang (3) seems to be the backing track of Swan Lee, but with jazzy music mixed in
from another source.

The version of IO on this CD is simply a different mix than the one on Piper. That version
is two different takes mixed together. This is one of the final mix takes combined with a
different one. It fades out early, which is unfortunate, but there are many noticeable
differences compared to the official release.

Pink Floyd – Old Interviews (1967-1981)

Pink Floyd
Old Interviews from various cassette sources.

The interviews were seperated into tracks in case someone wanted to skip around, or revisit
a certain section later without leaning on the fast-forward button for 10 minutes to do it.
They are just for convenience, not official dividers.

Track 1: First half of a Nick Mason interview about the 1981 Wall concerts and his
“Fictitious Sports” album. Tape is dated 30 May 1981.

Track 2: Second half of the above Mason interview (the songs played on the show were
cut out on this copy).

Track 3: “Rockspeak” 1974 interview with Rick Wright, segment 1.

Track 4: “Rockspeak” 1974 interview with Rick Wright, segment 2.

Track 5: “Rockspeak” 1974 interview with Rick Wright, segment 3.

Track 6: “Rockspeak” 1974 interview with Rick Wright, segment 4.

Track 7: “Rockspeak” 1974 interview with Roger Waters, segment 1.

Track 8: “Rockspeak” 1974 interview with Roger Waters, segment 2.

Track 9: September 1967 Roger Waters interview, when “Piper” was in stores.

Various Artists – Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 11

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 11: Lookin’ For a New Friend

Happy new year, fellow Dylan cover fans! Volume 9 of this series featured songs that hadn’t been covered in the first eight sets. To kick off the second season of NSD, this one features artists who have not previously appeared in this series. One special note: track 5, “I Thew it All Away” performed by Paul Kelly, comes from a KCRW special called “Oh Merci!”, hosted by John Wesley Harding, on Dylan’s birthday in 1993. My friend Bob taped about 30 minutes of it, from which I’ve culled this track–but if anyone has the full show, please share it!

And while I’m making requests, here’s another, for Randall (in memory of his friend Mike): can someone send me a lossless version of Bruce Springsteen’s performance of “Forever Young” at the John Hammond tribute show? Randall gave me an MP3 version, and it’s beautifully heartfelt; I’d love to include a lossless version in a later volume of this series.

That’s it for now. Please keep the suggestions and files coming! As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Enjoy!

Disc 5

“Sound Opinions,” WXRT-FM, Chicago
January 3, 2001 Length: 78:52 (condensed from a 2-hour program)

Radio show / discussion devoted to Syd Barrett: A retrospective of his career, tracing his influence on Pink Floyd through all eras of the band’s history. To our knowledge, the first-ever radio program — on commercial American airwaves, anyway — devoted solely to Syd (and Pink Floyd in relation to Syd).

Hosted by Jim DeRogatis (author of “Kaleidoscope Eyes,” the definitive history of psychedelic rock from 1960s through 1990s, and “Let It Blurt,” pioneering biography of Lester Bangs), and Greg Kot. Includes previously-unheard interviews with Gilmour and Mason.

Syd / Pink Floyd OOPS (Out Of Phase Stereo) Mixes- These are fan-created remixes. These are NOT session outtakes. OOPS is a process by which a home user can remix a stereo track, thus revealing musical details that were less evident in the commercial mix. Depending on how the original track was put together, the differences may be subtle or dramatic, varying from song to song and in different parts of the song.

To better understand the OOPS effect, go here:

and then here:

This CD consists of nearly every available stereo Pink Floyd track Syd is either on or ever been rumored to be on. We left off “See Saw” and “Jugband Blues” because they wouldn’t hold up to repeated listening. (“Jugband” whispers for most of the track, except for some of the Salvation Army band when the volume spikes. “See Saw” fades in and out with vocal and mellotron.)

08 Dark Globe (choral version) 2:58
09 Here I Go 3:12
10 Octopus 3:48
11 Golden Hair 2:00
12 Late Night 3:11
13 Swan Lee 3:14
14 Rats (Left Channel, not OOPS) 2:57
15 Gigolo Aunt, take 9 3:48
16 Baby Lemonade 4:12
17 Dominoes 4:10
18 It Is Obvious 3:00
19 Rats 3:02
20 Maisie, alt mix 3:00
21 Gigolo Aunt 5:48
22 Wind And Dined 2:59
23 Wolfpack 3:41
24 Effervescing Elephant 1:55
25 Golden Hair (instrumental) 1:56

This is the best of the Barrett solo material, as rendered into out-of-phase More tracks could be included, but the OOPS process didn’t yield a particularly interesting mix, and considerations of space won out.

It goes without saying that acoustic songs could not be used. With nothing to work with beyond a guitar and a vocal, OOPS is beside the point. By necessity, this disc features Syd with a band, or at least some overdubs.

(CDs 9-10 feature a few single-channel mixes left over from CD8, noted as such. These are not OOPS mixes, but feature one channel of the original panned to stereo. A few of these tracks are good enough to stand alone as such, and so we present them this way.)

Every OOPS and mono track in HYGIY 8-10 has been rendered as a dual-signal expansion: one channel is a mirror image of the other. For the listener, this means a richer soundfield and a more natural ambience than could be expected from pure mono, yet without any obvious attempt at a stereo result from a mono source.

Steve Earle – The Alternate Copperhead Road

Steve Earle
The Alternate Copperhead Road
Studio, 1987-1988

01 Copperhead Road
02 Snake Oil
03 Back To The Wall
04 The Devil’s Right Hand
05 Johnny Come Lately
06 Even When I’m Blue
07 You Belong To Me
08 Waiting On You
09 Once You Love
10 Nothing But A Child

This collection of demos with band has a more country-orientated feel than the final version of Copperhead Road, and thus seems more like the logical successor to Exit 0. Certainly an interesting listen, but it often ends up sounding a little emasculated by comparison with the full-blooded snarl of the released album.

Story:
This is a little bit of nostalgy.
I bought this boot (I’m almost shure it’s a bout) when i was still very young.
It was played quite a lot then because, well, unissued song in superb quality you know (“never released on a pink floyd album” and all that shit).

Technical Mumbo Jumbo:
Now, after reactivating my good old turntable, now equipped with a Ortophon OM 10 Super cartridge, which -perhaps for the first time ever- is mounted properly (with E. Schˆn moulding tool), I decided to transfer this old treasure to 24/48 with my new Cambridge Audio 540 P phono preamp directly to my RME HDSP 9632.
I have slightly declicked it afterwards.

Music:

  1. Richard Skinner
  2. Embryo (1970-07-16)
  3. John Peel (1970-07-16)
  4. Green is the Colour (1970-07-16)
  5. Careful with that Axe, Eugene (1970-07-16)
  6. Richard Skinner
  7. One of these Days (1971-09-30)
  8. John Peel (1971-09-30)
  9. Echoes (1971-09-30)

There is nothing special about this record, perhaps some of you have it as well and in better quality.
This Copy is not that what one would usually call “mint condition”. The only thing about this one is the version of echoes which has a delayed ping at the beginning which gives the intro a special flavour. I don’t know if the delay was added by the BBC for Broadcast or the bootleggers (if it is a bootleg). But it wasn’t a bad idea at all…

On the Fotos coming with this you can see the record that this one was made from.
