The Million Dollar Bashers Celebrate Bob Dylan Going Electric

image host

On July 25, 1965, Bob Dylan plugged in and performed live with an electric guitar and an amplified rock and roll band for the first time ever. It would be stretching things to say this moment forever changed history, but its impact on the folk music scene and its influence on popular music cannot be overstated.

For the 60th anniversary of this momentous occasion, the Bob Dylan Center sponsored a concert at the historic Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on July 26, 2025.. An all-star cast of musicians performed songs by Bob Dylan from that era.

Led by musical director Lee Renaldo of Sonic Youth, the house band featured Nels Cline (Wilco) on guitar, Ethan Miller (Howlin’ Rain) on bass, Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) on drums, and Mikael Jorgenson (Wilco) on keyboards. Rotating through was a selection of guests, including John Doe (X), Robyn Hitchcock, Emma Swift, Sunny War, Dean & Brita (Luna), plus Joy Harjo, the current artist in residence at the Dylan Center, and Doug Keith, the musical director.

There were actually two shows performed this night, an early show that started at 6:30 and a late performance starting at 9:00. The wife and I opted for the early performance. It would be nice, we thought, to get home from a concert before midnight. And they had seats (a rarity for the Cain’s), and we are old. We’ve attended many concerts at this venue, and while it is one of my favorites, I have to admit its usual standing room only status leaves my back aching by the end of the night.

Things got started with “Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine),” an odd choice since Dylan didn’t debut the song in concert until 1974, but a rollicking one. They played it like those electric songs at Newport – fiercely, like it could veer completely out of control at any minute.

Emma Swift then came out to sing a lovely version of “The Times They Are A-Changin'”.” I gotta admit, folks, I teared up at that one. There was something electric in the air (pun intended, I guess). Everyone seemed to know this was something special. To hear these amazing musicians playing these amazing songs, songs that everybody there knew and loved, was incredible.

There were a couple of more times when the band played the songs like Dylan and his Band back in the early days, but mostly they made them their own.

I didn’t keep notes, so I won’t go through the setlist one by one. I’m not likely to remember who sang what. But I’ll try to give a good overview.

Everyone was clearly excited to be there. These are all busy, working musicians with their own songs to sing, their own tour to play. But they took time out to come celebrate Bob Dylan. Renaldo especially seemed to be having the time of his life. You could see him lip synching along, off-mike, to many of the songs as someone else took the vocals.

I’m a very casual fan of Luna, so I wouldn’t have been able to pick Dean & Brita out of a lineup, but as soon as he started to sing, I realized immediately who they were. They did their songs like duets. Their version of “Just Like a Woman” was especially sweet and beautiful.

I’m not particularly well-versed in John Doe or X, but he exuded an old-school cool on his two songs, and he was one of the only ones who actually spoke to the audience.

I’m not familiar with Sunny War at all, but she laid it down for “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” the only one of the night to do any kind of Dylan impression. She seemed quite shy, slipping on and off the stage like she hoped nobody would notice her.

I’m sure Joy Harjo is a fine poet, but she’s not a great singer. She was way off key, loud, and honestly, just bad. She sang like a poet, using her own rhythms and phrasings. I’m not opposed to that, Dylan often messes with the phrasings of his songs, but she couldn’t seem to quite get all the words out of her mouth before the music had moved on. And in songs like “Mr. Tambourine Man” when there are a lot of words, that just came out awful.

All of the other guests came out on a rotating basis, but the legendary Robyn Hitchcock played his two songs one right after the other. He played a terrific version of “Highway 61 Revisited” and then absolutely nailed “Desolation Row” with just him and Nels Cline on the stage. He called it one of the greatest songs ever written and “also one of the longest.” But he got all the lyrics just exactly perfect, and I never saw him once look at the teleprompter. Again, this was a group of musicians who just love the songs of Bob Dylan.

MVP of the night was Nels Cline. I’ve seen him multiple times with Wilco (several times at this venue) and at least once in those shows I’ll turn to my wife and say “Nels Fucking Cline!” – usually just after a mind-melting solo. The man is an absolute beast on guitar. This night he was more subdued, and more nuanced. On the big rock songs he jammed with the best of him, but on the softer ballads, he added beautiful textures and on “Desolation Ro,w” his took an acoustic guitar and made perfect Spanish sounding melodies. He was the only musician to stay on state the entire night.

But really the entire band was first-rate – world-class musicians filled with joy, playing music they love. This was not necessarily the greatest concert I’ve ever attended but it was probably the most fun I’ve ever had.

Everybody came out at the end for “Like a Rolling Stone.” It was an obvious choice – Renaldo even said so, while Hitchcock quipped (at least its not “Forever Young”). It was a fine version with everyone getting a verse and with faces filled with joy.

You can see the full setlist here.

On the other hand department. The next struggle could be the VU collection for those, like me who don’t have them all. Other candidates: Pink Floyd; Neil Young; John Mellencamp; nominations for yr choice candidate, like eg. some women?

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Vol. 28: On the Waters of Oblivion

Oblivion indeed! It’s been seven months since I did one of these, and the reason is my computer crashed and I lost almost all my Dylan cover files. Among the things I lost were the first 27 volumes of this series, which I never got around to burning to disc. If anybody who’s been enjoying these wants to send me the series on disc, please PM me–I’ll dedicate the next volume to you!

This set sounds great to me, especially Ashley Hutchings’ beautiful version of “Angelina” and the last track by Billy Bragg. It’s based on “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” and I found it tremendously moving. That said, I find the politics of this particular issue morally confusing and don’t intend to make any political statement by including the recording here. There’s loads of info on Rachel Corrie online if the song peaks your interest.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

(I put this bit in. don’t mean to pique controversy. as above) r5

The Lonesome Death of Rachel Corrie, by Billy Bragg (2006). Bragg borrows Dylan’s tune and his “tears” refrain, but re-writes the verses to commemorate a young American peace activist killed in Palestine in 2003

An Israeli bulldozer killed poor Rachel Corrie,
As she stood in its path in the township of Raffa..

But Rachel Corrie believed in non-violent resistance
Put herself in harm’s way as a shield of the people
And paid with her life in a manner most brutal

But you who philosophise disgrace and criticise all fears,
Take the rag away from your face.
Now ain’t the time for your tears.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 24: Oh Mama, Can This Really Be the End?

Welcome back friends. This may or may not be the last in the series–there’s plenty more in the archives, but frankly I am having trouble keeping track of what I’ve already used. (If anyone has a breakdown by song and/or artist, please let me know!) With the end perhaps upon me, I’ve included a lot of things I’ve been saving, including six songs that are new to the series.

As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. (If you’ve sent me something that hasn’t been included yet, sorry–if I do more of these later, I’ll try to get your songs in!) Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good, I’d still love to get it, so PM me. If/when I get enough great stuff, I’ll be back.

Finally, for those of you who like Leonard Cohen or the Beatles, I’m going to put together some cover compilations of their songs. If you’ve got anything that might fit, I’d love to hear from you via PM.

Enjoy!

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 22: A Thousand Miles Behind

It’s been four weeks since the last edition of NSD, but the delay has certainly not been due to any lack of good material. We’ve got 22 new tracks for Volume 22, including 15 new artists and six new songs to the NSD canon. But what truly distinguishes this installment is the intentional absence of both “All Along the Watchtower” and “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” which must be the most covered Dylan songs around. Chances are they’ll be back next time.

Many of Volume 22’s performers may not be familiar at first glance (some because their names are usually hidden behind those of their bands), but they are all featured in the All Music Guide (allmusic.com), and I encourage you to look them up there. Of particular note is the Alpha Band cover of “You Angel You”–for those of you unfamiliar with these guys, they are Rolling Thunder Revue veterans T Bone Burnett, Steven Soles and David Mansfield. Also noteworthy are Robyn Hitchcock’s backing band, the Nashville Crawdads, who include Peter Buck, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings and John Paul Jones.

As always, thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 20: A Land of Wolves and Thieves

To celebrate reaching twenty volumes of this series, we’ve got ten new songs to the NSD canon this time out, and a dozen new artists. Among the songs are such genuine rarities as the early gem “Troubled and I Don’t Know Why,” and “I Must Love You Too Much,” co-written in the late-seventies with Helena Springs. Also on hand are Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter’s version of the rarely covered “Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts”; one of Dylan’s earliest songs, “Song to Woody,” sung by British folk pioneer Wizz Jones; and much, much more…

A couple of notes: the beginning of “Trust Yourself” is cut off, but the song is so rarely covered that I decided to include it anyway; and there’s some brief digi-noise on “Man Gave Names to the Animals,” but this terrific version still merits inclusion.

The peculiar thing about this release is the title, “Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan.” These are NOT Dylan songs, but his covers of traditional songs. I don’t wonder much how they decided on the misleading description.

I included some art in these last ones. It may/may not have any relationship to our subject. As always if you don’t want them, just set your client to opt out.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, VOl. 37: Crying Like a Fire in the Sun

How time flies. I had this one ready to go for the tenth anniversary of the Love + Theft release (September 11) when my cable modem went kaput. By the time Comcast came out and fixed it, I had missed the date and it’s been sitting on my hard drive ever since. So, at last, here it is. Also, the tracks for Vol. 38 are already ready, so that should be along soon.

As always, a big thanks to the tapers, the original uploaders, the nice folks who’ve sent me recordings, the fine artists who’ve created cover artwork, and especially the performers and most of all the composer. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). If you’ve got something good that deserves consideration for future volumes, PM me.

Lastly, if you are interested in MP3 covers (Dylan and others), check out my blog at http://smallfiguresinavastexpanse.blogspot.com/. I’m going to try to make it a daily thing for the foreseeable future. Say hi in the comments section so I know you came by.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 38: Time To Carve Another Notch

They say downloading is killing recorded music, and I’m starting to believe them: from a peak of about 1500 downloads on a new volume of NSD, we’re now down to around 300. I guess everyone else is getting them off Pirate Bay (or Music Ruined My Life). And now with the competition from Amnesty International’s four CD Dylan cover set, I really expect to take a hit. But there is some spectacular music here, and that’s the important thing.

Happy Thanksgiving–Jeff.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan: May Your Songs Always Be Sung (Vol. 9)

Putting together this series, the biggest challenge has been finding covers of songs other than “the hits.” Perhaps you can never have too many versions of “All Along the Watchtower,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” and “Like a Rolling Stone,” but it can be even more rewarding to hear a new interpretation of a lesser known or rarely performed song, like Maria McKee’s version of “New Pony” or Tom Russell doing “Seven Curses” (both featured on NSD Vol. 6). So this time out I’ve decided to include only songs not featured on previous volumes of this project.

The highlight for me is Lou Reed’s solo rendition of “Foot of Pride.” Lou butchered this tune at Dylan’s 30th anniversary concert; here, without a band to confuse his sketchy sense of rhythm, he conquers it. I’ve never really gotten this song–“Like the lion tears the flesh off of a man/ So can a woman who passes herself off as a male” has to be the weirdest opening couplet in Dylan’s canon–but this version makes me a believer.

Thanks to all the folks who’ve sent me suggestions and files, as well as the tapers, the original uploaders, and especially the performers and composer. Pdiamond and dsgtrane have been kind enough to create great artwork for the first eight volumes, and hopefully one or both of them or someone else will do the same for this one. Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Enjoy!

02 The Man in Me – Cracker (4-29-05,Twilight Criterium Music Fest, Athens, GA)

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan
The Dylan Covers, Vol. 1
Various Artists

As Columbia Records once advertised, “Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan.” Still, I always love to hear Dylan covers. Whenever one pops up, at a show or online, I listen attentively for something new the singer might bring to the song. For the last few years, I’ve been collecting them via bit torrent with an eye toward making a compilation. Here is the first volume of what may be many, if there is interest, and if I can find the time and energy. For now, I’ve avoided the Dead, the Byrds and some other usual suspects, but they may appear later. I have sequenced this for flow; total running time is 78:00. I’ve put the two longest tracks at the end, so those of you who don’t like jams or have short attention spans can avoid them. I haven’t done any artwork, but if there are any frustrated album cover designers out there, I would love to have some.

Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages; soundboards and FMs have an asterisk, the rest are very good to excellent audience recordings. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Thanks, of course, to the tapers, and to the original uploaders. Enjoy! JS

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan
The Dylan Covers, Vol. 2
Various Artists (Audience Recordings)

As Columbia Records once advertised, “Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan.” Still, I always love to hear Dylan covers. Whenever one pops up, at a show or online, I listen attentively for something new the singer might bring to the song. For the last few years, I’ve been collecting them via bit torrent with an eye toward making a compilation. Here is the second volume of what may be many, if there is continued interest, and if I can find the time and energy.

This time out, I have taken the advice of CHerrmann57, who suggested I segregate audience from soundboard recordings on separate volumes. Quality is generally VG to Exc, though not as good as the audience recordings on the previous volume. (Next up will be a ’70s volume, which will probably be all soundboard or FM recordings.) I have again sequenced this for flow rather than any sort of chronology; total running time is about 78 minutes. I’ve again put the long tracks at the end, so those of you who don’t like jams or have short attention spans can avoid them. I haven’t done any artwork, but again humbly request that if there are any frustrated album cover designers out there, have at it; pdiamond did a nice job last time!

Due to the many different sources, I am not including lineages. I have done nothing to the original files but normalize the levels and fade in and out on each track (using Cool Edit). Thanks, of course, to the tapers, and to the original uploaders. Enjoy! JS

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan Import Label: Righteous ASIN: B0039L1J6Q VARIOUS ARTISTS (Artist)

JS starts to get a bit ‘burned’ starting in here somewhere. See below. I can’t blame him at all and I don’t have to collect the tracks and put ’em into an attractive collection and get the ball rolling and all that. I can start to understand his reluctance when I asked him if he’d want to put them back up again (mid 2018 I think).

warm up that .torrent client, ’cause here we go!

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan, Vol. 36: Down in the Easy Chair

The last one of these I did came out on Dylan’s 70th birthday. Now we have one for America’s 235th birthday. To celebrate, we have the first NSD appearance of “Let Me Die in My Footsteps,” a lovely acoustic version by the Minnesota duo Roma di Luna.

Finally, I have started an MP3 blog, which will feature tracks not in this series. Right now, you can get Jeff Tweedy’s cover of “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight,” which I believe is new to circulation; it’s a studio outtake from the “I’m Not There” soundtrack. I’ll be adding stuff daily, if there seems to be interest. (I won’t be posting MP3 versions of this series, as Music Ruined My Life is already doing a fine job of that.) Here’s the link:
