Show Recording Notes

The several spots of diginoise have been patched with the analog source…the end result is not perfect, but it is much better than the diginoise. The reason for the “?” in the source lineage right before the dat, is because the main source used has unfortunately been compressed in some way (either by being put onto a minidisk or by being mp3 compressed). It is the only complete circulating recording however. Some other minor pops have also been removed. Very special thanks to Vikas for uncovering this gem.

Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons)

After a nice ‘Release’ opening, Ed says, “We’re in a beautiful place. Why go home?” leading to guess what song? After a few opening licks of ‘Breath’ are played, the song is announced as ‘A Breath and a Scream,’ as it frequently was called then. Later Ed asks, “Did we meet some of you guys last night? Cause the tickets were good for both nights, right? That’s how I wanted it to work out.” After repeating, “I’m not crazy, I’m not crazy,” they launch into ‘Even Flow.’ A few ‘Hard To Imagine’ riff are played after ‘SOLAT,’ and an improv based on ‘Hard To Imagine’ follows ‘Black.’ Ed tells the crowd, “You’re all gonna die some day; you’re all gonna die fat and old … it’s true,” leading to ‘Alive,’ followed by some guitar noodling. Ed compliments the “pit” likening it to a “Norelco razor” with the three spinning heads. The second set opens with a jam with lyrics based loosely on ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me.’ Ed thanks everyone who they’ve met and says it makes them want to move there and “I wanna have your baby.” After ‘TITFW,’ Ed says goodbye and then asks the lights to be turned back up: “I wanna get a picture of these guys.”

From the original uploader:
This is the version with the drums overdubbed by Mitch Mitchell at Electric Lady Studios, N.Y in 1972. It’s unconfirmed but I wander if the bass wasn’t also redubbed (even partly) by Billy Cox at the same period ? This is 2 analog + 1 digital generations away from the original stereo safety masters but the digital transfer was Mini-Disc (that can’t make it 100% ‘true lossless’). I never come across an as good version without MD copy in. When Alan Douglas was in charge of the “vault”, soundboards went in and out…
One of these was the Maui overdubbed stereo safety master that was copied to VHS in the late 70s or early 80s (long before DATs & CDRs !) and then came back to the “vault”, so the 1st generation VHS copy remains the best & most complete soundboard source in circulation.
Note that all cuts on this tape are like on the safety master but it is unknown if these cuts are on the multi-track masters with original drums. The owner give a few copies to selected people, leaving them with a 2nd generation tape source. He still has the 1st gen VHS source apparently, but is currently out of the trading business. This tape has been speed corrected, but no other alterations have been made. A “Stoned” Conversation with Jimi Hendrix, Pat Hartley & Chuck Wein is added as bonus on disc 2.

Notes from somebody, not me:
This is the best sounding show from the Rock In A Hard Place Tour I’ve heard so far(I’ve only heard 3 others though, but this is the best out of them all). Great soundboard recording, I’d give it an A/A+. AS for the performance, I’m pretty sure Steven is under the influence of something. Someone throws a fire cracker on stage during Lord of the Thighs, and thats when it gets funny. Afterwards he sings Happy Birthday to Tom Hamilton (but it’s not his birthday). Besides that,
the band sounds good.

The only real problem is that Sweet Emotion is incomplete, unless they only played the solo. It lists the song as being 2 minutes long, but the first 30 sec is just Tyler talking, then it switches to the solo for the last 1:30 minutes. I ordered this from a store a few years back and I got the CDrs, along with a paper insert that just said Alohasmith! and the track listing and date, no artwork. I’m not totally sure, but I believe this was mass produced. Overall, a great sounding show, that I recommend to anybody who likes classic Aerosmith.
