Andrew attended this show with the taper, and copied his friend’s master shortly after the show.
Thanks to Andrew Faintych for preserving and providing the tapes, and allowing me to transfer his
tapes of this show. Sound Forge 5.0 was used sparingly to eliminate a few noises and gaps on the
tapes, soften a few harsh spots between songs, and add Cats. Thanks to Charles Bass for providing
the Cats Under The Stars shn to replace the substantially missing one we had.

The first notes of Cats are missing.
There are brief periods of static during Mission In The Rain.
Tangled Up In Blue starts well into the first verse due to prolonged tape flip/rewind.
All considered, this is a very enjoyable show and recording. Thanks again Andrew!

Notes:
I acquired this recording in the mid-80’s and recently noticed that a sbd doesn’t circulate for this show, so I dug out my cassette copy and transfered it. Don’t let the number of analog generations scare you – the recording is clean and the hiss is fairly minimal. All I know about the lineage is that my copy was made from a 3rd generation cassette. I assume is was mastered on cassette and that the first couple of generations were also cassette, but I don’t know for sure. Not the greatest mix in the world, with the guitar rather low and the kick drum fairly prominent, but it is a enjoyable recording nonetheless.

I simply transfered the recording as it is on my cassette copy – no editing was done other then fading in/out at the beginning and end, as well as a couple spots where the master was paused between tracks. I presume a complete sbd recording of the show exists and hopefully it will surface someday – until then, enjoy!

AUD Patches from archive.org: “Nak 300’s > MC > DAT > CDR”

The SBD source appears to have a few casssette generations in it. There
is audible hiss and a minor low-end hum. Nevertheless, the tape is still
very listenable and the show is well worth it…

The SBD was missing the first two songs, so I grabbed those from the AUD
version posted at LMA and used Soundforge to correct the pitch, match
the volume, and add them to this file set. I also added 18 seconds from
the AUD to cover the tape flip in drums, which comes at the end of the
Thunder Machine segment. And, I used Soundforge to make a few small edits
and fades where needed in the SBD source.

I tracked the files for CDR burning onto two 700-MB discs. The track-ID
breaks between Stranger & Scarlet, and Good Lovin’ & Baby Blue, fall
onto silent gaps, so you can rearrange these into a three-disc set that
runs in the correct order.

There’s a disruption in the sound during Jerry’s solo in Peggy-O. It
sounds like the audience ambience mics were briefly turned up too loud.
There’s a small cut at the beginning of Red Rooster, presumably for a
tape flip.

THANKS to Jake Feinberg for locating and sharing these discs! ENJOY !

Caveat from original uploader:
–This recording undoubtedly has a number of analog generations and is therefore quite worn and muddy. This show has not circulated in digital as of October 2002, though. I might only recommend this to the completists or serious fans of early ’71 Dead.

–This is almost certainly not the complete show. The order and set markers are also uncertain. It seems likely that JBG would end the first set, and it is purely speculation that China->Rider is from the 2nd set. The other songs are vaguely indicated as 1st set material according to deadlists.
–Sound Forge was used for normalization and to correct the pitch.

I believe it was Guy Clark that said he’d gladly stand on Bob Dylan’s coffee table (in his boots) and declare that Townes Van Zandt was the greatest singer-songwriter around. Well, I’d still give props to Dylan, but Townes is definitely one of the best. This show was recorded only a few years before his death and while he still sounds good, you can feel the years of abuse creeping up on him. But ah, man it is still Townes and you can’t hardly get better than Townes.

This show finds Townes a little less talkative than some of my other shows I have of his, but when he does talk he’s still dry and witty. The songs, though, are of course what we come to hear and they are well represented. The sound quality is good, but a little soft. I find I have to turn it up when Townes is talking and then it is still a little difficult to hear what he’s talking about.
