OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This show was billed as “Summer Session ’99”, and I taped up front and hung my Neumanns underneath Bonnie Harris’s Schoeps MK-41v mics. This tour was with Gov’t Mule and Phil & Friends as constants, and the bands moe., Galatic, and String Cheese Incident rotated from show to show. I remember thinking that moe was weird, but I have heard they have a core following. I was indebted at this show to Bonnie Harris for letting me hang my Neumann KM140s under her Schoeps MK41Vs, and also to my friend Allan Chen for supplying the Lunatec V2 microphone preamp which was far better than my Beyer MV100. The tapers section was on the floor up front and was totally filled by the time I got in. It’s nice to have friends!! 🙂

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was the last time that I was to see and record the Allman Brothers Band. The SB County Bowl is a small intimate venue that holds about 3,500 people. We were up front in the 8th row. Space was tight and I had to run my gear under the seat but as I remember I believe that they let us bring in microphone stands this time, as opposed to back in 1992.

Taper Notes:
I had heard that the Allman Brothers were becoming taping friendly and trying to attract some of the Dead’s taper crowd. When I got to the County Bowl that afternoon I noticed that the sign that says ‘No Cameras, Tape Recorders, Weapons, Etc’, had black electrical tape over the words ‘tape recorders’. I took that as a Good Sign! They let me in with no problem after I explained that my bag contained Only audio taping equipment; my usual spiel. I just wish that the head of security had clued in the rest of the staff! The security sure tried to hassle me as I was setting up my mics. They were clueless that the Allmans allowed taping. The Bowl wouldn’t allow mic stands so I had to hold a T-Bar with the CM-300s on it the whole night. Man, was my arm tired later! As I was setting up my mics on the T-Bar, this security guy comes over, frowns, and says, ‘What are Those?’ Ah, microphones, says I. ‘What are they FOR?’, he asks. For Recording, says I. I Almost added, ‘Is this a trick question’? It seemed obvious to me what they were for! ‘We’ll see about this!’ he says, and storms off. A little while later he comes back, about 20 feet away, looks at me and shrugs his shoulders and shakes his head as he walked away! I had a lady complain to me that they wouldn’t let her bring in a camera so why was I able to tape the show? Hey, rules are rules. I asked her if she’d ever had a flash go off in her eyes but she wasn’t listening. There were a couple of other tapers there that night but I think that I was the closest to the stage. I’ve never seen another recording of this show from another source in circulation. Anyway, this was my 1st Allman Brothers concert and I thought that they were awesome. I loved the interplay between the musicians. Warren was on fire!!! Hootchie Coochie Man sent chills down my back. He is such a bluesman! I had seen and recorded the Dead since early 1986 but I understood after the show why people say that NOBODY COOKS LIKE THE ALLMAN BROTHERS!!! Blues Traveler opened the show and I recorded them with the same Nakamichi CM-300s->Sony WMD-D6C rig. Even now, after seeing the Allmans quite a few times over the years, I have to say that the 1992 line up is still one of my favorite incarnations of the band.

Oldneumanntapr Notes-
This was a fun show. David Lindley & Wally Ingram played four songs to open the show, and it just rolled on from there. Instead of separate sets from each artist, they would all play together and swap lead vocals. The show ran about 3.5 hours! The Santa Barbara County Bowl is a very intimate place to see shows, as it’s small (3,000 capacity) and nestled in the hills of Santa Barbara. The security is really tight there, and it took three of us to bring in my recording equipment. The security staff at the bowl, from what I’ve been told, are all off-duty SB County Sheriffs deputies, and they DO have the authority to arrest people on the spot, as apposed to most venue security who will either confiscate your batteries and blanks, or kick you out of the venue if you are caught taping.

It was difficult to record, not only because of the ever-present security staff, but also because the show started durning daylight hours. I wanted to record David Lindley & Wally Ingram, as they opened the show, but it’s really hard to stealth record in broad daylight.

I had a problem at the time with my Beyer MV100 microphone preamp because of a loose XLR input jack, so I had two channel drop outs on this recording that I had to repair. I later had the jack re-soldered, which fixed the problem. While I was at it, I also went in and reduced the over enthusiastic crowd noise wherever I could. I think it made a big difference.

During one song someone seated near me was trying to get everyone to stand and I didn’t want to comply so there is a brief moment of talking from this guy that I couldn’t completely remove. ‘Don’t you want to stand up?’ NO.

I remember that one of my friend Dave’s friends, a lady that I think worked at KOTR FM in Cambria (Not Carol Jo, who talked all the way through my Miles Davis Cal Poly recording in 1990), sat next to me while Dave was up front in a closer row. She dropped my binoculars onto the concrete floor, which I could have done without, but I think they didn’t come away with any damage.

I think mine is one of the better recordings from this mini tour, with only the final show at the Gorge Amphitheater in George, Washington, that maybe a little better. That show was uploaded without any recording lineage, which is a pet peeve of mine, so I was unable to tell what gear was used to make the recording.
