Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 25 – You Can Always Come Back, But You Can’t Come Back All the Way

To those of you who wanted more NSD, here you go. For those who didn’t, why are you reading this? Big thanks to Sherm, who got in touch out of the blue with “Things Have Changed,” inspiring me to compile another volume.

As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good, PM me. I suspect more volumes will follow, albeit infrequently.

Enjoy!

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 20: A Land of Wolves and Thieves

To celebrate reaching twenty volumes of this series, we’ve got ten new songs to the NSD canon this time out, and a dozen new artists. Among the songs are such genuine rarities as the early gem “Troubled and I Don’t Know Why,” and “I Must Love You Too Much,” co-written in the late-seventies with Helena Springs. Also on hand are Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter’s version of the rarely covered “Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts”; one of Dylan’s earliest songs, “Song to Woody,” sung by British folk pioneer Wizz Jones; and much, much more…

A couple of notes: the beginning of “Trust Yourself” is cut off, but the song is so rarely covered that I decided to include it anyway; and there’s some brief digi-noise on “Man Gave Names to the Animals,” but this terrific version still merits inclusion.

As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Please keep the suggestions and files coming–if you’ve got something good, PM me.

Enjoy!

Various Artists – Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 19

Various Artists
Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 19: Humdingers! Folksingers! Dead Ringers!

Give credit for the inspiration for this volume to Stew (of StewART fame), who has quietly, then not so quietly, insisted that this series could not be complete without a Dylan cover performed by Joan Baez. I’ve tried and failed to get Joan into several previous volumes, so this time decided to build the entire set around her, including ’60s contemporaries like Arlo Guthrie, Gordon Lightfoot, and Judy Collins as well as current artists whose styles blend in with these old-school folkies. We’ve also got a couple of bluegrass goodies, and some stripped down rock bombast in the form of the Lovemongers, a one-off group formed for an anti-Gulf War 1 benefit and featuring Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart (along with Sue Ennis and Frank Cox). In all, 15 new NSD perormers here, and four new songs, including the instrumental “Nashville Skyline Rag” (Nobody PLAYS Dylan Like Dylan, either).

Speaking of Ms. Baez, if anyone has a good live version (unofficial, of course) of her doing “Love is Just a Four Letter Word,” please PM me. Otherwise, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Please keep the suggestions and files coming–if you’ve got something good, PM me.

Enjoy!

Bob Dylan – The Pre-NET Covers Collection (1974-1987)

Bob Dylan
The Pre-NET Covers Collection 1974-1987

As complete a collection as possible “The Genuine Before The Never Ending Tour Covers Collection 1974-1987”.

A prequel to the previous set from the best sources available…every cover song performed from each year is represented at least once.
…a note on this, there are 2 covers performed in 1976 that are not circulating. A text file is included in the download for these tracks to mark their omission.

Also represented is more than one version if for example there is a solo piano & a version with the band or an instrumental version.

I have only adjusted the volume & fade in/out of tracks to give a better listening experience as the nature of the collection is that it comes from a vast number of different sources. No Compression, EQ, or any other kind of tampering with the audio was done.

P.S. Cover Artwork has also been created. A Front cover image (above) for the overall set & an image for each year in the downloads.

P.P.S. I’ve put a huge amount of work into this, and I’ve tried to be as careful as possible, I hope mistakes (if any) are minor.

A huge thank you to all the tapers & uploaders & the ER community!

(Recorded/Transferred/ FLAC’d & Tagged By OldNeumanntapr) Recorded 3/4 Of The Way Between Stage And Repeater Stacks, On The Right Side. Cut Into Discs As You See Fit.

ONT Notes-
This show was so very emotional, being Bill’s tribute concert. I had mail order tickets to both the 10/27 and 10/31 shows, and recorded both of those in the taper section. 10/27/91 was the 1st show after Bill’s unfortunate accident, and 10/31/91 was most definitely the most powerful Dead show I’ve ever witnessed, with Ken Kesey coming out during Drums / Space. We had recorded Neil Young at the Bridge Benefit at Shoreline the night before the memorial show in the park. After the Bridge show I stayed the night in my VW bus parked in front of a friend of a friend’s place in Atherton. We got up the next morning and drove up to Golden Gate Park. Even early in the morning the crowds were terrible. This was the last trip that I had made in my restored ’67 VW camper bus. I retired it right after and it sat in the garage for a year before I sold it. I always thought that the Bill Graham memorial was a fitting ‘last ride’. I recorded the memorial show with my triple set of Nakamichi CM-300s->Sony TC-153SD cassette portable. I also ran my D6 so I could give masters to a friend. We were 3/4th of the way back between the stage and the repeaters, on the right side. (I shot some b&w photos with a Pentax MX and 50 mm f/1.7 lens. I was working as a darkroom tech at Photo Ad then, and made large proof sheets of my film on graphic arts paper after the show. I scanned some of the frames to put with the music files.) I remember thinking that it started of crowded and got progressively more packed with people as the day wore on. I think the Chronicle said something like 300,000 people in the park. I believe it! It reminded me of something that I saw on Sesame Street when I was a little kid in the early 70s. They took a large pickle jar and filled it with small stones. ‘Is it full? No, we can add more.’ And they poured in small ball bearings. ‘Is it full? No, we can add more’. Then they added sand, and then water. Finally it was full. The crowd at the Polo Fields that day brought back that memory, with more and more people pushing their way in. I remember all the bands that day and also Robin Williams who did some stand up comedy between sets. I also remember the plane that dropped flowers. The Dead closed the show, before the encores, with ‘Sunshine Daydream, having played ‘Sugar Magnolia (Bill’s favorite Grateful Dead song) to open the 10/27/91 show, to complete the piece. John Fogerty played with the Dead and sounded ragged, but good, but at least it was nice to hear him. It was only about two years before that he played with Bobby and Jerry at the Oakland Stadium AIDS Benefit. I remember thinking that there had been a lot of historical shows in the park at that spot and this was going to be another one. I’ll never forget it. 😦

Enjoy! Share freely, don’t sell, play nice, don’t run with scissors, etc. 😉

–With the season of Jerome (8/1 – 8/9) nearly upon us,
I thought I might make a little mix and seed it. No
biggie, these arent rare recordings or anything. I do
prefer many of these versions, and think of them as
being well played, and extremely energetic.
Jerry at his finest!

–This is just a fun little mix. Ive not even bothered
name the tracks to etree standards or anything. Also
this is my first time seeding flac, so it is an
expiriment of sorts…enjoy….Chris Davis (7/19/05)

blessing of the poo…thanks for the support, my

*So far as I can tell, this is the first Its no Use. The
Jerry Site seems to confirm this…

Without me intending it, this volume became a Garcia and
Saunders compilation. Plenty more on the shelf, so many
songs yet to cover, but I was just in a jazzy mood. The
horns sound great! Look for more in a day or two.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Import Label: Righteous ASIN: B0039L1J6Q VARIOUS ARTISTS (Artist)
The peculiar thing about this release is the title, “Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan.” These are NOT Dylan songs, but his covers of traditional songs. I don’t wonder much how they decided on the misleading description.

I included some art in these last ones. It may/may not have any relationship to our subject. As always if you don’t want them, just set your client to opt out.

JS starts to get a bit ‘burned’ starting in here somewhere. See below. I can’t blame him at all and I don’t have to collect the tracks and put ’em into an attractive collection and get the ball rolling and all that. I can start to understand his reluctance when I asked him if he’d want to put them back up again (mid 2018 I think).

warm up that .torrent client, ’cause here we go!

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 36: Down in the Easy Chair

The last one of these I did came out on Dylan’s 70th birthday. Now we have one for America’s 235th birthday. To celebrate, we have the first NSD appearance of “Let Me Die in My Footsteps,” a lovely acoustic version by the Minnesota duo Roma di Luna.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and most of all the composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

Finally, I have started an MP3 blog, which will feature tracks not in this series. Right now, you can get Jeff Tweedy’s cover of “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight,” which I believe is new to circulation; it’s a studio outtake from the “I’m Not There” soundtrack. I’ll be adding stuff daily, if there seems to be interest. (I won’t be posting MP3 versions of this series, as Music Ruined My Life is already doing a fine job of that.) Here’s the link:
