Notes:
Townes Van Zandt was an American singer-songwriter. He is widely held in high regard for his poetic and often heroically sad songs. In 1983, six years after Emmylou Harris had first popularised it, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard covered his song “Pancho and Lefty”, reaching number one on the Billboard country music chart.

Much of his life was spent touring various dive bars, often living in cheap motel rooms and backwoods cabins. And for much of the 1970s, he lived in a simple shack without electricity or a phone. He suffered from a series of drug addictions, alcoholism, and was given a psychiatric diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

Van Zandt died on New Years Day 1997 from health problems stemming from years of substance abuse. A revival of interest in Van Zandt occurred in the 2000s when two books, a documentary film (Be Here to Love Me), and numerous magazine articles about the singer were written

This two CD set features two live shows recorded in Johnson City, Tennessee in 1985 and Helsinki, Finland in 1993.

I was standing on the rail with my usual setup: Schopes mics, Nbox preamp and Edirol recorder. Just as The Horse hits the stage I notice that no signal was going into the recorder whatsoever! In a hurry I checked every connection, unplugged and plugged in again but with the same result. Nothing was being recorded. So in a split second decision I unplugged the mics, took out the recorder from my pocket and holding it in front of me to use it’s internal mics.

Hence the first few seconds of Love And Only Love is missing. Also stupidity I plugged in again after a couple of minutes to check if there was a singnal now. Of course it wasn’t. So there’s a 4 second gap at about 2 minutes in in Love And Only Love because of this.

It was quite a task doing all this on the rail, with a security guy right in my face. I had to hide the recorder while still having it as much in the open as possible trying not to obstruct the sound. It’s a wonder he didn’t spot it 😉

Needless to say, the sound on this isn’t what I was expecting and hoping for. But after a little tweaking it’s quite listenable, even if there’s still some slight low end distortion and some hiss, particulary on the acoustic tracks. (Levels were not set up to use the internal mics obviously)

Finally, for those who care: Later I found out what was wrong: One of the four fresh 9v batteries in the mic preamp was completely dead, even though I’d checked them all before the show. Oh, well. Shit happens. And as we all know far bigger shits than this has happened with the tour now!

Anyway, enough of this technical rant. The music is the important thing. Enjoy the show! (One of the best Mr. Soul of the tour?)

Excerpts from “Performing Artist, 1986*1990 & beyond” by Paul Williams, p. 215 – 218 —

The third show, however, in Helsinki, Finland, May 30, sounds terrific. Dylan’s vocals and his
harmonica playing are exemplary, and his rapport with the band, and with co-guitarist Smith on
the acoustic songs, seems much improved over many of the 1988 shows. Helsinki is a tape worth
pursuing (imagine a version of “All Along the Watchtower”” noteworthy just for the excellence
and inventiveness of the harmonica parts) and, along with Athens (the last show of the
European leg, June 28), a solid example of the spring ’89 tour at its best. The Never Ending
Tour was starting to do what it would do well for at least another thirteen years: provide
accidental art able to please and to speak to listeners miles and years away from the space-
time location of the original performance. (p. 215)

Even though Dylan could barely be seen by the Helsinki crowd under his big hood on the darkened
stage in May 1989, he presumably could see and hear them – and listening to the tape of this
show you can feel him responding to their presence (and to his ideas about their ability and
willingness to react spontaneously) as he expresses himself very freely through his band and his
voice and his harmonica playing… (p. 218)
