Let me know how you like Mega. They have a 50 gig limit too so I may just switch back and forth between Mega, File Factory and others. I’m especially interested in the experiences of non Firefox users on Mega as I’m hearing it could be bad.

You’ll be seeing several non 1977 Dead shows in the near future. I have a friend who is a big Brent Mydland fan but doesn’t really understand how to acquire bootlegs. I told her I’d make her a Brent mix and so I grabbed a bunch of shows from his era. I’m more of a 70s head myself so its been fun listening to shows from the 80s that I normally skip. I may become a fan after all. Speaking of Brent, anybody got any especially good dates that feature him? They don’t necessarily have to be his songs just songs that he performs particularly well.

  1. Hi,
I would like Mega BUT… why it tries to make me installing Chrome which I’m not going to use anymore after the mess it created with my IE8 which I’m using?
Without Chrome I cannot use Mega. Viscious circle.

  2. I can’t say if these are great Brent shows, but they are favorites of mine from the 80s:
9/6/80 – preparing for the Reckoning/Dead Set shows in 10-11/80, The Dead spend 3 1/2 hours on stage, including a unique HHTheFool/Sage&Spirit sort of guitar intro to PITB. A lovely show from start to finish.
    10/19/81 – 2nd set is stunning. stunning.
The Berkeley 5/82 shows are great.
7/28/82 is one of many great summer 82 shows.
    4/23/83 is super-strong.
3/31/84 has a unique section in the Scarlet-to-Fire jam and either Mickey brought all his toys down from Marin or there is a 3rd percussionist on that show.
6/30/85 is another super-night and features a Gimme Some Lovin pre-Drums that has rampaging Brent action.
’86 is crippled by Jerry’s troubles, but that same factor allowed Brent to grab a good deal more of the spotlight. Some nights his organ is the dominant lead instrument.
    9/2/88 is superb.
10/26/89 is amazing! Another of the Best Brent Dark Star shows (w/ 10/9/89, 12/31/89, 3/28/90, and 7/12/90).
and there are a couple hundred othjer great ones….

  3. The Mega thing is a little weird, but to get a SB Grateful Dead show (for free!) I guess I can put up with weird. Mega would not let me use Safari at all, Fire Fox it wanted me to download an extension which I was not real comfortable with, but Chrome does work as long as Java is enabled for the site. The show did download very quickly which was nice, especially for a free site. I guess what I am trying to say is that I really, really appreciate you sharing these wonderful GD shows, and I can put up with just about any restriction to obtain them.

  4. I second what Seth Hollander said about the Berkeley May 1982 run. One of the best! All three shows are FINE!

Long Beach 8-28-1981 is Amazing. The transition between the Wheel and Brents Good Times is FAT. This was the first Good Times ever played.

MSG 3-09-1981 is pretty smokin. It has some great interplay between jerry and Brent in China > Rider, overall a well played show

But i’m still a big fan of late 1973 into 1974, and of course 1976 1977.

  5. People, the firefox extension is just fine and just as fast and much healthier for your pc than having Chrome installed

  6. Mega works great. Don’t forget to include some Mr. Fantasy/Hey Jude in your best of Brent. Thanks for the tunes!

  7. Trying to get that 4/20/84 show. In both Safari and FireFox Mega claimed I needed to update my Flashplayer. And they recommended that extension for FireFox. One Flashplayer download, install, and computer restart later, the same thing!
But I grabbed that extension for FireFox. Tried the D/L again: no problem with my Flashplayer now!
I am not comfortable with this extension business (most “free” services on the internet exist to gather marketing data or for some other hidden purpose. Why IS it so important to Mega that I get their software piece into my system? Danger, Will Robinson!

In other news, I was able to free/slow D/L in Safari from File Factory yesterday! The count-down page is functioning again in Safari!

And Mr. TUBE also uses Freakshare as a D/L site. I find the access there pretty smooth.

Regarding the music-sharing that all this tech facilitates, THANKS for the 4-20 action! You’re awesome!

  8. The reasons for limited browser compatibility are related to limitations in the various browser capabilities, remember MEGA is only currently BETA and has been designed for th e new advanced HTML5 file management . Most current browsers use much older architecture. The Firefox extension is certified and IS safe, Chrome however is the browser incarnation of the Google ethos. This is the reason why you do not want it on your pc

    see below for more details

Freakshare gives you approx 2 downloads a day as free user,
most requests to update flash players relate to malware/adware on your system

ps if you are having trouble finding your downloads in firefox mega, they are on your desktop!! – don’t ask me!!

  9. Mega does not work on Safari. It works fine (and very fast!) on Firefox once you download the extension.
Thanks for persevering with your Grateful Plan despite the difficulties! I must say 1984 is not my favourite year (I would say it more or less marks the beginning of the band’s final decline), but these shows are above average and very welcome. Still looking forward to some posts from the GD’s golden improvisational era, 1972-74!
Mydland: I think his playing really shines on the monster Scarlet – Fire from 1979.11.01 Nassau Coliseum (hidden track on CD2 of Dick’s Picks Vol. 13).

  10. I have a few more shows already uploaded to mega but after that I’m done with it. I don’t want everyone to have to download special software to get all the shows.

Thanks for the Brent recommendations. Keep them up.

  11. How about the infamous 9/6/80 with a rare 80s Playin’ > UJB sandwich? Bummer that people are having trouble with Mega, I really like it.

  12. OK, so the people who can get Mega seem to really like it but everyone else is getting hassled. Is that about right? I really hate making people download special extensions or browsers just for my site, but I hate all the crap you have to go through on other sites as well.

Hmmmm, what to do what to do.

  13. Yeah I also think you should persevere. I mean Filefactory and Hotfile are the best hosters for free downloaders (by a country mile) but there is already a lot of competition for people’s precious daily allowances from other blogs.
Seems to me the only people having issues are those who haven’t bothered to read the notes. Haven’t seen anybody reporting issues with firefox/mega at all. With mega I can get the stuff quickly and with no waiting between d/ls, and once you know it’s gonna dump it on your desktop the issue is gone.
At the end of the day if you don’t like firefox particularly or you have some (unfounded) fears about the extension then just use iit exclusively for mega downloading. like it or not there are going to be a lot more people uploading to MEGA in the future so, if you are not a Chrome user then having something on your pc to collect ’em seems to make sense anyway!

  14. First, I am sure that all of us here are grateful for the time and thought you are putting into this – for our sake.
I would say, go with whatever is most convenient for you. Folks who are interested will find ways. The Firefox extension needed for Mega seems inoffensive at the first try. Again, thank you.

  15. You guys have just about convinced me to stick with Mega. The two biggest problems I see is that they too have a 50 gig limit for free uploaders which means I’d have to keep creating new accounts until they found me out. And since you have to have Chrome or a FF extension I’m going to have to deal with some pretty constant complaining.

My regular readers will figure it out, but I get a pretty much daily stream of new readers and they won’t know what to do with Mega and they will complain. Which means I’ll have to explain it, even if I put something in the sidebar.

At the moment I’m thinking I’ll just go back and forth between Mega, File Factory and maybe one or two others. When I reach my limit on one I’ll switch to the other and continue on until I come full circle. Then I’ll either create a new account or if the files have disappeared I’ll just put more stuff in.

Good thoughts one and all, and please do continue the discussion. I may take a poll soon of my regulars to see if Mega is ok.

  16. I don’t mind you sticking with Mega. I can use FireFox to get the files and the D/L speed is pretty fast.
Early Brent synth greatness: 10/27/79 Cape Cod, Dancing In The Streets/Franklin’s Tower!
